Clinical Features of Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Hemodialysis Patients
Conclusions: Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection is common in hemodialysis patients, especially among patients with initial negative PCR that later seroconvert. Thus COVID-19 mortality in hemodialysis patients may be lower than previously estimated based on PCR tests alone.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Modification and Validation of the Phosphate Removal Model: A Multicenter Study
Conclusions: A new model was generated to quantify phosphate removal by 4-h HD and HDF with a dialyzer surface area of 1.3 –1.8 m2. This modified model would contribute to the evaluation of phosphate balance and individualized therapy of hyperphosphatemia.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

The Involvement of Chronic Kidney Disease and Acute Kidney Injury in Disease Severity and Mortality in Patients with COVID-19: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: In COVID-19 patients, CKD/AKI was associated with worse outcomes compared with those without CKD/AKI. AKI was associated with higher risks of severity and mortality than CKD.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Elevated Endostatin Expression Is Regulated by the pIgA Immune Complex and Associated with Disease Severity of IgA Nephropathy
Conclusion: Our study found that elevated endostatin expression was associated with disease severity and poor prognosis in patients with IgAN and can be upregulated by pIgA, but how it participates in the pathogenesis of IgAN deserves further exploration.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

The Challenging Management of Cancer: An Immunonephrologist ’s Perspective
Conclusion: As shown by these 3 example cases, nephrologists need to be open-minded with regard to kidney biopsy in order to get a timely diagnosis. Nephrologists also need to improve their knowledge of cancer biology and therapy in order to prevent kidney problems, manage therapy-related immune-mediated disorders, and improve patient life expectancy.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

IFIT Proteins Are Involved in CXCL10 Expression in Human Glomerular Endothelial Cells Treated with a Toll-Like Receptor 3 Agonist
Conclusion: IFIT1/2/3 and CXCL10 were induced by poly IC via IFN- β in GECs. IFIT1/2/3 may increase the expression of CXCL10 which induces lymphocyte chemotaxis and may inhibit the replication of infected viruses. These molecules may play a role in GEC innate immune reactions in response to viruses.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

How Do the Recent Major Randomized Controlled Trials Inform Best Use of the Novel Glucose-Lowering Agents?
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is frequently associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Some newer glucose-lowering agents confer both cardiac and kidney benefits, as supported by robust data from recent high-quality randomized controlled trials. The decision-making process when selecting glucose-lowering medications for T2DM now extends beyond glycaemia and metabolic effects, and towards additional benefits such as prevention of other complications.Summary: We review the evidence for efficacy in 3 new classes of medication for T2DM and additionally discuss rele...

A Polymorphism in the Gene Encoding the Insulin Receptor Binding Protein ENPP-1 Is Associated with Decreased Glomerular Filtration Rate in an Under-Investigated Indigenous African Population
Conclusion: The rs1044498 A allele was significantly associated with lower eGFR levels in a cohort of apparently healthy Black South Africans, through an unknown mechanism that was independent of insulin resistance. It is possible that the rs1044498 polymorphism affects kidney function by altering the role of ENPP-1 in endothelial wound healing, podocyte signalling, or oxidative stress. Thus, the presence of this polymorphism may predispose individuals to a greater risk of CKD even in the absence of diabetes.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Chronic Metabolic Acidosis in Chronic Kidney Disease
Conclusions:The most common cause of cMA is CKD. CKD-associated cMA most likely induces a negative protein balance; the exact role on bone metabolism remains uncertain. It presumably aggravates CKD progression. cMA control is recommendable; the serum bicarbonate target level should range around 24 mEq/L. Veverimer may be established as future option for cMA control; further systematic data are needed.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Overhydration Measured by Bioimpedance Spectroscopy and Urinary Serine Protease Activity Are Risk Factors for Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease
Conclusions: Our results corroborate that OH detected by bioimpedance spectroscopy in CKD patients is an independent risk factor for progression to ESRD in addition to GFR and albuminuria. Urinary serine protease activity is associated with OH and progression of CKD and provides a possible underlying mechanism.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)

Improved Renal Recovery with Eculizumab Therapy among Children with High Prevalence of Mutation-Associated Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Conclusions: Children who received eculizumab therapy showed good renal recovery and maintained remission compared with children who received plasma therapy alone. Genetic mutations were detected in 60% of the patients, which was associated with a high prevalence of consanguineous marriages.Kidney Blood Press Res (Source: Kidney and Blood Pressure Research)
