Clinical perspective in relation to age in patients treated with thrombectomy for anterior circulation stroke in a stroke center in Colombia
CONCLUSIONS: Age younger than 80 is a significant predictor for results and long-term outcomes in patients suffering from stroke, and in patients older than 80 years old a Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction score 2b-3 is a predictor of good outcomes. Further studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between intrahospital complications and long-term outcomes.PMID:36751025 | DOI:10.1177/15910199231153195

Relationship between clinical and instrumental balance assessments in chronic post-stroke hemiparesis subjects
Background: Stroke is often associated with balance deficits that increase the risk of falls and may lead to severe mobility disfunctions or death. The purpose of this study is to establish the relation between the outcome of instrumented posturography and of the most commonly used clinical balance tests, and investigate their role for obtaining reliable feedback on stroke patients' balance impairment. Methods: Romberg test was performed on 20 subjects, 10 hemiplegic post-stroke subjects (SS, 69.4 +/- 8.2 years old) and 10 control subjects (CS, 61.6 +/- 8.6 years old), with 1 Bertec force plate. The following parameters we...

Outcomes of endovascular mechanical thrombectomy and intravenous tissue plasminogen activator for the treatment of vertebrobasilar stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients requiring IV-tPA and/or mechanical thrombectomy for the treatment of posterior-circulation strokes suffer from high mortality rates. Increased age is associated with significantly higher mortality rates among posterior-circulation stroke patients who require mechanical thrombectomy. PMID: 24465258 [PubMed]

Interprofessional learning on a stroke unit
This article outlines the development of a practice‐based interprofessional learning initiative on a stroke unit. The World Health Organization has advocated that future health care professionals should be ‘collaborative practice ready’ MethodsA half‐day seminar was developed by King's College London in conjunction with an interprofessional clinical team from the Stroke Unit at St Thomas' Hospital. Students were assigned discipline‐specific supervisors who allocated them to care for a patient within the confines of their usual professional role. They were asked to present the patient to a mixed‐discipline grou...

Textbook of Stroke Medicine
A successful medical textbook is one that contains well-researched and current material that is clearly written, supported by helpful diagrams and tables, and also concise and manageable. It should be comprehended within a finite period of time that, for the physician, is filled with activity in an academic or medical environment. I am writing this review from the viewpoint of a stroke neurologist who is involved in teaching medical students, residents, midlevel health care professionals, and patients and their families. I find Textbook of Stroke Medicine by Brainin and Heiss to be an exceptional book that meets and someti...

A more symmetrical gait after split-belt treadmill walking increases the effort in paretic plantar flexors in people post-stroke.
CONCLUSION: A more symmetrical gait increases paretic plantar flexor efforts. Individuals post-stroke presenting high plantar flexor efforts when walking have limited muscle capacity to increase non-paretic step after split-belt walking. PMID: 27345026 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Failed Deglutitive Upper Esophageal Sphincter Relaxation Is a Risk Factor for Aspiration in Stroke Patients with Oropharyngeal Dysphagia.
Conclusions: Manometric measurements of the pharynx and UES were well correlated with abnormal findings in the VFSS and a shorter relaxation time interval of the UES during deglutition is an important parameter for the development of aspiration. PMID: 27510474 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract 161: Lean Process Improvements Reduce Door to CT and Door to Needle Times for Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: Lean process improvement methodology significantly reduces door to CT and door to needle times, supporting current AHA Target: Stroke goals and allowing faster treatment of patients with acute ischemic stroke. Incorporating time-outs into standardized processes that aim to deliver care more quickly may improve patient safety without substantially slowing down DTN times. Further investigation is required to determine whether the new process improved safety and clinical outcomes.

The emerging partnership between palliative care and stroke
Stroke care displays 2 truisms. First, a severe stroke is a common event often close to one's death. It unleashes a series of intense conversations among clinicians, patients, and families, rife with uncertainty, about health states with varying degrees of acceptability and what makes life worth living.1 Second, enormous variations in clinical practice remain prevalent, including end-of-life care practices. This end-of-life practice variation has been called a hidden curriculum, providing medical students with insights into how the location of their residency training helps shape the type of physicians they will become.2 I...

P-008 Normoglycemia following thrombectomy is associated with improved 90-day favorable outcomes in ischemic stroke patients
Conclusions Normoglycemia is an important marker following thrombectomy. If patients have normoglycemia following thrombectomy and recanculization, they are likely to have a favorable long-term course. Hyperglycemia following thrombectomy however is an indication of poor future outcome. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the validity of normoglycemia as a marker for long-term favorable outcome following thrombectomy. Disclosures B. Lucke-Wold: None. S. Boo: None. J. New Cochrane health evidence challenges belief that omega 3 supplements reduce risk of heart disease, stroke or death
New evidence published today shows there is little or no effect of omega 3 supplements on our risk of experiencing heart disease, stroke or death.Omega 3 is a type of fat. Small amounts of omega 3 fats are essential for good health, and they can be found in the food that we eat. The main types of omega 3 fatty acids are; alpha linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).  ALA is normally found in fats from plant foods, such as nuts and seeds (walnuts and rapeseed are rich sources). EPA and DHA, collectively called long chain omega 3 fats, are naturally found in fatty fish, such as s...

Usefulness of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio as a predictor of functional outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke after thrombolysis therapy
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2021 Jun 29;34(6):664-667. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2021.1938471. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTIn stroke patients, a high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been associated with poor functional outcome at 3 months, higher mortality, and a higher hemorrhagic transformation. We assessed the role of NLR in patients with acute ischemic stroke who received thrombolysis. The charts of 98 patients treated between 2015 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The mean NLR was compared using an independent Student's t test. At 3 months, a good functional outcome was seen in 31 patients (32%) and a poor func...
