Challenges in the management of new daily persistent headache at a tertiary headache center-A retrospective real-world evidence study
CONCLUSION: In this study we add real-world evidence to suggest that prophylactic drugs conventionally used for treating chronic migraine and chronic tension-type headache have limited utility for treating NDPH; however, a partial response in 26% of patients using candesartan and 15% of patients using mirtazapine warrants further investigation in randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled trials.PMID:38646979 | DOI:10.1111/head.14715 (Source: Headache)

Association between migraine and exclusive breastfeeding: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Females with migraine exclusively breastfeed their infants for a shorter duration compared to females without migraine, suggesting the need to better support this population through education on the safety and benefits of exclusive breastfeeding and better access to safe and effective treatment of migraine in lactating females.PMID:38644657 | DOI:10.1111/head.14713 (Source: Headache)

Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus Initially Diagnosed As Cluster Headache, Complicated by Delayed Eruption
This report elucidates the case of a 61-year-old Japanese male with painful trigeminal neuropathy attributed to VZV that was initially diagnosed as cluster headache, mainly due to the delayed cutaneous eruption. Contrary to the expected pattern of cluster headache presentations, there was no discernible fluctuation in headache severity. The transient improvement of symptoms following interventions tailored for cluster headache management, including pure oxygen inhalation and subcutaneous sumatriptan injection, inadvertently contributed to a delay in accurate diagnosis. The importance of distinguishing HZO from cluster head...

Effectiveness of Laser Acupuncture for Reducing Pain and Increasing Mouth Opening Range in Individuals with Temporomandibular Disorder: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis
AbstractPurpose of ReviewLaser acupuncture (LA) demonstrates promising results in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. However, its effects on temporomandibular disorder (TMD) are not yet fully understood. Thus, the aim of this systematic review and network meta-analysis was to assess the effectiveness of LA on pain intensity and maximum mouth opening range (MMO) related to TMD. A search was carried out in 11 electronic databases and references of included studies to locate randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that evaluated LA as a primary treatment for TMD. The risk of bias was assessed using the RoB 2 tool. Network ...

Migraine headache and other risk factors associated with glaucoma among the adult population living in Armenia: a case –control study
ConclusionTimely case detection of glaucoma among those with average/low socio-economic status and those with family history of glaucoma could prevent further progression of the disease. Further studies to explore the relationship between migraine headache and specific types of glaucoma may be worthwhile. (Source: International Ophthalmology)

Migraine treatment consensus document of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (SEMFYC), Society of Primary Care Medicine (SEMERGEN) and Spanish Association of Migraine and Headache (AEMICE) on migraine treatment
Med Clin (Barc). 2024 Apr 19:S0025-7753(24)00137-4. doi: 10.1016/j.medcli.2024.02.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMigraine is a disease with a high prevalence and incidence, in addition to being highly disabling, causing a great impact on the patient's quality of life at a personal, family and work level, but also social, given its high expense due to its direct (care) and indirect (presenteeism and work absenteeism) costs. The multiple and recent developments in its pathophysiological knowledge and in its therapy require updating and, therefore, in this article the Spanish scientific societies most involved in its stud...

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation in Postoperative Analgesia: A Narrative Review
AbstractPurpose of ReviewRecent research has shown the effectiveness of peripheral nerve stimulators (PNS) in managing chronic pain conditions. Ongoing studies aim to explore its potential application in treating acute postoperative pain states. The purpose of this systematic review is to assess the role of PNS in providing relief for postoperative pain.Recent FindingsClinical studies investigating the use of peripheral nerve stimulators (PNS) for analgesia following various surgeries, such as total knee arthroplasty, anterior cruciate ligament repair, ankle arthroplasty, rotator cuff repair, hallux valgus correction, and ...

The Environment and Headache: a Narrative Review
AbstractPurpose of ReviewIn this narrative review, we summarize the peer-reviewed literature published between 2017 and 2022 that evaluated ambient environmental risk factors for primary headache disorders, which affect more than half of the population globally. Primary headache disorders include migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), and trigeminal and autonomic cephalalgias (TAC).Recent findingsWe identified 17 articles that met the inclusion criteria via PubMed or Google Scholar. Seven studies (41%) relied on data from US populations. The remaining studies were conducted in China, Taiwan, Germany, Ghana, Japan, the Neth...

The effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields exposure on human self-reported symptoms: A systematic review of human experimental studies
DISCUSSION: Limitations of evidence: experimental conditions are substantially different from real-life situations in the duration, frequency, distance and position of the exposure. Most studies were conducted in young, healthy volunteers, who might be more resilient to RF-EMF than the general population. The outcomes of interest in this systematic review were symptoms, which are self-reported. The available information did not allow to assess the potential effects of exposures beyond acute exposure and in elderly or in chronically ill people. It cannot be ruled out that a real EMF effect in IEI-EMF groups is masked by a m...

Radiofrequency regulation of the sphenopalatine ganglion in managing herpes zoster ophthalmicus neuralgia: A case series
CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that CT-guided radiofrequency regulation of the pterygopalatine fossa sphenopalatine ganglion was a safe and effective intervention for pain in patients with trigeminal ophthalmic zoster neuralgia, suggesting that it may be a therapeutic option if other treatments fail.PMID:38640323 | PMC:PMC11029985 | DOI:10.1097/MD.0000000000037884 (Source: Herpes)

Severe fibromyalgia alleviated by the unique muscle relaxation method of applying low force: A case report
Medicine (Baltimore). 2024 Apr 19;103(16):e37929. doi: 10.1097/MD.0000000000037929.ABSTRACTRATIONALE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by idiopathic persistent chronic pain in the ligaments or musculoskeletal system, and more than half of the patients with FM might have migraine headaches. Direct musculoskeletal intervention could be a non-pharmacological management to relieve symptoms. However, patients with severe FM often have intense pain from only a soft touch, thereby rendering musculoskeletal intervention challenging.PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old man had progressing intense pain, and this affected his everyday l...

Healthcare utilisation and economic burden of migraines among bank employees in China: a probabilistic modelling study
ConclusionsThe study points to the need to raise awareness of migraines across all stakeholders and to improve the organisation of the migraine care system. A substantial economic burden of migraines on the healthcare system, employers, and society at large was highlighted. These cost estimates offer evidence-based benchmarks for assessing economic savings from improved migraine management, and can also draw the attention of Chinese policymakers to prioritise migraine policies within the banking and other office-based occupations.
