Hyper-eosinophilic syndrome: An uncommon cause of chronic abdominal pain in an elderly male.
We report an elderly male with a history of bronchial asthma, obstructive sleep apnoea and food allergy who presented with chronic abdominal pain and weight loss. Abdominal examination and routine evaluation were essentially normal other than a peripheral hyper-eosinophilia. We witnessed a brisk and lasting response to an elimination diet and corticosteroids. An Unexpected Infection in Loss-of-Function Mutations in STAT3: Malignant Alveolar Echinococcosis in Liver
Iran J Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2020 Dec 19;19(6):667-675. doi: 10.18502/ijaai.v19i6.4936.ABSTRACTLoss-of-function (LOF) mutations in signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) gene causes autosomal dominant hyper immunoglobulin E syndrome (AD-HIES or Job's Syndrome), a rare and complex primary immunodeficiency (PID) syndrome characterized by increased levels of IgE (>2000 IU/mL), eosinophilia, recurrent staphylococcal skin abscesses, eczema, recurrent pneumonia, skeletal and connective tissue abnormalities. Although bacterial and fungal infections are common in AD-HIES, susceptibility to parasitic infect...

Predictive Value of Serum Interleukins in Children with Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome
This study was performed to identify alteration of different serum interleukins (ILs) in children with INS, and their predictive value in response to steroid treatment. Three groups of children (27; steroid-sensitive INS, 21; steroid-resistant INS, and 19 healthy controls) with normal serum C3, negative serologic tests of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immune deficiency virus (HIV), and parasitic infections were included in this study. Serum concentrations of IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-13, and IL-18 were measured, using quantitative colorimetric sandwich ELISA kits. Children with secondary nephro...

The COVID-19 Virus Is Mutating. What Does That Mean for Vaccines?
As we enter the second year of living with the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the virus is celebrating its invasion of the world’s population with yet more mutated forms that help it to spread more easily from person to person. One, first detected in the U.K. in December, has already raised alarms about whether the COVID-19 virus is now escaping from the protection that vaccines just being rolled out now might provide. The variant has also been found in the U.S. Already, U.K. officials have tightened lockdowns in England, Scotland and Wales, and over the holidays, more than 40 countries banned travelers from the region ...

Eosinophilic colitis in children: a new and elusive enemy?
ConclusionThis study focus attention on EC as a new challenging pathology. Multicentric randomized clinical trials are needed to understand physiopathological mechanisms to validate a possible endoscopic score and related histological threshold, and to standardize therapy according to clinical features and instrumental findings. The high prevalence of EC in ASD need further specific research.

The Two Faces of Nematode Infection: Virulence and Immunomodulatory Molecules From Nematode Parasites of Mammals, Insects and Plants
Helminths stage a powerful infection that allows the parasite to damage host tissue through migration and feeding while simultaneously evading the host immune system. This feat is accomplished in part through the release of a diverse set of molecules that contribute to pathogenicity and immune suppression. Many of these molecules have been characterized in terms of their ability to influence the infectious capabilities of helminths across the tree of life. These include nematodes that infect insects, known as entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) and plants with applications in agriculture and medicine. In this review we will f...

Characterization of Hypereosinophilia in University Health Care Systems
Hypereosinophilia (HE), defined as peripheral blood eosinophilia ≥1500 cells/μL, is an uncommon finding in clinical practice that may be discovered incidentally or with associated symptoms. HE warrants further investigation as it can portend life-threatening diseases such as malignancy or the eosinophil-associated end-organ damage of hypereosinophilic syndrome s (HES).1 The differential for HE is broad and includes malignancies and secondary causes such as adverse medication reactions, parasitic infections, and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA).
