Supporting people with aphasia to 'settle into a new way to be': speech and language therapists' views on providing psychosocial support.
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: All participants cared about the emotional well-being of their clients; however, they identified a number of barriers to people with aphasia receiving appropriate psychological support. A cultural shift, whereby psychological care for people with aphasia is seen as valuable, feasible and necessary, delivered collaboratively by SLTs, MHPs and the wider team, may improve services. The stroke caregiving trajectory in relation to caregiver depressive symptoms, burden, and intervention outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: This study contributes to the understanding of the relationship between length of caregiving and depression, burden, and intervention outcomes. Clinicians should recognize that the stroke caregiving trajectory can be nonlinear. Routine and repeated clinical assessment of caregiver well-being is needed, along with implementation of interventions when necessary, regardless of how much time has passed since the stroke. Predictors of quality of life for chronic stroke survivors in relation to cultural differences: a literature review
ConclusionsMost predictors of QoL in stroke survivors were the same in China and the Western countries. However, their QoL might be predicted differently regarding to the individualistic and collectivistic cultural differences.

Rates and correlates of suicidal ideation among stroke survivors: a meta-analysis
Conclusion Despite some limitations, this meta-analysis shows that about one out of eight stroke survivors has suicidal ideation. Thus, there is enough evidence to support the use of routine screening and early interventions to prevent and treat suicidal ideation after stroke, especially among subjects carrying specific correlates.

Longitudinal Study of Hypertensive Subjects With Type 2 Diabetes MellitusNovelty and Significance Epidemiology/Population
Despite adequate glycemic and blood pressure control, treated type 2 diabetic hypertensive subjects have a significantly elevated overall/cardiovascular risk. We studied 244 816 normotensive and 99 720 hypertensive subjects (including 7480 type 2 diabetics) attending medical checkups between 1992 and 2011. We sought to identify significant differences in overall/cardiovascular risk between hypertension with and without diabetes mellitus. Mean follow-up was 12.7 years; 14 050 all-cause deaths were reported. From normotensive to hypertensive populations, a significant progression in overall/cardiovascular mortality was...

Return to work predictors of stroke survivors and their spousal caregivers.
CONCLUSIONS: Further research is needed regarding the return to work needs of stroke survivors and their spousal caregivers, particularly what role the occupational therapist may play in facilitating that process. PMID: 28506018 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

MCI subtypes are heterogeneous and preceded by different risk factors: A study on aMCI and naMCI incidence (P4.194)
Conclusions:Results suggested that aMCI and naMCI are inherently heterogeneous from the outset, illustrated by their different risk factors. Recognizing indicators of MCI prior to clinical presentation is critical in targeted interventions, early treatment, and prevention from rapid progression to dementia.Study Supported by:NIA grant: AG03949Sylvia and Leonard Marx FoundationDisclosure: Dr. Zammit has nothing to disclose. HELIAD study: Dementia prevalence in Greece (P3.095)
Conclusions:The prevalence of dementia and its subtypes in Greece is similar or at the lower range of that reported in many other European countries and globally. In our sample, increased age and decreased level of education status, but not gender, were predictive of a diagnosis of dementia with age being the strongest predictive factor.Study Supported by:Funding/Support: IIRG-09-133014 from the Alzheimer’s Association; 189 10276/8/9/2011 from the ESPA-EU program Excellence Grant (ARISTEIA) which is co-funded by the European Social Fund and Greek National resources; and Y2β/o.51657/14.4.2009 from the Ministry fo...

Self-perceived psychological stress and risk of all-cause mortality after stroke: the Mashhad Stroke Incidence Study (MSIS) (P4.306)
Conclusions:High self-perceived pre-stroke stress was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality after stroke. Further prospective studies are required to evaluate the role of psychological stress as a predictor of stroke outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Saber has nothing to disclose. Predictive Variables of Cognitive Dysfunction in Patients with Lupus (P1.340)
Conclusions:Duration of disease and low educational level are predictors of CD in patients with SLE. Depression and anxiety did not influence cognitive performance. Although cardiovascular comorbidity is a risk factor for dementia in general population, those variables might play a minor role in SLE patients.Study Supported by:Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) and São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) (grant #2015/08833-7) supported this study.Disclosure: Dr. Alessi has nothing to disclose. A Brief Dementia Screening Test in South Africa: Results from the Health and Aging Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH community (HAALSI) (P4.191)
Conclusions:There is a potentially protective and long-lasting impact of secondary school education on cognitive status later in life in this setting. Using a brief screening test in this relatively poor cohort of older South Africans, patterns of low cognition are similar to those in the USA and other countries.Study Supported by:The National Institute on Aging at the National Institute of Health (NIH) (1P01AG041710-01A1; 1R01AG051144–01; 3U54HG006938-03S1). Educational and behavioural interventions for anticoagulant therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: This review demonstrates that there is insufficient evidence to draw definitive conclusions regarding the impact of educational or behavioural interventions on TTR in AF patients receiving OAT. Thus, more trials are needed to examine the impact of interventions on anticoagulation control in AF patients and the mechanisms by which they are successful. It is also important to explore the psychological implications for patients suffering from this long-term chronic condition. PMID: 28378924 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
