Acute Kidney Injury in Patients with the Coronavirus Disease 2019: A Multicenter Study
Conclusion: Our findings show that admission SOFA score was an independent risk factor for AKI in COVID-19 patients, and patients with AKI had higher in-hospital mortality. Moreover, AKI development after 72 h of admission was related to prolonged hospitalization time.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Premature Stroke Secondary to Severe Hypertension Results from Liddle Syndrome Caused by a Novel SCNN1B Mutation
Conclusions:We identified a novelSCNN1B mutation (c.1849C#x3e;A) in a family affected by LS. Patients with LS, especially those with severe hypertension, should be alert for the occurrence of premature stroke. Timely diagnosis using genetic testing and tailored treatment with amiloride can help LS patients to avoid severe complications.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Remote Ischemic Preconditioning Reduces the Risk of Contrast-Induced Nephropathy in Patients with Moderate Renal Impairment Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Angiography: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Based on 16 RCTs, this meta-analysis shows that RIPC can reduce the risk of CIN in patients with moderate renal impairment undergoing PCI/CA. However, this needs to be confirmed by further high-quality evidence.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Etiology and Management of Acute Metabolic Acidosis: An Update
Background: The etiology of acute metabolic acidosis (aMA) is heterogeneous, and the consequences are potentially life-threatening. The aim of this article was to summarize the causes and management of aMA from a clinician ’s perspective.Summary: We performed a systematic search on PubMed, applying the following search terms: “acute metabolic acidosis,” “lactic acidosis,” “metformin” AND “acidosis,” “unbalanced solutions” AND “acidosis,” “bicarbonate” AND “acidosis” AND “outcome,” “acute metabolic acidosis” AND “management,” and “acute metabolic acidosis” AND “renal repla...

Significance of Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin as a Biomarker for the Diagnosis of Diabetic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusion: The meta-analysis has shown that NGAL may be useful for DKD classification and also has a potential diagnostic value for normoalbuminuric kidney disease. Large-scale prospective studies are required to clarify its role in the diagnosis and risk stratification of patients with DKD.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Renal Involvement in Systemic Sclerosis: An Update
Background: Systemic sclerosis is an immune-mediated rheumatic disease characterized by vascular abnormalities, tissue fibrosis and autoimmune phenomena.Summary: Renal disease occurring in patients with systemic sclerosis may have a variable clinicopathological picture. The most specific renal condition associated with systemic sclerosis is scleroderma renal crisis, characterized by acute onset of renal failure and severe hypertension. Although the management of scleroderma renal crisis was revolutionized by the introduction of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, there is still a significant proportion of patients wi...

Overexpression of microRNA-136-3p Alleviates Myocardial Injury in Coronary Artery Disease via the Rho A/ROCK Signaling Pathway
Conclusion: In conclusion, the overexpression of miR-136-3p could potentially impede myocardial injury in vitro and in vivo in CAD through the blockade of the Rho A/ROCK signaling pathway, highlighting a potential miR-136-3p functional relevance in the treatment of CAD.Kidney Blood Press Res 2020;45:477 –496 (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Urinary Metabolic Profile of Patients with Transfusion-Dependent β-Thalassemia Major Undergoing Deferasirox Therapy
Discussion: The major finding of this work is that β-TM patients and controls exhibit different concentrations of some metabolites in the urine. Early recognition of urinary abnormalities may be useful to detect and prevent kidney damage.Kidney Blood Press Res 2020;45:455 –466 (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Kidney Transplant Modifies the Architecture and Microenvironment of Basal Cell Carcinomas
Conclusion: Data comparing the microarchitecture of BCC in normal subjects and KT patients are scanty, and the present study is the first to use nonlinear image analysis techniques to this aim. The observed differences underscore the relevance of T-cell suppression in cancer behavior. These data suggest that BCC develops in treated patients with specific biological characteristics which should be further analyzed in terms of therapeutic response.Kidney Blood Press Res 2020;45:368 –377 (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)
