Benign skin neoplasms in children
Hautarzt. 2022 Jan 14. doi: 10.1007/s00105-021-04935-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere are many different types of skin neoplasms in children and most are benign. Dermatologists should be able to differentiate between the various types of benign skin neoplasms and be able to recommend optimal treatment to concerned patients. Surgical removal of benign skin neoplasms is often the only treatment option. The aim of this paper is to provide a general overview of epidermal lesions (e.g., inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus [ILVEN], nevus sebaceous), tumors of the epidermal appendages (e.g. pilomatrixoma), cutaneo...

Immunohistochemical analysis of a  hypoxia-associated signature in melanomas with positive and negative sentinel lymph nodes : Hypoxia-associated signature of primary cutaneous melanomas
Hautarzt. 2022 Jan 7. doi: 10.1007/s00105-021-04934-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMetabolic reprogramming mediated by hypoxia-inducible factors and its downstream targets plays a crucial role in many human malignancies. Excessive proliferation of tumor cells under hypoxic conditions leads to metabolic reprogramming and altered gene expression enabling tumors to adapt to their hypoxic environment. Here we analyzed the metabolic signatures of primary cutaneous melanomas with positive and negative sentinel node status in order to evaluate potential differences in their metabolic signature. We found a positive correlation o...

Current therapeutic options in Mycosis fungoides and S ézary syndrome
This article provides a comprehensive overview of current treatment options in mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome, based on the recently published, revised German S2k guidelines on cutaneous lymphomas (update 2021). In addition, we present promising, yet-to-be-approved therapies that at least in part can be already used off-label in clinical practice today.PMID:34988613 | DOI:10.1007/s00105-021-04924-z (Source: Der Hautarzt: Zeitschrift fur Dermatologie, Venerologie, und verwandte Gebiete)

Metastatic squamous cell carcinoma on an ulcer in graft-versus-host disease after allogeneic stem cell transplantation
We report the case of a 48-year-old multimorbid man who received allogeneic bone marrow transplantation 26 years ago for chronic myeloid leukemia. For 24 years, the patient suffered from sclerodermiform chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) of the skin and lung with partial lung resection and immunosuppressive therapy. Recurrent ulcerations developed on the lower legs at the sites affected by cutaneous GVHD. The patient presented to our clinic with an ulcer progressive in size with resistance to previous therapy. Histologically, squamous cell carcinoma was found. Magnetic resonance imaging showed bone involvement and cu...

Pitfalls in dermatohistology : Stumbling blocks and problems in routine dermatopathology
Hautarzt. 2021 Dec 22. doi: 10.1007/s00105-021-04927-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExcisions and biopsies are firmly anchored in everyday dermatology. The biopsy, excision or diagnostic-therapeutic confirmation of the clinical diagnosis of neoplasms or inflammatory diseases is decisive for the dermatopathological diagnosis of tissue samples. Dermatopathology, however, is not a magic box into which a tissue sample can be placed without comment or information and receive-within 24 h at the latest-a complete, high-quality diagnosis. The present article describes problems, hurdles, and challenges in everyday dermatopatholog...

Inappropriate systemic therapy in severe atopic dermatitis-severe long-term damage
Hautarzt. 2021 Dec 14. doi: 10.1007/s00105-021-04922-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe therapeutic options for treatment of severe cases of atopic dermatitis have been limited until recently, but fundamentally improved with the approval of the first biological dupilumab at the end of 2017. With the biological tralokinumab and the Janus kinase inhibitors baricitinib and upadacitinib, further new systemic drugs have recently been approved. Nevertheless, there are cases in which modern treatment options are not taken into account, as shown by a 28-year-old patient with serious side effects from long-term treatment with sys...

Erythrodermic psoriasis after COVID-19
We present a clinical case of a patient with acutely exacerbated erythrodermic psoriasis vulgaris after symptomatic infection with SARS-CoV‑2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). Various factors are already known that can lead to an exacerbation of psoriasis, such as drugs or infections with, for example, streptococcus. An association between psoriasis and an infection with SARS-CoV‑2 has been described so far in individual case reports, in which, however, drug treatment with for example hydroxychloroquine, a known trigger of psoriasis, often took place. Later cases of exacerbation of psoriasis, partly as...

We report a patient with pronounced local swelling after a bite by a western hognose snake. Local antiseptic therapy and systemic antibiotics are recommended for infection prophylaxis; in addition, laboratory tests should be run to exclude systemic involvement.
