Prevalence of the Diagnoses of Alzheimer's Dementia, Non-Alzheimer's Dementia and Vascular Dementia Among Hospitalized Stroke Patients: A National Inpatient Sample Analysis, 1999-2012 (P1.125)
Conclusions: The odds for AD increased over the years for stroke patients, compared to VaD.Disclosure: Dr. Sherzai has nothing to disclose. Dr. Sherzai has nothing to disclose. Dr. Pilot has nothing to disclose. Dr. Ovbiagele has nothing to disclose.

Cerebral small vessel disease, medial temporal lobe atrophy and cognitive status in patients with ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack
ConclusionIn patients with ischaemic cerebrovascular disease, SVD features are associated with MTA, which is a common finding in stroke survivors. SVD and AD type neurodegeneration coexist, but the AD marker MTA, rather than SVD markers, is associated with post‐stroke cognitive impairment.

Positive effects of intermittent fasting in ischemic stroke.
Abstract Intermittent fasting (IF) is a dietary protocol where energy restriction is induced by alternate periods of ad libitum feeding and fasting. Prophylactic intermittent fasting has been shown to extend lifespan and attenuate the progress and severity of age-related diseases such as cardiovascular (e.g. stroke and myocardial infarction), neurodegenerative (e.g. Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease) and cancerous diseases in animal models. Stroke is the second leading cause of death, and lifestyle risk factors such as obesity and physical inactivity have been associated with elevated risks of stroke in ...

Population-based stroke and dementia incidence trends: Age and sex variations.
This study explores these trends within demographic subgroups. METHODS: We analyzed administrative data sources using validated algorithms to calculate stroke and dementia incidence rates from 2002 to 2013. RESULTS: For more than 12 years, stroke incidence remained unchanged among those aged 20 to 49 years and decreased for those aged 50 to 64, 65 to 79, and 80+ years by 22.7%, 36.9%, and 37.9%, respectively. Dementia incidence increased by 17.3% and 23.5% in those aged 20 to 49 and 50 to 64 years, respectively, and remained unchanged in those aged 65 to 79 years and decreased by 15.4% in those aged 80+ years. ...

Cerebrovascular disease affects brain structural integrity long before clinically overt strokes
In the current issue of Neurology®, Werden et al.1 examined a group of patients experiencing first-ever or recurrent stroke to understand the relationships between stroke and cortical structural integrity. They performed 3T magnetic resonance scanning within 6 weeks of the most recent stroke and found that stroke patients had smaller hippocampal volumes and greater white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume compared to controls. Because of the short time lag from stroke to scan, the authors do not believe that the index stroke itself caused the shrinkage in the hippocampus; rather, they believe that the stroke and the st...

The convergence of stroke and dementia
ABSTRACT Neurological disorders account for the most Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY's) -of the Global Burden of Disease (10%). More than half of neurological DALY's result from the combination of stroke (42%) and dementia (10%). The two pose risk for each other and share the same predisposing factors. A stroke doubles the risk of dementia. The close interactions call for convergent approaches. Stroke and dementia also converge at the microscopic level. The neurovascular unit has emerged as a key organizational structure of the brain. Involvement of any of its elements affects all the others. Thus, neurodegeneration i...

Novel miRNA PC-5P-12969 in Ischemic Stroke
AbstractCirculating microRNAs (miRNAs) have been used effectively as peripheral biomarkers and mechanistic targets for human diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer ’s, and cancer. The purpose of our study is to determine noninvasive, blood-based early detectable biomarkers for ischemic stroke (IS). Based on our previous global miRNA sequencing study, four miRNAs were previously unreported (novel) in IS condition. Among these, miRNA PC-5P-12969 was exclusivel y expressed in the IS condition; otherwise, it was not expressed in normal condition, and therefore, we focused on miRNA PC-5P-12969 for further studies. In the present ...

High Prevalence of Social Cognition Disorders and Mild Cognitive Impairment Long Term After Stroke
Conclusions: The study demonstrates the high frequency of social cognition impairment 3 years after the first-ever stroke in young patients. Doctors and nurses should be sensitized to cognitive handicap after stroke because of difficulties for rehabilitation and returning to work.

The 100 most-cited articles about the role of neurovascular unit in stroke 2001-2020: A bibliometric analysis
CONCLUSION: There has been growing attention and efforts made in the field of stroke and NVU. The merit of the above findings may help to shape the research policy in ischemic stroke both at the country and institutional level.PMID:33764687 | DOI:10.1111/cns.13636
