308 Association of Diabetes and Frailty with Mortality in Middle-Aged and Older Europeans
ConclusionFrailty and pre-frailty are independent risk factors for mortality in diabetics. The identification of frailty is important for the risk-stratification and management of middle aged and older patients with diabetes and should be included in the routine assessment of these high-risk individuals.

Orthostatic hypotension and health-related quality of life among community-living older people in Korea
ConclusionsThe level of HRQoL of older people with OH was significantly lower than that of older people without. The presence of OH was an independent determinant of HRQoL in older adults after adjusting for covariates. This finding suggests that strategies for relieving OH could improve HRQoL in affected older adults.

Models of poststroke depression and assessments of core depressive symptoms in rodents: How to choose?
Abstract Our previous studies have indicated that depression and declined cognition have been involved in some neurodegenerative diseases including Stroke, Parkinson's diseases and Vascular Parkinsonism. Post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most common psychiatric disorder following a stroke and has high morbidity and mortality. Studies on PSD are increasingly common, but the specific mechanisms remain unknown. Current research mainly includes clinical and animal aspects. Questionnaires and peripheral blood examination are two of the most common methods used to study clinical PSD. The results of questionnaires are ...

Modifiable risk factors, cardiovascular disease, and mortality in 155 722 individuals from 21 high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries (PURE): a prospective cohort study
We describe the prevalence, hazard ratios (HRs), and population-attributable fractions (PAFs) for cardiovascular disease and mortality associated with a cluster of behavioural factors (ie, tobacco use, alcohol, diet, physical activity, and sodium intake), metabolic factors (ie, lipids, blood pressure, diabetes, obesity), socioeconomic and psychosocial factors (ie, education, symptoms of depression), grip strength, and household and ambient pollution. Associations between risk factors and the outcomes were established using multivariable Cox frailty models and using PAFs for the entire cohort, and also by countries grouped ...

Depressive symptoms and cardiovascular diseases in the adult Polish population. Results of the NATPOL2011 study.
CONCLUSIONS: Depressive symptoms were more prevalent in women compared to men, and they were significantly and inde-pendently associated with age and primary education level in both sexes, and with a history of stroke in women. PMID: 30406941 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

CHA2DS2-VASc Stroke Risk Index and Executive Functioning in Older Adults.
CONCLUSION: Significant relations between stroke risk classification and performance on several measures of executive functioning provide support for a wider and more generalized use of CHA2DS2-VASc with healthy older adults. These findings further highlight the importance of early identification and treatment of stroke risk factors associated with cognitive decline. Findings suggest that CHA2DS2-VASc is a practical and useful tool for patients and their providers in the early detection of stroke risk and development of individualized treatment plans. New factors that affect quality of life in patients with aphasia
Conclusion: Aphasia severity, mood disorders and functional limitations may have a negative effect on QoL in patients with aphasia. Also, for the first time, we show that fatigue has an important impact on QoL in this population. Specific management of this symptom might be beneficial and should be explored in future studies.

Determinants of cognitive performance and decline in 20 diverse ethno-regional groups: A COSMIC collaboration cohort study
This study investigated associations between risk factors and late-life cognitive decline on a global scale, including comparisons between ethno-regional groups. Methods and findingsWe harmonized longitudinal data from 20 population-based cohorts from 15 countries over 5 continents, including 48,522 individuals (58.4% women) aged 54 –105 (mean = 72.7) years and without dementia at baseline. Studies had 2–15 years of follow-up. The risk factors investigated were age, sex, education, alcohol consumption, anxiety, apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (APOE*4) status, atrial fibrillation, blood pressure and pulse pressure, body mas...

Carotid artery plaque detected on ultrasound is associated with impaired cognitive state in the elderly: A population-based study in Wakiso district, Uganda
This study set out to determine the prevalence of abnormal carotid ultrasound findings and their association with cognitive function among the adults ≥60 years in Wakiso district, Uganda in 2018. A total of 210 participants were included. Carotid artery stenosis, presence of plaque, stenosis and intima-media thickness were assessed by ultrasound. Cognitive status was assessed using a Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) test. The prevalence of plaque was 21.4%. Variables which included; presence of plaque, age, education, gender, marital status, whether participant stayed alone or with someone else, care for self, occupation ...

Effect of a novel designed intensive patient care program on cognitive impairment, anxiety, depression as well as relapse free survival in acute ischemic stroke patients: a randomized controlled study.
Conclusions: IPCP presents with a positive influence on improving cognitive impairment and decreasing anxiety as well as depression, while a less effect on improving RFS in AIS patients. Abbreviation: IPCP: intensive patient care program; RFS: relapse free survival; AIS: acute ischemic stroke; MRA: magnetic resonance angiography; ITT: intention-to-treat; LOCF: last observation carried forward. Predictive value of inflammatory indicators for post-stroke depression in patients with ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Elevated NLR and PLR at admission and levels of IL-17 and IL-6 at 2 weeks after admission are all independent predictors of the occurrence of PSD at 3 months after stroke. PMID: 31270044 [PubMed - in process]

Predictors of return to work after stroke: a prospective, observational cohort study with 6  months follow-up.
Conclusions: Less than 50% of stroke survivors returned to work six months after stroke. Among predictors, only the level of dependence in daily activities is a modifiable factor. Interventions aimed at reducing disability after stroke might increase rates of return to work. Implications for rehabilitation In Brazil, less than 50% of stroke survivors returned to work six months after stroke. Clinicians may collect information regarding household income, type of work and dependence in daily activities to estimate chances of returning to work, in developing countries. Being independent at 3 months was the strongest predictor...

Identification and Management of Ischemic Stroke in the Postanesthesia Care Unit
This report details the case of a 63-year-old male experiencing a stroke in the immediate postoperative period after total knee arthroplasty. Risk for perioperative stroke is influenced by age, sex, ethnicity, comorbidities, and some medications. The depressed neurocognitive state of patients recovering from anesthesia warrants special consideration for the identification and management of perioperative stroke.
