Patent foramen ovale closure reduces recurrent stroke risk in cryptogenic stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
CONCLUSION: PFO device closure in appropriately selected patients with moderate to severe right-to-left shunt and/or atrial septal aneurysm shows benefit with respect to recurrent strokes, particularly in younger patients. Patent Foramen Ovale and Ischemic Stroke in Patients With Pulmonary Embolism: A Prospective Cohort Study.
Conclusion: Frequency of recent ischemic stroke in patients with symptomatic PE was higher in patients with PFO than in those without PFO. This review synthesizes the data and provides a framework for optimal management of stroke patients with PFO. Updates in the Management of Cryptogenic Stroke and Patent Foramen Ovale
Conclusions: Stroke management is based on evaluation of individual patient-risk factors. Evaluation and treatment is ideally directed by a vascular neurologist to ensure optimal secondary prevention, especially in cases where an underlying etiology is not identified on initial workup.

Aspirin or anticoagulation after cryptogenic stroke with patent foramen ovale: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
ConclusionOur meta-analysis shows that anticoagulation confers no net benefit in recurrent stroke prevention over antiplatelets in patients with PFO-related stroke. RoPE score might help in selecting patients benefiting from anticoagulation, but further trials are needed to delineate risk/benefit profile of anticoagulation.

Surgical vs. drug therapy in patients with patent foramen ovale and cryptogenic stroke.
CONCLUSION: Compared with drug therapy, PFO closure reduced the risk of recurrent stroke among patients with a risk score of ≥2 and reduced the incidence of serious bleeding without increasing the risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. Long-term risk of recurrent cerebrovascular events after patent foramen ovale closure: Results from a real-world stroke cohort
CONCLUSION: In this long-term follow-up-study of patients with a cerebral ischaemic event who had received PFO-closure with different devices, rates of recurrent stroke/TIA were low and largely related to large artery atherosclerosis and small vessel disease.
