GLP1 Receptor Agonists and Post –Endoscopic Aspiration Pneumonia: What Plays a Role in Clinical Practice?
We read with great interest the recent article by Yeo et  al,1 which revealed that the use of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) is linked to an increased risk of aspiration pneumonia after gastrointestinal endoscopy. They performed a population-based retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX data set to investigate the risk of post– endoscopic aspiration pneumonia in subjects receiving GLP-1RAs. The final examination included 798,352 subjects who underwent endoscopy, of which 778,253 were GLP-1RA nonusers and 20,099 were GLP-1RA users. (Source: Gastroenterology)

Beyond pulmonary embolism: Alternative diagnosis and incidental findings on CT pulmonary angiography in sickle cell disease
ConclusionThis study underscores the limited additional diagnostic yield of CTPA for identifying alternative diagnoses to PE in SCD patients, with the majority of diagnoses, such as pneumonia, already suggested by chest radiographs. The frequent incidental findings, most of which necessitate further evaluation, highlight the need for a cautious and tailored approach to using CTPA in the SCD population. Antimicrobial resistance prediction by clinical metagenomics in pediatric severe pneumonia patients
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to children ’s health, particularly in respiratory infections. Accurate identification of pathogens and AMR is crucial for targeted antibiotic treatment. Metagen... (Source: Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials)

Use of inhaled corticosteroids and the risk of hospitalisation for pneumonia in children with asthma: a nationwide cohort study
Conclusions In this nationwide cohort study, we found no evidence of an association between ICS use and the risk of hospitalisation for pneumonia among children with asthma, as compared with no use. (Source: Thorax)

Does ICS treatment increase the risk of pneumonia in asthma?
Patients with asthma have an increased risk of being hospitalised for pneumonia. For example, in a study based on the Respiratory Health In Northern Europe data set, Ekbom et al found that adults with asthma had a more than three times higher risk (HR (3.35 (95% CI 1.97 to 5.02)) of hospitalisation for pneumonia than non-asthmatics.1 Kankaanranta et al also found a high incidence of pneumonia in people with asthma when using data from the National Finnish Register of Health Care.2 In that study, the incidence of pneumonia was higher in those with more severe asthma than in the group with non-severe disease. Likewise, Ekbom...

Exploring the immune-inflammatory mechanism of Maxing Shigan Decoction in treating influenza virus A-induced pneumonia based on an integrated strategy of single-cell transcriptomics and systems biology
ConclusionMXSGD may play an anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory role by regulating intestinal microbiome and intestinal metabolic small molecules, and ultimately play a role in the treatment of influenza A virus pneumonia. (Source: European Journal of Medical Research)

Surgical outcomes of the systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunt: risk factors of post-operative acute events and effectiveness of regulation of pulmonary blood flow with metal clips
ConclusionSurgical outcomes after SPS were acceptable and metal clip regulation of pulmonary blood flow appears to be safe and effective. PA/IVS was still a significant risk factor for acute events. (Source: General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Acute liver failure caused by high-dose tigecycline: A case report
We report the case of a 76-year-old female patient with cerebral hemorrhage who received high-dose tigecycline (100 mg q12h) with other drugs for ventilator-associated pneumonia. 25 days after admission, she developed acute liver failure, mainly manifested by abnormally high bilirubin, coagulation dysfunction, and gastrointestinal hemorrhage with hemorrhagic shock. According to the updated Roussel Uclaf causality assessment method, the patient's acute liver injury was most likely caused by tigecycline.PMID:38606856 | DOI:10.5414/CP204549 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics)

Non-invasive ventilation in acute respiratory failure of oncology-hematology patients: What are its current benefits and limitations?
Rev Mal Respir. 2024 Apr 11:S0761-8425(24)00171-2. doi: 10.1016/j.rmr.2024.03.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute respiratory failure (ARF) is a leading cause, along with sepsis, of admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) of patients with active cancer. Presenting variable clinical severity, ARF in onco-hematological patients has differing etiologies, primarily represented by possibly opportunistic acute infectious pneumonia (de novo hypoxemic ARF), and decompensation in chronic cardiac or respiratory diseases (e.g., acute pulmonary edema or exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). In these patients, oro...
