Isopropanol-promoted DNA extraction by polydopamine functionalized magnetic particles based on metal coordination
Talanta. 2024 Apr 17;275:126115. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2024.126115. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHigh-quality DNA is an important guarantee to start downstream experiments in many biological and medical research areas. Magnetic particle-based DNA extraction methods from blood mainly depend on electrostatic adsorption in a low-pH environment. However, the strong acidic environment can influence the DNA stability. Herein, a polydopamine-functionalized magnetic particle (PDA@Fe3O4)-based protocol was developed for DNA extraction from whole blood samples. In the protocol, Mg2+ and Ca2+ were utilized to bridge the adsorption ...

Host ‐Guest Interaction Mediated Interfacial Co‐Assembly of Cyclodextrin and Bottlebrush Surfactants for Precisely Tunable Photonic Supraballs
Precisely tunable photonic supraballs are achieved through the host-guest interaction betweenα-cyclodextrin and bottlebrush block copolymer at oil-water interfaces during organized spontaneous emulsification (OSE) process. The increased asymmetry of BBCP molecules, resulting from the complexation ofα-CD and PEG within BBCPs, induces increased spherical curvature of internal droplets, leading to a distinct blueshift of structural color. AbstractInvestigations of host-guest interactions at water-oil (w/o) interfaces are limited in single emulsion systems producing simple self-assembled objects with limited uses. Here, with...

Swift Covalent Gelation Coupled with Robust Wet Adhesive Powder: A Novel Approach for Acute Massive Hemorrhage Control in Dynamic and High ‐Pressure Wound Environments
This study presents a self-gelling powder comprising Na2HPO4 as the “H+ sucker ” withε-PLL and 4-arm-PEG-NHS as the hydrogel skeleton. Na2HPO4/ε-PLL/PEG demonstrates ultrafast self-gelation and robust wet adhesion. Applied to the dynamic and high-pressure wounds, the powder rapidly absorbs interfacial blood and undergoes an ultrafast powder-hydrogel transition that creates robust physical sealing while aggregating blood cells to accelerate coagulation. AbstractThe quest for efficient hemostatic agents in emergency medicine is critical, particularly for managing massive hemorrhages in dynamic and high-pressure wound e...

Engineering pH-sensitive dissolution of lipid-polymer nanoparticles by Eudragit integration impacts plasmid DNA (pDNA) transfection
In this study, biocompatible Eudragit constructs E100 and RS100 were formulated as lipid-polymer nanoparticles loaded with pDNA expressing red fluorescent protein (RFP) as a model therapeutic. Using a facile nanoprecipitation technique, a core-shell structure stabilised by lipid-polyethylene glycol (PEG) surfactant was produced and displayed resistance to ultracentrifugation. Both cationic polymers E100 (pH-sensitive dissolution at 5) and RS100 (pH-insensitive dissolution) produced 150-200 nm sized particles with a small positive surface charge (+3-5 mV) and high pDNA encapsulation efficiencies (EE) of 75-90 %. The dissolu...

Cutaneous adverse reactions associated with COVID-19 vaccines: Current evidence and potential immune mechanisms
Clin Immunol. 2024 Apr 18:110220. doi: 10.1016/j.clim.2024.110220. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs the number of vaccinated individuals has increased, there have been increasing reports of cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions. The main COVID-19 vaccines administered include messenger ribonucleic acid vaccines, non-replicating viral vector vaccines, inactivated whole-virus vaccines, and protein-based vaccines. These vaccines contain active components such as polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, aluminum, tromethamine, and disodium edetate dihydrate. Recent advances in understanding the coordination of inflammatory response...

Unusually large microporous HKUST-1 via polyethylene glycol-templated synthesis: enhanced CO < sub > 2 < /sub > uptake with high selectivity over CH < sub > 4 < /sub > and N < sub > 2 < /sub >
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 17. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33263-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPorous solids with highly microporous structures for effective carbon dioxide uptake and separation from mixed gases are highly desirable. Here we present the use of polyethylene glycol (20,000 g/mol) as a soft template for the simple and rapid synthesis of a highly microporous Cu-BTC (denoted as HKUST-1). The polyethylene glycol-templated HKUST-1 obtained at room temperature in 10 min exhibited a very high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 1904 m2/g, pore volume of 0.87 cm3/g, and average micropore size of 0....

Metagenomic investigations into the microbial consortia, degradation pathways, and enzyme systems involved in the biodegradation of plastics in a tropical lentic pond sediment
AbstractThe exploitation of exciting features of plastics for diverse applications has resulted in significant plastic waste generation, which negatively impacts environmental compartments, metabolic processes, and the well-being of aquatic ecosystems biota. A shotgun metagenomic approach was deployed to investigate the microbial consortia, degradation pathways, and enzyme systems involved in the degradation of plastics in a tropical lentic pond sediment (APS). Functional annotation of the APS proteome (ORFs) using the PlasticDB database revealed annotation of 1015 proteins of enzymes such as depolymerase, esterase, lipase...
