Infections and the risk of incident giant cell arteritis: a population-based, case-control study
Conclusions Antecedent infections and, to a lesser extent, herpes zoster infections are modestly associated with incident GCA. These data provide population-level support for the hypothesis that long-standing alterations of the immune system are associated with susceptibility to GCA and suggest that herpes zoster is unlikely to play a major causal role in the pathogenesis of GCA.

NIH scientists advance understanding of herpesvirus infection
(NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections last a lifetime. Once a person has been infected, the virus can remain dormant (latent) for years before periodically reactivating to cause recurrent disease. This poorly understood cycle has frustrated scientists for years. Now, National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists have identified a set of protein complexes that are recruited to viral genes and stimulate both initial infection and reactivation from latency. Environmental stresses known to regulate these proteins also induce reactivation.

Identification of novel 5,6-dimethoxyindan-1-one derivatives as antiviral agents.
CONCLUSION: Our research identified a novel 5,6-dimethoxyindan-1-one analog (compound 7), as a potent antiviral agent for vaccinia virus, and heterocyclic chalcone analog (compound 9) as a broad spectrum antiviral agent. PMID: 28359234 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Differential Diagnosis of Chronic Urticaria and Angioedema Based on Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, and Proteomics.
Abstract Differential diagnosis of urticaria and angioedema has been based on the phenotype as either acute or chronic depending on the duration of more than 6 to 8 weeks, respectively. Additional subdivisions include poorly defined terms such as idiopathic, spontaneous, or autoimmune. In this article, the author suggests that an increased understanding of the acquired and innate immune system and data from novel proteomic technology have blurred the lines between these categories of diagnosis. Specific molecular pathways and response to specific medications should be incorporated in classification and diagnosis ...

Encephalitis: parenchymal leucocytes in infectious, immune and unknown cause
Conclusions Our study describes potentially important differences in the relative leucocyte populations in the parenchyma of patients with encephalitis, which may have diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Further studies are planned to distinguish invading macrophage/monocytes from resident microglia in a transgenic murine model.

The effect of a conditional cash transfer on HIV incidence in young women in rural South Africa (HPTN 068): a phase 3, randomised controlled trial
This study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01233531). Findings Between March 5, 2011, and Dec 17, 2012, we recruited 10 134 young women and enrolled 2537 and their parents or guardians to receive a cash transfer programme (n=1225) or not (control group; n=1223). At baseline, the median age of girls was 15 years (IQR 14–17) and 672 (27%) had reported to have ever had sex. 107 incident HIV infections were recorded during the study: 59 cases in 3048 person-years in the intervention group and 48 cases in 2830 person-years in the control group. HIV incidence was not significantly different between those who received...

Mucosal diseases from an allergological perspective.
Authors: Schwarz I, Bokanovic D, Aberer W Abstract The oral allergy syndrome is one of the most common form of food allergy and manifests as contact urticaria of the oral mucosa after consumption of cross reacting foods. Whereas allergic contact stomatitis often occurs due to dental materials, allergic contact cheilitis is usually a reaction due to topical therapeutics like herpes ointments or lip care products. As late type reactions are more frequent than immediate type reactions in the anogenital mucosa, contact dermatitis in this area should be identified via epicutaneous testing. In case of contact urticaria ...

Erythema Multiforme Associated With Misoprostol: A Case Report
A 33-year-old healthy woman at 6 weeks of gestation without any underlying disease developed erythema multiforme (EM) after misoprostol. She had no history of herpes simplex virus infection and drug allergy to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotic agents. Medical abortion was performed at 6 weeks' gestation. Later day, the patient developed oral lesions as several white bullae lesions in her buccal mucosa and hyperkeratotic lip plaques with mild pain. Then, lesions resolved within approximately 3 weeks. Microscopic finding of oral biopsy from beneath the tongue and lesions was performed. The result was consis...

Defective natural killer cell activity in a mouse model of eczema herpeticum
Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) are susceptible to several viruses, including herpes simplex virus (HSV). Some patients experience 1 or more episodes of a severe skin infection caused by HSV termed eczema herpeticum (EH). There are numerous mouse models of AD, but no established model exists for EH.
