Evaluation of Masseteric Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Patients With Migraine
CONCLUSION: In future studies, using mVEMP together with cVEMP and oVEMP tests, which allow evaluation of otolith organs and vestibular nuclei, will be valuable in determining the lesion location.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25607901.PMID:38635409 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJA-23-00256 (Source: American Journal of Audiology)

Nonspecific oral medications versus anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide monoclonal antibodies for migraine: A  systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
CONCLUSIONS: There is high certainty that CGRP mAbs are more effective than placebo, but the effect size is small. When feasible, CGRP mAbs may be prescribed as first-line preventives; topiramate or divalproex could be as effective but are less well tolerated. The findings of this study support the recently published 2024 position of the American Headache Society on the use of CGRP mAbs as the first-line treatment.PMID:38634515 | DOI:10.1111/head.14693 (Source: Headache)

First Local Experience of Intra-Cavitary Yttrium-90 Citrate Colloid Irradiation via Ommaya Reservoir for Refractory Cystic Craniopharyngioma: a Case Report
Nucl Med Mol Imaging. 2024 May;58(3):129-139. doi: 10.1007/s13139-024-00838-5. Epub 2024 Jan 16.ABSTRACTCraniopharyngioma is uncommon benign intracranial tumour that can be cured by surgical resection followed by conventional radiotherapy. However, its anatomical localisation makes the treatment hazardous or impossible. This case report aims to discuss the first local experience of using beta-emitting Yttrium-90 radioisotope in treating a patient with refractory cystic craniopharyngioma. A 43-year-old male who has underlying refractory cystic craniopharyngioma complicated with visual impairment and panhypopituitarism was r...

Genetic and Phenotypic Profiling of Triptan Users in a Swedish Cluster Headache Cohort
AbstractUp to 25% of individuals who live with cluster headache (CH), an extremely painful primary headache disorder, do not adequately respond to the first-line treatment, triptans. Studies have indicated that genetic variants can play a role in treatment response. Likewise, differences in clinical characteristics can give clues to mechanisms underlying triptan non-response. Our aim was to investigate five genetic variants previously implicated in triptan response and their relation to triptan usage in our Swedish CH cohort and to investigate potential distinctions in clinical characteristics. 545 CH patients were screene...

An economic evaluation of eptinezumab for the preventive treatment of migraine in the UK, with consideration for natural history and work productivity
ConclusionsThis economic evaluation shows that from a societal perspective, eptinezumab is a cost-effective treatment in patients with  ≥ 4 migraine days per month and for whom ≥ 3 other preventive migraine treatments have failed.Trial registrationN/A.Graphical Abstract (Source: The Journal of Headache and Pain)

Dynamic fluctuations of salivary CGRP levels during migraine attacks: association with clinical variables and phenotypic characterization
ConclusionsOur study underscores the dynamic nature of migraine at a molecular level and emphasizes the importance of integrating clinical variables, such as depressive symptoms, in understanding its pathophysiology. The identification of distinct migraine subtypes based on CGRP dependence suggests potential opportunities for personalized treatment approaches. (Source: The Journal of Headache and Pain)

Focused Update on Migraine and Vertigo Comorbidity
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo provide an update on comorbidity of vestibular symptoms and migraine.Recent FindingsMultisensory processing and integration is a key concept for understanding mixed presentation of migraine and vestibular symptoms. Here, we discuss how vestibular migraine should be distinguished from a secondary migraine phenomenon in which migraine symptoms may coincide with or triggered by another vestibular disorder. We also have some updates on the diagnostic criteria of vestibular migraine, its pathophysiology, and common approaches used for its treatment.SummaryAs a common clinical presentation of migraine...

Durable Effects of Acupuncture for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
AbstractPurpose of ReviewKnee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative joint disease which can result in chronic pain and disability. The current interventions available for KOA often fail to provide long-lasting effects, highlighting the need for new treatment options that can offer durable benefits. Previous studies have suggested the efficacy of acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) with its durability remaining uncertain. In this review, we aimed to investigate the durability of the efficacy after completion of treatment.Recent FindingsWe performed thorough searches of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Cen...

Sudden unexpected death in a middle-aged woman
Clinical presentation The patient was a woman in her 50s with a history of migraine and Raynaud’s disease. She had episodes of severe migraine that only partially responded to triptans, and worsened during pregnancy approximately 14 years prior, and also during the perimenopausal period approximately 2 years ago. After menopause, her migraines improved, occurred once a month, and responded well to triptans. She had elevated cholesterol. She had no known history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, autoimmune disease or connective tissue disease. She was not on ho...
