Molecular Cell Biology
I'm a transfer student and I wanted to ask you about how you study at top colleges? I have been accepted to UCLA and UCB and i'm having a difficult time choosing. I want to choose a major that is doable to have above a 3.7 GPA. Any advice for you MD pre meds? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Which Major? PLEASE HELP
About to be a senior, so this decision is final. I've finished all the pre-reqs (except orgo 2). These are my speculations as to what I'd end up with, I know myself well enough to be realistic. Health Science Major: Apply/Graduate w/ 3.80-3.81 Molecular Biology Major: Apply/Graduate w/3.70-3.71 I know people say medical schools don't care, but the course load/difficulty is very different. What would you pick? Assuming ECs are very good, and MCAT is median. Sent from my iPhone using... Which Major? PLEASE HELP (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Too hard of a semester (fall 2016)?
I'm planning on taking cellular and molecular biology (retaking because I withdrew last semester), alongside genetics, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and a gen ed that shouldn't be too hard since it's online. I'm also becoming a peer mentor that requires 4-6 hours commitment per week. Is this a manageable courseload? I'm not sure what to expect from genetics, achem, or bchem, and I already know cell bio is hard. Should I drop one and take it another semester? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Step 1 2016: Official Phloston advice
This message thread is for Phloston. I've read numerous of your posts and some questions about board prep. 1) When doing a first pass through UWorld, do you recommend choosing questions by subcategory or big categories. Example: GI vs. pathophys, phsy, pharm of GI (excluding certain topics such as micro, biostats, etc). This is just an example. 2) You mentioned Kaplan is good for only doing certain sections such as micro and molecular biology; would you recommend it only for the sole... Do I still need an SMP?
When I came here six years ago asking what to do about my 2.7 ugrad GPA (degree in molecular biology), I received the great advice that I should find something else to do with my life. So that's what I did. I gave up the idea of being a doctor and did medical research for a couple years before going back to ugrad for Comp. Sci. I took a year's worth of CS courses but then became more interested in Physics and ended up doing an accelerated Physics curriculum before going to Physics grad... Do I still need an SMP? Job opportunities with an MD-PhD in BME?
If I were to complete an MD-PhD with a focus on Biomedical Engineering, what jobs in healthcare (so the MD part specifically) would best suit me based on my education? I definitely know that I want to go into cellular/molecular biology bench research with the PhD. I want to do something not too different with the MD so I would prefer to stray away from surgery. I was thinking among the lines of medical laboratory technician but I don't really know what's out there. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Follow up to Alien abductions or Can biology be quantified?
The attached paper was promised to explain male abductions but is really a crude attempt to define the power of entropy in biology and perhaps quantify biologic process.  Refining this concept into a usable methodology requires great effort from multiple disciplines.  This method will be an attempt at quantifying biological processes.  Entropy is not time dependent but does depend on the current state of organization and all of the probable conditions that are available; thus, defining the next stage of development.  Traversing each stage gives a sense of time dependency since order of processes is dete...

US citizen with UK undergraduate degree applying to US med schools?
I am a US citizen who decided to go to the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. In terms of career aspirations, I want to do medical research, perhaps at the CDC or in a university setting. From what I have read on this excellent forum, if I want a US medical degree, I should transfer to a US undergraduate program. But if I remain here (I love it here) and receive my undergraduate degree in molecular biology from the Univ. of St. Andrews, is there a path to US med school? And if so, what do I do about supplying US med schools with four years of college grades? St. Andrews does not report the first two years except on a ...

Don't know what to do with my life :(
by jakers (Posted Tue Aug 19, 2014 11:24 am)I'm going to be a senior in molecular biology and at this point I don't know what to do with my life...I'm almost in tears...When I first entered college I went on the pre-med track, even took some honors classes. But my GPA isn't the best (3.2), I don't have any real extracurriculars, very little volunteer experience, and no research experience. I spent most of my time in college working mainly because I needed the money and I really regret that now. I have not taken the MCAT nor have I studied for it because I gave up on trying to become a doctor. At this point, with only an ok ...
