Current molecular methods for the detection of GB virus C
The GB virus C (GBV-C), also referred to as hepatitis G virus, is a RNA hepatitis virus, which infects humans naturally and can cause high levels of viremia, which, however, in most cases, does not lead to serious illness. It is not usually routinely screened in clinical laboratories, though its presence in patients infected with other viruses such as hepatitis C virus and HIV has been commonly reported. The virus can be detected in the blood of infected individuals using reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) mainly. It is a technique that is commonly used for different RNA material detection and other s...

Prevention of Zika virus and related complications
Zika virus disease is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. People with Zika virus disease can have symptoms, including mild fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, or headache. These symptoms normally last for 2–7 days. There is scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and Guillain–Barré syndrome. Association with other neurological complications are also being investigated. The aim of the present review is to summarize and discuss the evidence base data regarding Zika virus and related complications. (Source: Reviews in Medical Microbiology)

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus decontamination: is ultraviolet radiation more effective than vapor-phase hydrogen peroxide?
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an increasing problem for patients, clinicians, and epidemiologists. Patients risk MRSA colonization upon admittance in areas not properly disinfected. As high-level decontaminants, both ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the UV-C waveband as well as vapor-phase hydrogen peroxide (VHP) have been utilized to limit nosocomial infection cost and concomitant disease. In order to determine whether UV irradiation is more effective than VHP in the control and prevention of MRSA infection, 12 studies with N = 20 discrete data points were analyzed to determine efficacy based on l...

Carvacrol and thymol: strong antimicrobial agents against resistant isolates
Antibiotics have been effective in treatment of infectious diseases, but resistance to these drugs has led to the severe consequences. In recent years, medicinal herbs have been used for the prevention and protection against infectious diseases. Thymol and carvacrol are active ingredients of family Lamiaceae; these components have antibacterial and antifungal effects. In this review, we survey antimicrobial properties of carvacrol and thymol. Available data from different studies (microbiological, retrieve from PubMed, and Scopus databases) about antimicrobial affects carvacrol and thymol was evaluated. Carvacrol and thymo...

Gut microbiota and depression: from pathogenesis to new therapeutic strategies
Depression is a common mental disorder, which can be long lasting or recurrent, substantially impairing an individual's ability to function in their daily life. The complex interplay of biological, genetic, and environmental factors is important on the development of the disease. Accumulating evidence shed light on the association of dysbiosis of gut microbiota with depression. Gut microbiota may play an important role in central nervous system function, namely through inflammation, and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, and by affecting neurotransmission. Certain gut microbial strains have been shown to may play...

Selection of promising strain of Lactobacillus for treating vaginal infections
Lactobacilli have been known to inhibit in-vitro growth of many organisms and have been used as probiotic to treat eclectic range of gastrointestinal and/or vaginal disorders. Four Lactobacillus strains, namely, Lactobacillus helveticus MTCC (Microbial Type Culture Collection) 5463, Lactobacillus rhamnosus MTCC 5462, L. rhamnosus (NS6) MTCC 5946, Lactobacillus fermentum (PD2) belonging to different species were analysed based on their properties, such as hydrophobicity, arginine deiminase assay, inhibitory effect of lactobacilli to some of the pathogenic microorganism indicator of bacterial vaginosis, ability to produce H2...

Evaluation of probiotic cream by in-vitro tests for treatment of bacterial vaginosis conditions
Probiotic bacteria are used to treat broad range of gastrointestinal and/or vaginal disorders. A vaginal cream containing probiotic Lactobacillus helveticus (Microbial Type Culture Collection) MTCC 5463 was developed to treat vaginal infections. The effectiveness of probiotic cream was compared with market creams (usually prescribed by doctors) by performing different in-vitro tests, that is, hydrophobicity, arginine deiminase assay, inhibition of vaginal pathogens, ability to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2),lactic acid production, antibiotic susceptibility against various antibiotics used for treating bacterial vaginosis...

An overview of the recent findings in the cultivation of Leishmania
The cultivation of parasites of the genus Leishmania has been a subject of much interest due to the necessity of performing biochemical and immunological studies with isolated parasites in an effort to develop future therapeutic and preventive tools. Foetal calf serum (FCS) as the main part of Leishmania spp. cultivation media is highly expensive, and reliable supply of it is very difficult to obtain. Here, we take an overview of the new replacements for FCS in the cultivation process of Leishmania spp. and probability of optimizing them for parasites culture procedure. A precise review was conducted based on the database ...

Psoas abscess: aetiological and clinical review
Psoas muscle abscess is a rare infection that presents a diagnostic challenge to the physician and requires a high index of suspicion. A series of five patients with psoas abscess were diagnosed over a period in a tertiary care hospital. In this series, three of the five cases had primary psoas abscess in which Staphylococcus aureus was identified to be the causative agent. The other two patients had secondary psoas abscess associated with the spinal tuberculosis. Predisposing factors in these patients included diabetes mellitus, malnutrition, haematoma in the psoas muscle following trauma and HIV infection. The most commo...

Using PCR assay for detection and subtyping of Ureaplasma parvum in women with recurrent abortion
The objectives of this study were to investigate the occurrence of Ureaplasma parvum in women with recurrent abortion and to determine the distribution of U. parvum serovars (1, 3, 6, 14) in women with recurrent abortion by conventional PCR technique. In total, 130 samples including vaginal bleeding, vaginal swab, and urine were collected from women with recurrent abortion and 40 samples including vaginal swab and urine from control women without recurrent abortion. Through the study, two types of media were used, Ureaplasma broth (IH Broth) and Ureaplasma agar (IH Agar). The positive isolates for Ureaplasma spp. were inve...
