Antitumor effect of YM155, a novel small-molecule survivin suppressant, via mitochondrial apoptosis in human MFH/UPS.
Abstract Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis family, which is known to inhibit mitochondrial apoptosis. Survivin is highly expressed in cancers and plays an important role in cancer cell survival, and increased survivin expression is an unfavorable prognostic marker in cancer patients. YM155, a novel small-molecule survivin suppressant, selectively suppresses survivin expression, resulting in the induction of apoptosis in various malignancies. However, the roles of survivin in human malignant fibrous histiocytoma/undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (MFH/UPS) have not been studied. In the pr...

Breast hematoma masking a sarcoma.
We present the case of a sarcoma (malignant fibrous histiocytoma) of the breast that debuted as a lump. The patient associated the lump with trauma, and the clinical, sonographic, and cytological findings were suggestive of a hematoma. The lump grew rapidly, and the follow-up sonogram one month later clearly revealed hypervascular solid poles. This atypical presentation is useful for reviewing the management of lesions suggestive of hematomas, which are often associated with nonspecific findings and occasionally with signs that raise suspicion of malignancy. The emergence of what appears to be a hematoma in the breast, eve...

Unusual Malignant Solid Neoplasms of the Kidney: Cross-Sectional Imaging Findings.
Abstract Malignant kidney neoplasms are the most frequently encountered solid kidney masses. Although renal cell carcinoma is the major renal malignancy, other solid malignant renal masses should be considered in the differential diagnosis of solid renal masses that do not contain a macroscopic fatty component. In this pictorial essay, we present the imaging findings of a primitive neuroectodermal tumor, primary liposarcoma of the kidney, primary neuroendocrine tumor, leiomyosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, sclerosing fibrosarcoma and renal metastasis of osteosarcoma. PMI...

A rare case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (pleomorphic undifferentiated sarcoma NOS) of the vocal fold.
We report a new case, which originated in the true vocal fold of a 65-year-old man. The mass was removed via CO2 laser excision with preservation of the vocal fold and without the need for further treatment. At 3 years of follow-up, the patient remained recurrence-free. Primary cardiac malignant fibrous histiocytoma with abdominal wall metastasis
We present a rare case of cardiac malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH; undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma); to date, fewer than 100 cases of cardiac MFH have been reported. In this case, transthoracic echocardiography revealed cardiac tumors in the left atrium (LA) of a 53-year-old woman with a 3-month history of worsening dyspnea; the largest tumor was found to protrude through the mitral valve in diastole, causing stenosis. Three of the four tumors were resected during emergency surgery; however, the residual tumor extension into the left pulmonary vein could not be removed. Histological findings of the resected tumors...

Cutaneous Metastatic Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma from a Mediastinal Sarcoma.
We report a case of cutaneous metastatic undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma of the buttocks occurring in a 73-year-old man diagnosed with mediastinal sarcoma 4 years previously. He first noticed the mass approximately 2 months previously. Histological findings with immunomarkers led to a final diagnosis of cutaneous metastatic sarcoma from mediastinal undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. Neurofibromatosis type 1 and malignancy in childhood.
CONCLUSION: Although benign brain tumors with NF1 are more common high-grade brain tumors also occur. Thus, careful and regular follow-up is crucial for early detection of malignancy in NF1 patients. PMID: 26073032 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Clinical Genetics)

Recurrent Atypical Fibroxanthoma Versus Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma
We report 2 cases of recurrent AFX. There is ongoing controversy over the diagnosis of AFX versus malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) in the clinical context of recurrent AFX. Histopathologic diagnosis of fibrohistiocytic neoplasms can be quite challenging and small foci of cancer can be easily overlooked. This is particularly problematic when scarring associated with recurrent tumors is present. The utility of en face sections, as utilized in Mohs micrographical surgery, and the employment of immunohistochemical stains may be helpful in diagnosis. Recurrence of AFX can occur but is difficult to distinguish from MFH. (Sou...

Incremental Value of Live/Real Time Three‐Dimensional Transesophageal Echocardiography over the Two‐Dimensional Technique in the Assessment of Primary Cardiac Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma
We describe a case of primary cardiac malignant fibrous histiocytoma where live/real time three‐dimensional transesophageal echocardiography added incremental value to the two‐dimensional modalities. Specifically, the three‐dimensional technique allowed us to delineate the true extent and infiltration of the tumor, to identify characteristics of the tumor mass suggestive of its malignant nature, and to quantitatively assess the total tumor burden. FDG PET/CT Findings of Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of the Stomach
Abstract: A 22-year-old man underwent an FDG PET/CT scan to evaluate possible malignancy due to melena and fever for 1 month. The images demonstrated intense FDG activity with an SUVmax of 24.6 in a large mass in the fundus of the stomach. Gastric malignant fibrous histiocytoma was histopathologically confirmed. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a high-grade and aggressive sarcoma, which usually occurs in the limbs or retroperitoneum. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma in the stomach is rare. Management of extremity malignant fibrous histiocytoma: A 10-year experience
Conclusion An adequate resection margin during treatment for the primary MFH tumor achieves optimal results for local disease control. It influences the OS rate, because local-recurrence-related distant metastasis is significantly associated with high mortality. (Source: Formosan Journal of Surgery)
