Multimodal Optical Diagnostics of the Microhaemodynamics in Upper and Lower Limbs
Conclusion The use of optical non-invasive diagnostic methods has a great potential for the detection of concomitant microcirculation disorders in patients with rheumatic diseases and diabetes. In this review, it was shown that the use of laser Doppler flowmetry, optical tissue oximetry and fluorescence spectroscopy together or separately may have important diagnostic value for the detection of violations, assessment of their severity, as well as for the analysis of the effectiveness of the therapy. The joint application of the considered technologies with the methods of machine learning (discriminant analysis) can be use...

The Effects of Intelectin-1 on Antioxidant and Angiogenesis in HUVECs Exposed to Oxygen Glucose Deprivation
Conclusion: These results suggest intelectin-1 promotes angiogenesis, inhibits oxidative stress and reduces apoptosis by stimulating the Akt-eNOS signaling pathway in response to ischemia in vitro. Introduction Stroke is a main reason of human neurological disability, ischemic stroke (IS) accounts for almost 80–90% of all strokes. IS occurs after a cerebral blood flow disruption, leading to cellular death and tissue damage by restricting glucose and oxygen supplies (1). Ischemic vascular diseases cause substantial vascular valve and vascular endothelial cell injuries, eventually damaging the surrounding tis...

Corticospinal Tract Integrity and Long-Term Hand Function Prognosis in Patients With Stroke
Conclusions: The present study showed that CST integrity (at 6 months after onset) in patients with chronic stroke was related to functional hand status. In addition, the mid-pons FA value was more predictive of functional restoration of the hand than the FN or FA value at the pontomedullary junction. These results may be useful in predicting the functional restoration of the hand and understanding the functional prognosis of stroke. Introduction Restoration of hand function is one of the most important goals for patients with stroke (1). Thus, techniques that aid in predicting restoration of hand function are also i...

An Evaluation of Personal Cooling Systems for Reducing Thermal Strain Whilst Working in Chemical/Biological Protective Clothing
Conclusion: The IV, PCM, and SLIV produced lower heart rate, mean skin, rectal and mean body temperatures in addition to improved work times compared to control. The WS did not improve work times possibly as a result of the cooling capacity of the suit abating, and magnifying thermal insulation. Considering the added time and resources required to implement combination cooling in the form of ice slurry and ice vest (SLIV), there was no significant additive effect for perception, cardiovascular strain, rectal temperature and total trial time relative to the phase change vest or ice vest alone. This may be a product of a &#x...

Change in Prescribing for  Secondary Prevention of Stroke and Coronary Heart Disease in Finnish Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities
ConclusionsThe decline in cardiovascular medication use in residents with CHD and dementia suggests Finnish physicians are adopting a more conservative approach to the management of cardiovascular disease in the NH population.

Lower Incidence of Late Tamponade After Cardiac Surgery by Extended Chest Tube Drainage.
CONCLUSIONS: Longer mediastinal chest tube drainage after cardiac surgery is associated with a significantly lower incidence of late cardiac tamponade. PMID: 30835565 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prehospital and hospital delays for stroke patients treated with thrombolysis: A retrospective study from mixed rural –urban area in Northern Finland
Thrombolysis improves stroke outcome, but efficacy of the treatment is limited by time. Therefore, recognition of stroke symptoms by dispatch centres and by emergency medical services (EMS) is crucial, as is minimization of pre-hospital delays. We investigated the pre-hospital delays in patients with stroke treated with thrombolysis and compared the delays between rural and urban patients.

Poor Quality of Warfarin Treatment Increases the Risk of All Types of Intracranial Hemorrhage in Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: Poor control of warfarin treatment was associated with elevated risk of ICH. Approximately half of the ICH were traumatic, mainly subdural. PMID: 30686804 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Regional differences in the incidence of diabetic cardiovascular events reflect the quality of care.
CONCLUSIONS: We found major and stable differences in the incidence of ACS and IS between the UHDs among patients with diabetes. The differences result from several factors influencing the risk of these complications, including the treatment. These differences tended to be larger than the corresponding differences in the total population, which suggests that there is potential to prevent CVCs by improving diabetes care. Use of Antihypertensive Medication after Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults and its Association with Long-term Outcome.
CONCLUSIONS: Use of antihypertensives was suboptimal in one third of patients in whom antihypertensives were initially prescribed. Users were at lower risk of mortality and recurrent stroke or TIA compared to non-users. PMID: 30592437 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Moyamoya angiopathy: long-term follow-up study in a Finnish population
ConclusionsFinnish MMA patients have a benign and stable course with a ~3.5  % annual stroke risk. We found no differences in the clinical outcomes between the operated and conservative groups, however, the psychosocial well-being requires more attention in MMA patients.

The Evolution of Sleep Apnea Six Months After Acute Ischemic Stroke and Thrombolysis
Conclusions:Sleep apnea prevalence remained high in patients who had an ischemic stroke at 6 months post-stroke. The risk for developing sleep apnea after stroke was significantly lower among patients undergoing thrombolysis.Clinical Trial Registration:Registry: ClinicalTrials.gov; Title: Ischaemic Stroke and Sleep Apnea in Northern Part of Finland; Identifier: NCT01861275; URL:https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01861275Citation:Huhtakangas JK, Saaresranta T, Bloigu R, Huhtakangas J. Nurse-staffing level and quality of acute care services: Evidence from cross-national panel data analysis in OECD countries
ConclusionA higher proportion of nurses-staffing level is associated with better performance of acute care services in OECD countries. Also, the nursing characteristics of Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Netherlands, Finland, Switzerland, Australia and United States would be good patterns for other countries to maximize nursing outcomes in the care of patients with acute and life-threatening conditions by reducing the risk of complication, mortality and adverse clinical outcomes.

Thrombolysis and evolution of sleep apnea in ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Sleep apnea is present in the vast majority of newly diagnosed ischemic stroke patients and the prevalence remained high after six months follow-up. Remarkable declining in ESS, ODI4 and hypopneas per hour was observed in the thrombolysis group. Thrombolysis seems to be an independent protective factor for developing sleep apnea post-stroke.

Dose-dependent effect of smoking on risk of coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke in individuals with type 1 diabetes
Conclusions/interpretationThere is a dose-dependent association between smoking and cardiovascular disease in individuals with type 1 diabetes. In men in particular, the risk of incident stroke remains high even after smoking cessation and is increased in current and former smokers independently of other risk factors.
