Thromboembolic stroke in patients with a HeartMate-II left ventricular assist device – the role of anticoagulation
Conclusion: In our experience anticoagulation within predefined targets is not associated with a reduced thromboembolic stroke risk in patients with a HeartMate-II LVAD on antiplatelet therapy. However, no firm statement about the effect of either anticoagulant or antiaggregant therapy can be made based on our study. A larger randomized study is needed to support the hypothesis that there may be no additional benefit of coumarin or heparin therapy compared with antiplatelet therapy alone.

Exogenous Neural Stem Cells Transplantation as a Potential Therapy for Photothrombotic Ischemia Stroke in Kunming Mice Model
In this study, we explore the transplantation of exogenous neural stem cells (NSCs) as the potential therapy for the photothrombotic ischemia stroke in a Kunming mice model. After stroke, mice receiving NSC transplantation demonstrated a better recovery of brain function during the neurobehavioral tests. Histology analysis of the brain samples from NSC transplanted mice demonstrated a reduction of brain damage caused by stroke. ISHLT 2017: Medtronic HVAD trial misses primary endpoint, reports lowered stroke rates
Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today that results from the Endurance supplemental trial of its HVAD heart pump system did not meet its primary endpoint, but did report  lowered stroke rates compared to standard treatment. Stem cell transplantation for ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, in participants with ischemic stroke, stem cell transplantation was associated with a reduced neurological impairment, but not with a better functional outcome. No obvious safety concerns were raised. However, these conclusions came mostly from small RCTs with high risk of bias, and the certainty of the evidence ranged from low to very low. Excess Stroke Deaths in Kidney Transplant Recipients: A Retrospective Population-based Cohort Study Using Data Linkage
Conclusions. Kidney transplant recipients had excess stroke deaths, particularly at younger ages and women. Preexisting cerebrovascular disease was a potentially modifiable risk factor for stroke death, suggesting further studies of secondary stroke prevention for kidney transplant recipients.

Abstract 271: Anti-coagulation and Ischemic Stroke Risk in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and Atrial Fibrillation: Insights from the Kaiser Permanente Colorado Atrial Fibrillation Registry Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusion: 1 in 3 patients with atrial fibrillation have CKD. There were similar reductions in the risk of stroke associated with warfarin use for CKD and non-CKD patients. These findings reinforce current clinical practice guidelines, which recommend warfarin use based on thromboembolic risk without consideration for CKD status.
