Neurodevelopmental outcomes after prenatal exposure to lamotrigine monotherapy in women with epilepsy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Lamotrigine has become one of the most commonly prescribed antiseizure medications (ASM) in epileptic women during pregnancy and therefore requires regular updates regarding its safety. The aim of this study w... (Source: BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth)

To examine or not to examine, this is not the question: a diagnostic exclusion of 32-year-old virgo intacta presented with advanced non-hpv related cervical cancer and ovarian metastases
Introduction and aims of the study: A 32-year-old woman with schizophrenia and obesity presented with heavy vaginal bleeding and lower abdominal pain. She denied any sexual activity and her progressively heavy menstruations were falsely associated with lamotrigine use. Over 3 years she started having a vaginal discharge with a strong odor. Due to an intact hymen, she wasn ’t examined vaginally. (Source: European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 676: Direct Immersion & ndash;Solid Phase Microextraction for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Patients with Mood Disorders
This article discusses a new method for monitoring drug concentrations in blood samples from patients with mood disorders. The method uses solid-phase microextraction to extract analytes directly from blood samples. It has been adapted to identify the most commonly used drugs in mood disorders, including amitriptyline, citalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, trazodone, duloxetine, venlafaxine, lamotrigine, quetiapine, olanzapine, and mirtazapine. The analysis is carried out using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy. The proposed DI-SPME/LC-MS method allows for a simple and quick sc...

Retention Rates and Successful Treatment with Antiseizure Medications in Newly-Diagnosed Epilepsy Patients
CONCLUSION: Second-generation ASMs have the advantage of more successful treatment with fewer ASM regimen changes compared with first-generation drugs. Various comorbid conditions as well as age and sex should be considered when selecting ASMs.PMID:38288649 | PMC:PMC10827640 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2022.0539 (Source: Yonsei Medical Journal)

Greater need for treatment optimization in patients with epilepsy initiating adjunctive therapy: Results of a retrospective claims analysis of antiseizure medication drug load in the United States
CONCLUSION: Concomitant ASM drug load increased prior to addition of new ASM, with higher increases observed among patients starting branded vs unbranded ASMs, followed by slight decreases thereafter. Total drug load increased linearly among all patients. These findings underscore the need for ongoing ASM regimen evaluation and treatment optimization in patients with epilepsy.PMID:38277849 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109649 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Age-Dependent Phenomena of 6-Hz Corneal Kindling Model in Mice
This study investigates the impact of aging on 6-Hz corneal kindling in young-adult mice and middle-aged mice. We found that the kindling acquisition of the 6-Hz corneal kindling model was delayed in middle-aged mice when compared to young-adult mice. While the seizure stage and incidence of generalized seizures (GS) were similar between the two age groups, the duration of GS in the kindled middle-aged mice was shorter than that in the kindled young-adult mice. Besides, all kindled mice, regardless of age, were resistant to phenytoin sodium (PHT), valproate sodium (VPA), and lamotrigine (LGT), whereas middle-aged mice exhi...

Long-term protective effects of lamotrigine in a rat ovarian ischemia-reperfusion model
In this study, we aimed to investigate the long-term anatomical, histological and biochemical protective effects of lamotrigine in ovariums in the ischemia - reperfusion (I-R) model created experimentally in rats. A total of 40 female Sprague-Dawley rats, 14 weeks old, weighing 220-270 g were used in the study. The subjects were randomly distributed to form 4 groups named SHAM group, I - R group, I - R + Lamotrigine (LTG) group and R + LTG group. Under general anesthesia, the ovaries of the rats were reached and ischemia was created for 3 h with vascular clamps. 20 mg / kg LTG was administered intraperitoneally (ip.) to gr...

How to handle a missed or delayed dose of lacosamide in pediatric patients with epilepsy? a mode-informed individual dosing
This study aims to investigate the effects on the pharmacokinetic (PK) of lacosamide (LCM), and to guide the individual dosing regimens for children and ones with poor medication adherence. Population PK research was performed based on 164 plasma samples of 113 pediatric patients aged from 1.75 to 14.42 years old. The PK characteristic of LCM was developed by a one-compartment model with first-order elimination. The typical value of apparent clearance (CL) and apparent volume of distribution (Vd) was 1.91 L·h-1 and 56.53 L respectively. In the final model, the variability of CL was significantly associated with the body s...
