NYU Tandon team devises a smarter way for stroke patients to rehabilitate
(NYU Tandon School of Engineering) A team of students from the NYU Tandon School of Engineering is using smartphones to improve the process patients must typically undergo to relearn the basic skills they lose after suffering a stroke. The centerpieces are wearable mechatronic devices that are connected inexpensively by a smartphone. When a patient performs an exercise assigned by a physician or physical therapist, microcontrollers quantify the action and display the information via smartphone to the patient and medical providers.

O-007 Recanalization and Outcome Comparisons in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients Treated with Mechanical Thrombectomy Selected by CT/MR Perfusion Imaging Versus CT Angiography
ConclusionsMechanical thrombectomy patients selected by CTA or perfusion imaging demonstrated no difference in successful recanalization rate, but higher level of recanalization/reperfusion and a trend of improved outcomes with CTA selection that may be attributed to improved treatment times.DisclosuresA. Setting up an undergraduate neurology teaching day: 7 steps
The University of Bristol medicine course has one of the shortest neurology placements nationally, just one week. This is despite stroke being the 2nd most common cause of death and neurological illness accounting for 20% of acute medical admissions. Neurology training is set to be reduced even further by GMC regulations limiting clinical placements to the first four years with the final year as a "student assistantship". In response to this we setup an independent, neurology teaching day held annually for 90 students. This is currently in its 2nd year, oversubscribed and free to attend. The overarching aim was to eradicat...

Exertional Heat Stroke within Secondary School Athletics
Exertional heat stroke (EHS) remains one of the leading causes of sudden death in sport despite clear evidence showing 100% survivability with the proper standards of care in place and utilized. Of particular concern are student athletes competing at the secondary school level, where the extent of appropriate health care services remains suboptimal compared with organized athletics at the collegiate level and higher. While rapid recognition and rapid treatment of EHS ensures survival, the adoption and implementation of these lifesaving steps within secondary school athletics warrant further discussion within the sports med...

Simple and choice reaction times of healthy adults and patients after stroke during simulated driving
We examined whether driving-related reaction times differ between 26 healthy adults (university students) and 26 patients after stroke, and how distractors and leg-dominance affect reaction time and correctness of reactions of healthy adults. Reaction times were measured with the Fiat Mediatester driving simulator using 18-lamps reaction test (simple reaction time measurement) and choice reaction test (scored as reaction time and number of correct reactions). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in simple reaction time. As expected, choice reaction times of the healthy adults were shorter on...

“Sequential multimodality stimulation” for post-stroke-hemineglect: Feasibility and outcome in a pilot randomized controlled trial
ConclusionMultimodality stimulation, in addition to standard physiotherapy, is feasible and potentially results in better neurocognitive and functional recovery following right hemispheric ischemic strokes. However, larger studies are warranted to prove these preliminary observations beyond doubt.

Multilevel allometric modelling of maximal stroke volume and peak oxygen uptake in 11 –13-year-olds
ConclusionsFat-free mass explained sex differences in SVmax, but with FFM controlled for, there was still a  ~ 5% sex difference in peak\( {\dot{\text{V}}\text{O}}_{2} \). SVmax made a modest additional contribution to explain the development of peak\( {\dot{\text{V}}\text{O}}_{2} , \) but there remained an unresolved sex difference of  ~ 4%.
