Using Dental Pulp Stem Cells for Stroke Therapy
Conclusion and Future Perspectives Stem cell-based therapy is a promising alternative for stroke treatment. While stem cells from different sources, including induced PSC, ESC, MSC, and NSC, have been investigated, using NSC and enhancing the natural mechanisms is most appropriate for brain repair. In preclinical models of stroke, stem cell transplantation has led to positive outcomes through a variety of cellular and molecular mechanisms, many being mediated by the array of beneficial factors produced by the cells. Recent advances in cellular reprogramming have provided alternative sources of NSC to be investigated, allo...

Stroke-Related Hospitalization and Mortality After a Kidney Allograft: A Population-Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Fatal and nonfatal stroke-related events are common among kidney allograft recipients. Further research is warranted to allow better risk stratification and facilitate clinical trials for risk attenuation of stroke after a kidney transplant. Human neural stem cells improve early stage stroke outcome in delayed tissue plasminogen activator-treated aged stroke brains.
CONCLUSIONS: Aged stroke mice that received delayed tPA treatment in combination with hNSC transplantation exhibited reduced stroke pathophysiology in comparison to non-transplanted stroke mice with delayed tPA. This suggests that hNSC transplantation may synergize with already existing stroke therapies to benefit a larger stroke patient population. PMID: 32147438 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke after implantation of continuous flow left ventricular assist devices
ConclusionThe occurrence of stroke significantly increases morbidity and mortality after LVAD implantation. Despite an adverse impact on survival and quality of life, several patients who suffered stroke still received a heart transplant. Furthermore, none of our patients had recurrence of a neurological event. Strict implementation of anticoagulation protocols is likely the mainstay of preventing this devastating complication.

A review of the complex landscape of stroke in left ventricular assist device trials.
CONCLUSIONS: Based on this review, we propose that future clinical trials: 1) utilize standardized stroke definitions and define stroke subtypes, 2) ensure that neurologists are integrated in study design and event adjudication, 3) include more thorough evaluations of stroke etiology using multimodality techniques, and 4) adopt the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale to define stroke severity. National Trends, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of Acute In-hospital Stroke After Lung Transplantation in the United States: Analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing Registry
Chest. 2023 Apr 11:S0012-3692(23)00503-2. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2023.04.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Lung transplantation is the definitive treatment for end-stage lung failure. However, there have been no large, long-term studies on the impact of acute in-hospital stroke in this population.RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the trends, risk factors, and outcomes of acute stroke in patients undergoing lung transplantation in the United States?STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We identified adult first-time, isolated lung transplant (LTx) recipients from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database, which comprehe...

Medtronic touts stroke data for HeartWare LVAD
A retrospective analysis of two studies involved the HeartWare left-ventricular assist device Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) acquired in 2016 showed that managing blood pressure reduced the severity of strokes in patients implanted with the HVAD pump. The analysis, of “destination therapy” patients who are not candidates for a heart transplant, took data from the Endurance and Endurance Supplemental studies. Results were presented this week at the annual meeting of the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation in London, Medtronic said. The 465-patient Endurance Supplemental study compared 308 patients i...

Characteristics of stroke after liver and kidney transplantation
ConclusionsIn-hospital, perioperative, and hemorrhagic strokes were more common in the LT group than in the KT group. Ischemic stroke subtypes did not differ significantly between the two groups and undetermined etiology was the most common cause of ischemic stroke in both groups. High mortality after stroke was noted in transplantation patients and was associated with in-hospital stroke.

Enhanced recovery from chronic ischemic injury by bone marrow cells in a rat model of ischemic stroke.
This study provides valuable insights into the effect of BMC transplantation in the chronic ischemic brain, which lead to the development of effective therapy for chronic stroke patients who currently lack satisfactory therapeutic options. PMID: 24152766 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

IJERPH, Vol. 16, Pages 326: The Risk of Stroke in Kidney Transplant Recipients with End-Stage Kidney Disease
Ju Wu Chia-Hung Kao Background: The incidence of stroke after kidney transplantation is poorly understood. Our study aimed to determine the incidence and predictors of stroke as well as mortality from stroke in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Methods: This retrospective cohort study used the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan to study KTRs (N = 4635), patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD; N = 69,297), and patients from the general population who were chronic kidney disease (CKD)-free and matched by comorbidities (N = 69,297) for the years 2000 through 2010. The risk of stroke was analyz...

Gut Microbiota-Derived Short-Chain Fatty Acids Promote Post-Stroke Recovery in Aged Mice.
Conclusions:This is the first study suggesting that the poor stroke recovery in aged mice can be reversed via "post-stroke bacteriotherapy" following the replenishment of youthful gut microbiome via modulation of immunologic, microbial and metabolomic profiles in the host. Acute Kidney Injury as a Risk Factor for Cerebrovascular Disease Outcome among Patients Presenting with Stroke in King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Saudi J Kidney Dis Transpl. 2021 Jan-Feb;32(1):60-68. doi: 10.4103/1319-2442.318549.ABSTRACTPatients suffering from stroke may develop different complications including acute kidney injury (AKI). AKI affects mortality among the stroke patients. The association between stroke and AKI despite extensive research has been not completely understood. The study aimed to determine an AKI as an independent poor risk factor of cerebrovascular disease outcome among the stroke patients. Our objectives were to estimate AKI incidence among stroke patients at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between 2013 a...
