Impact of bridge-to-bridge strategies from paracorporeal to implantable left ventricular assist devices on the pre-heart transplant outcome: A single-center analysis of 134 cases.
CONCLUSIONS: The BTB strategy is useful in providing long-term survival in patients with acute critical diseases. However, the early mortality rate after conversion is higher in patients who underwent the BTB strategy. PMID: 33243529 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

079 Assessing Arterial Pulsatility in Patients With Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Support
An increasing number of end-stage heart failure patients are supported by continuous-flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices (cfLVADs) as a bridge to heart transplantation. In these patients, accurate assessment of arterial pulsatility remains a challenge because of diminished pulse pressure, which itself can be associated with adverse events such as gastrointestinal bleeding and stroke. Our study investigates the value of simultaneous arterial pressure and arterial flow velocity assessment in cfLVAD patients.

229 Long Term Risk of Stroke in Patients with New Post-Operative Atrial Fibrillation After Liver Transplantation
New-onset postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is common in patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT). To date, studies have not evaluated whether POAF in LT recipients increases the risk of cerebrovascular events (CVE).

Creatinine increase following initiation of antihypertensives is associated with cardiovascular risk: a nationwide cohort study
Conclusion: In primary care, patients initiating first-line antihypertensive treatment, an increase in plasma creatinine above 30% was associated with increased absolute 6-month risk of cardiovascular event.

Use of institutional criteria for transcatheter device closure of Fontan fenestration & #8211; Midterm outcomes
Conclusions: Using institutional criteria, transcatheter device closure of Fontan fenestration was followed by significant increase in oxygen saturations and no statistically significant difference in morbidity or mortality between closure and nonclosure groups.

Hemodynamic effects of ivabradine use in combination with intravenous inotropic therapy in advanced heart failure
AbstractIntravenous inotropic therapy can be used in patients with advanced heart failure, as palliative therapy or as a bridge to cardiac transplantation or mechanical circulatory support, as well as in cardiogenic shock. Their use is limited to increasing cardiac output in low cardiac output states and reducing ventricular filling pressures to alleviate patient symptoms and improve functional class. Many advanced heart failure patients have sinus tachycardia as a compensatory mechanism to maintain cardiac output. However, excessive sinus tachycardia caused by intravenous inotropes can increase myocardial oxygen consumpti...

Outcomes of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Cardiac Transplant Patients: A Binational Analysis Derived From the United Kingdom and United States.
CONCLUSIONS: PCI in cardiac transplant recipients was associated with similar short-term mortality and vascular complications compared with PCI in the general populace. However, a higher 1-year morality was observed in the BCIS cohort. PMID: 32865507 [PubMed - in process]

The hospitalizations in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: “the dark side of the moon”.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a myocardial disease characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy not solely explainable by abnormal loading condition [1,2]. Patients with HCM show a different clinical course, ranging from an asymptomatic status, with no adverse events and normal or extended longevity, to a symptomatic condition in which several disease complications can occur [3]. Among HCM patients which experience disease progression, 3 different pathways have been identified: refractory heart failure (HF), requiring surgical myectomy/alcohol ablation (obstructive HCM, OHCM) or heart transplant (non-obstructive HC...

Spectrum of transthyretin gene mutations and clinical characteristics of Polish patients with cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis.
CONCLUSIONS: According to available research, this is the first time types of TTR mutations and clinical characteristics of Polish patients with cardiac hereditary ATTR have been reported. Previous literature data about Polish background in families with p.Phe53Leu mutation and the present results, suggest that this TTR mutation might be endemic in the Polish population. Computed tomography perfusion in patients of stroke with left ventricular assist device
AbstractLeft ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are widely applied for patients with severe heart failure as a bridge to heart transplantation as well as destination therapy. Patients with implanted LVAD have an increased risk of cerebral thrombosis and computed tomographic perfusion (CTP) has the potential to be performed for early diagnosis and treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), including interventional thrombectomy. Here, we report our series of CTP examination in patients having suspected AIS after LVAD implantation. We retrospectively investigated 33 contrast-enhanced CTPs from January 2017 to December 2018 whic...

Medical Marijuana, Recreational Cannabis, and Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.
c Cardiovascular Sciences; Council on Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing; Council on Epidemiology and Prevention; Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health; and Council on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Abstract Cannabis, or marijuana, has potential therapeutic and medicinal properties related to multiple compounds, particularly Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol. Over the past 25 years, attitudes toward cannabis have evolved rapidly, with expanding legalization of medical and recreational use at the state level in the United States and recreational use nationally in Canada and Uruguay. As a res...

The role of long-term mechanical circulatory support in patients with advanced heart failure.
Abstract In patients with end-stage heart failure, advanced therapies such as heart transplantation and long-term mechanical circulatory support (MCS) with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) have to be considered. LVADs can be implanted as a bridge to transplantation or as an alternative to heart transplantation: destination therapy. In the Netherlands, long-term LVAD therapy is gaining importance as a result of increased prevalence of heart failure together with a low number of heart transplantations due to shortage of donor hearts. As a result, the difference between bridge to transplantation and desti...
