Posttransplantation Hypomagnesemia as a Predictor of Better Graft Function after Transplantation
Conclusions: Hypomagnesemia from 1 to 12 months after renal transplantation is associated with a better allograft function up to 5 years posttransplant. This relationship was found to hold true after accounting for baseline allograft function and the presence of slow graft function.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Increased Glomerular Hydrostatic Pressure is Associated with Tubular Creatinine Reabsorption in Healthy Subjects
Conclusions: These findings suggest that tubular reabsorption of Cr can occur in some cases. Intrarenal glomerular hemodynamic burden may be related to tubular creatinine reabsorption, which possibly leads to lowerCcr values.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Renal Tubular Acidosis in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Conclusion: RTA should be considered in SLE patients even if they have normal eGFR values. This is the largest study to examine the prevalence of RTA in SLE patients in the literature.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Acute Kidney Disease Increases the Risk of Post-Kidney Biopsy Bleeding Complications
Conclusion: Regarding the bleeding risk, there was noninferiority of NPS over RTU. AKD contributes to higher risks of bleeding complications after kidney biopsy.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

TMEM63C, a Potential Novel Target for Albuminuria Development, Is Regulated by MicroRNA-564 and Transforming Growth Factor beta in Human Renal Cells
Conclusions: MiR-564 reduced TMEM63C expression in HEK 293 and human podocytes (hPC). The treatment of renal cells with TGF- ß led to an increased expression of TMEM63C. Moreover, a reduced TMEM63C expression was associated with a changed ratio of EMT marker proteins such as α-smooth muscle actin versus E-cadherin in HEK 293 and decreased nephrin expression in hPC. In addition, cell viability was reduced upon inhibition of TMEM63C expression in HEK 293. This study demonstrates first mechanisms involved in TMEM63C expression regulation and a link to EMT in renal cells.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

The Prevalence of Metabolic Acidosis in Patients with Different Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease: Single-Centre Study
Conclusions: (1) MA is more frequent in patients with more advanced stages of CKD. (2) RRT reduces the prevalence of MA. (3) In PD patients, MA is rare. (4) Aetiology of CKD seems not to have a significant impact on MA prevalence.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Phosphate and Kidney Healthy Aging
Background: The aging population is increasing rapidly, much faster than our understanding on how to promote healthy aging free of multimorbidities. The aging kidney shows a decline in its function. Whether this decline is preventable or physiological is still debated. Main risks factors for developing CKD are aging common comorbidites, such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Phosphate is vital for our organism, but it is also present in a great variety of food products as food additive and preservative. Due to the higher consumption of processed food in the last century, concern has arisen if a chronic high consumpti...

Rituximab, Cyclophosphamide, and Corticosteroids for ANCA Vasculitis: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Backgrounds: ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) frequently present with a chronic relapsing course. Relapse leads to an increased need for therapeutic agents and consequent toxicity.Summary: When referring to the available options for the management of AAV, the efficacy of glucocorticoids (GCs) is unquestionable. However, similarly unquestionable are their side effects. It has been more than 40 years since the efficacy of cyclophosphamide (CYC) as an add-on therapy to GCs in the management of necrotizing vasculitis has been proven. At the same time, concerns about the devastating side effects related to a prolonged exposure ...

Causes and Consequences of Metabolic Acidosis in Patients after Kidney Transplantation
Background: Metabolic acidosis (MA) is a common complication in kidney transplantation (KTx). It is more prevalent in KTx than in CKD, and it occurs at higher glomerular filtration rates. The pathophysiologic understanding of MA in KTx and its clinical impact has been highlighted by few recent studies. However, no guidelines exist yet for the treatment of MA after KTx.Summary: MA in KTx seems to share pathophysiologic mechanisms with CKD, such as impaired ammoniagenesis. Additional kidney transplant-specific factors seem to alter not only the prevalence but also the phenotype of MA, which typically shows features of renal ...

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 and α-Klotho Protein Are Associated with Adverse Clinical Outcomes in Non-Dialysis CKD Patients
Conclusions: In patients with CKD stages 1 –5, the combination of higher cFGF-23 and lower sKlotho levels along with mGFR and serum phosphate was associated with adverse clinical outcomes. The utility of combinations of traditional and novel biomarkers to predict outcomes warrants further study.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)
