Cutaneous adverse reactions associated with COVID-19 vaccines: Current evidence and potential immune mechanisms
Clin Immunol. 2024 Apr 18:110220. doi: 10.1016/j.clim.2024.110220. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs the number of vaccinated individuals has increased, there have been increasing reports of cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions. The main COVID-19 vaccines administered include messenger ribonucleic acid vaccines, non-replicating viral vector vaccines, inactivated whole-virus vaccines, and protein-based vaccines. These vaccines contain active components such as polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, aluminum, tromethamine, and disodium edetate dihydrate. Recent advances in understanding the coordination of inflammatory response...

Unusually large microporous HKUST-1 via polyethylene glycol-templated synthesis: enhanced CO < sub > 2 < /sub > uptake with high selectivity over CH < sub > 4 < /sub > and N < sub > 2 < /sub >
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 17. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33263-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPorous solids with highly microporous structures for effective carbon dioxide uptake and separation from mixed gases are highly desirable. Here we present the use of polyethylene glycol (20,000 g/mol) as a soft template for the simple and rapid synthesis of a highly microporous Cu-BTC (denoted as HKUST-1). The polyethylene glycol-templated HKUST-1 obtained at room temperature in 10 min exhibited a very high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 1904 m2/g, pore volume of 0.87 cm3/g, and average micropore size of 0....

Metagenomic investigations into the microbial consortia, degradation pathways, and enzyme systems involved in the biodegradation of plastics in a tropical lentic pond sediment
AbstractThe exploitation of exciting features of plastics for diverse applications has resulted in significant plastic waste generation, which negatively impacts environmental compartments, metabolic processes, and the well-being of aquatic ecosystems biota. A shotgun metagenomic approach was deployed to investigate the microbial consortia, degradation pathways, and enzyme systems involved in the degradation of plastics in a tropical lentic pond sediment (APS). Functional annotation of the APS proteome (ORFs) using the PlasticDB database revealed annotation of 1015 proteins of enzymes such as depolymerase, esterase, lipase...

Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 14:131549. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131549. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAfter skin tissue trauma, wound infections caused by bacteria posed a great threat to skin repair. However, resistance to antibiotics, the current treatment of choice for bacterial infections, greatly affected the efficiency of anti-infection and wound healing. Therefore, there has been a critical need for the development of novel antimicrobial materials and advanced therapeutic methods to aid in skin repair. In this paper, rGO-PDA@ZIF-8 nanofillers were prepared by coating graphene oxide (GO) with dopamine (DA), fol...

In vitro evaluation of bone cell response to novel 3D-printable nanocomposite biomaterials for bone reconstruction
J Biomed Mater Res A. 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.1002/jbm.a.37719. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCritically-sized segmental bone defects represent significant challenges requiring grafts for reconstruction. 3D-printed synthetic bone grafts are viable alternatives to structural allografts if engineered to provide appropriate mechanical performance and osteoblast/osteoclast cell responses. Novel 3D-printable nanocomposites containing acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) or methacrylated AESO (mAESO), polyethylene glycol diacrylate, and nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) were produced using masked stereolithography. The effects of volume ...

Coarse-grained modeling and dynamics tracking of nanoparticles diffusion in human gut mucus
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 11:131434. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131434. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe gastrointestinal (GI) tract's mucus layer serves as a critical barrier and a mediator in drug nanoparticle delivery. The mucus layer's diverse molecular structures and spatial complexity complicates the mechanistic study of the diffusion dynamics of particulate materials. In response, we developed a bi-component coarse-grained mucus model, specifically tailored for the colorectal cancer environment, that contained the two most abundant glycoproteins in GI mucus: Muc2 and Muc5AC. This model demonstrated the effect...

AgNPs loaded adenine-modified chitosan composite POSS-PEG hybrid hydrogel with enhanced antibacterial and cell proliferation properties for promotion of infected wound healing
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 11:131575. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131575. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWound healing is a dynamic and complex process, it's urgent to develop new wound dressings with excellent performance to promote wound healing at the different stages. Here, a novel composite hydrogel dressing composed by silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) impregnated adenine-modified chitosan (CS-A) and octafunctionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) of benzaldehyde-terminated polyethylene glycol (POSS-PEG-CHO) solution was presented to solve the problem of wound infection. Modification of chitosan with ade...

Comparison of the solid-phase red cell adherence assay and tube method for detection and identification of red blood cell antibodies
CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first robust, 15-year study comparing methodologic sensitivity to detect clinically significant alloantibodies. The incidence of discordant results between PEG-IAT and the solid-phase technique was low. Among discordant samples, anti-Jka was commonly detected using the solid-phase method but not with the PEG-IAT. In contrast, anti-E was commonly detected by PEG-IAT but not by the solid-phase method.PMID:38607807 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae035 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)
