Depression and anxiety among patients with epilepsy: A cross-sectional study from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
CONCLUSION: This study found that PWE had a higher prevalence of MDD and GAD than the general population. However, this accepted paradigm has yet to reflect a meaningful change in constructing condition-specific recommendations for PWE. Our study revealed that the presence of subjectively recognized signs of an impending ictal episode was significantly associated with a higher risk of moderate and severe depression and anxiety. Furthermore, factors that increase the susceptibility to seizures were associated with a higher risk of depression and anxiety. Irregular medication use was associated with a higher risk of moderate...

Determination of lamotrigine in human plasma by HPLC-PDA. Application to forensic samples
ConclusionA new HPLC method for the determination of lamotrigine in human plasma was developed and validated. A liquid-liquid extraction using small volumes of buffer and ethylacetate was optimized. The proposed method is suitable for forensic toxicological analysis. (Source: Forensic Science, Medicine, and Pathology)

Psychiatric and behavioral concerns of perampanel with concomitant levetiracetam in children with epilepsy
CONCLUSION: When expanding the use of anti-seizure medications in pediatric patients, real-world evidence on safety issues is crucial for pediatric epileptologists. We confirmed that combination therapy with PER and LEV did not increase the risk profile of PBAEs.PMID:38547767 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109740 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Characterization of the intrahippocampal kainic acid model in female mice with a special focus on seizure suppression by antiseizure medications
Exp Neurol. 2024 Mar 9:114749. doi: 10.1016/j.expneurol.2024.114749. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite special challenges in the medical treatment of women with epilepsy, in particular preclinical animal studies were focused on males for decades and females have only recently moved into the focus of scientific interest. The intrahippocampal kainic acid (IHKA) mouse model of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is one of the most studied models in males reproducing electroencephalographic (EEG) and histopathological features of human TLE. Hippocampal paroxysmal discharges (HPDs) were described as drug resistant focal seizures i...

Long-term low-dose lamotrigine for paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia: a two-year investigation of cognitive function in children
ConclusionProlonged duration of untreated PKD in children may elevate the risk of ADHD comorbidity. Notably, following a 2-year lamotrigine regimen, enhancements were observed in both cognitive test outcomes and ADHD symptomatology. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Drug-resistant juvenile myoclonic epilepsy: A literature review
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2024 Mar 8:S0035-3787(24)00422-3. doi: 10.1016/j.neurol.2024.02.385. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe ILAE's Task Force on Nosology and Definitions revised in 2022 its definition of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), the most common idiopathic generalized epilepsy disorder, but this definition may well change again in the future. Although good drug response could almost be a diagnostic criterion for JME, drug resistance (DR) is observed in up to a third of patients. It is important to distinguish this from pseudoresistance, which is often linked to psychosocial problems or psychiatric comorbidities. Af...

Association of Commonly Prescribed Antepartum Medications and Incidence of Orofacial Clefting
CONCLUSION: New associations between commonly prescribed antepartum medications and orofacial clefting were found. These findings should be confirmed as causality is not assessed in this report. Practitioners should be aware of the potential increased risk associated with these medications.PMID:38449319 | DOI:10.1177/10556656241237679 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)
