Structurofunctional resting-state networks correlate with motor function in chronic stroke
Conclusion The results demonstrate that changes after a stroke in both intrinsic and network-based structurofunctional correlations at rest are correlated with motor function, underscoring the importance of residual structural connectivity in cortical networks.

Podcast: Cerebrolysin for acute ischaemic stroke
When someone has an acute ischemic stroke, urgent and reliable treatments will reduce their risks of disability or dying from their brain tissue damage. The treatments used vary around the world, and a drug called cerebrolysin is widely used in post-Soviet countries, Eastern Europe, Central and Southeast Asia. In April 2017, the latest update of this review was published by researchers from Kazan Federal University in Russia and Chinara Razzakova, a PhD student from the university interviewed one of the authors, Liliya Eugenevna, for this podcast." This Cochrane Review is about a medicine called cerebrolysin, which is used...

Association Between Carotid Artery Perivascular Fat Density and Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source
ConclusionWe found increased density in the fat surrounding carotid artery ipsilateral to stroke compared with contralateral in ESUS, suggesting the presence of an inflammatory reaction that extends beyond the vessel lumen in patients with ESUS with a risk factor profile similar to LAA strokes.

Stroke prevention and therapy awareness in a large sample of high school students: results of an educational campaign in the Northern-Western Italy
Discussion and conclusionWe demonstrated that our educational campaign obtained an important improvement of stroke awareness in our sample. Girl students, Lyceum students, and less young students attained significant better knowledge improvement. We hope that the enhanced awareness might induce a more frequent diffusion of prevention strategies, an increased capacity of recognizing onset stroke symptoms with shortening of patients ’ presentation in the emergency room of the hospitals when they can undergo reperfusion treatments.

The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 can predict the institutionalization of the patients with stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: WHODAS 2.0 scores, urbanization level, and severity of impairment were positive factors for the institutionalization of patients with stroke in long-term care facilities, whereas the female sex and an age of ≥85 years were negative factors. The cognition and mobility domains and standardized WHODAS 2.0 scores were more accurate for predicting the institutionalization of patients with stroke. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: Proper analysis of the functioning status and risk factors, as well as prediction of discharge destination for the patients with stroke can help the healthcare system reduce unnecessa...

The Influence of β-Adrenergic Receptor Kinase-1 on Stroke-induced Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: β-Adrenergic receptor kinase-1 has a significant quantifiable influence on lymphocyte proportion at 48 hours and on the classification of sustained stroke-induced immunodeficiency. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: β-Adrenergic stimulation influences immunodeficiency in AIS. PMID: 29601376 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Community-Based Stroke Recognition Education and Response: An Evidence-Based Intervention Project.
CONCLUSIONS: FAST was simple to teach and engaging for participants. Using the FAST curriculum in senior center populations increased the participants' awareness of stroke signs and symptoms, and their willingness to activate the 911 emergency system. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Educational interventions in the community with older adults can produce increased awareness of stroke symptoms and willingness to respond when necessary. Impact of atrial high-rate episodes on the risk of future stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Embolic stroke events are common in Japanese patients with CIEDs. AF events lasting ≥30s and an enlarged left atrium are the risk factors of embolic stroke in this population. PMID: 30728105 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between inflammatory cytokines and the risk of post-stroke depression, and the effect of depression on outcomes of patients with ischemic stroke in a 2-year prospective study.
In conclusion, depression is prevalent in patients following ischemic stroke. IL-6 is positively associated with the risk of PSD, and may predict its development in patients following ischemic stroke. PSD correlates with outcomes of patients, and the effective management of PSD may improve the prognosis of patients. PMID: 27588080 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Early Palliative Care Consultation Decreases Length of Stay in Severe Stroke Patients (P1.211)
Conclusions:Early PCC in severe stroke patients decreased hospital LOS by 3 days. This may be due to prompt clarification of goals of care and hastened discharge to hospice. Advanced age, poor pre-stroke functional status, and severe post-stroke deficits and disability warrant early PCC. In addition to decreasing LOS, further study is needed to determine whether early PCC also limits futile tests, procedures, and iatrogenic complications. Ultimately, timely identification of PCC candidates may produce higher satisfaction and decreased hospital costs.Disclosure: Dr. Schloss has nothing to disclose. Dr. Tversky has nothing t...
