Usefulness of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio as a predictor of functional outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke after thrombolysis therapy
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2021 Jun 29;34(6):664-667. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2021.1938471. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTIn stroke patients, a high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been associated with poor functional outcome at 3 months, higher mortality, and a higher hemorrhagic transformation. We assessed the role of NLR in patients with acute ischemic stroke who received thrombolysis. The charts of 98 patients treated between 2015 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The mean NLR was compared using an independent Student's t test. At 3 months, a good functional outcome was seen in 31 patients (32%) and a poor func...

Correlation of von Willebrand factor and platelets with acute ischemic stroke etiology and revascularization outcome: an immunohistochemical study
Conclusions The vWF level and CD42b/vWF distribution pattern in emboli were correlated with AIS etiology and revascularization outcome. Platelet content was associated with response to thrombolysis.

Group-based circuit training to improve mobility after stroke: a cross-sectional survey of German and Austrian physical therapists in outpatient settings
CONCLUSION: German and Austrian PTs do not yet use GCT in outpatient physical therapy for stroke. Almost half of PTs, however, employ task-oriented training as recommended across guidelines. A detailed, theory-driven and country-specific evaluation of barriers to GCT uptake is necessary to inform implementation.PMID:37424481 | DOI:10.3233/NRE-230010

Quality of life and functional outcome in early school-aged children after neonatal stroke: A prospective cohort study.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) is recognized internationally as an efficient tool for evaluating health interventions. To our knowledge, QoL has not been specifically assessed in children after neonatal arterial ischemic stroke (AIS). AIM: To study the QoL of early school-aged children who suffered from neonatal AIS, and QoL correlation to functional outcome. METHOD: We conducted a multicenter prospective cohort study as part of a larger study in full-term newborns with symptomatic AIS. Participating families were sent anonymous QoL questionnaires (QUALIN). Functional outcome was measured usi...

The impact of constraint induced movement therapy on brain activation in chronic stroke patients with upper extremity paralysis: An fMRI study
This study is designed to explore the impact of constraint‐induced movement therapy (CIMT) on brain activation in chronic stroke patients with upper extremity paralysis and seek valuable predictors of recovery. Six chronic stroke patients with right hand dysfunction and nine healthy control subjects participated in the study. The patient's hand function was assessed by the Action Research Arm Test and statistical significance was determined by a paired Student's t‐tests. We conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging and analyzed the data using Analysis of Functional Neuroimages software. After CIMT, function of th...

How Does Geographic Access Affect In-Hospital Mortality for Veterans With Acute Ischemic Stroke?
Objective: To examine the relationship between estimated travel time to admitting hospital and mortality for veterans with acute ischemic stroke, controlling for patient demographic, clinical, facility-level variables, as well as select in-hospital treatments and procedures. Methods: A longitudinal observational population-based study. Information on all veterans discharged from a Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) with an ischemic stroke diagnosis between October 1, 2006 and September 30, 2008 were examined. A total of 10,430 patients met the inclusion criteria for the study. Unadjusted differences between pati...

Novel TIA biomarkers identified by mass spectrometry‐based proteomics
ConclusionsUtilizing mass spectrometry‐based proteomics, platelet basic protein has been identified as a candidate serum biomarker for transient ischemic attack. This unbiased proteomic approach may be a promising method to identify novel biomarkers to more precisely diagnose transient ischemic attacks.

Research Opportunities in the Area of Adults With Stroke.
Authors: Abstract The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Evidence-Based Practice Project has developed a table summarizing the research opportunities on adults with stroke. The table provides an overview of the state of current available evidence on interventions within the scope of occupational therapy practice and is based on the systematic reviews from the AOTA Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines Series. Researchers, students, and clinicians can use this information in developing innovative research to answer important questions within the occupational therapy field.
