An Insight into Cholangiocarcinoma and Recent Advances in its Treatment
ConclusionBecause of its rarity and complexity, surgery remains the preferred treatment in resectable patients.  Howerver, the studies suggested that the recently reported drugs may have the potential to be an alternative option for the treatment of CCA and related complications. In addition, this review will certainly benefit the community and researcher for further investigation.Graphical abstract (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)

Colorectal Cancer Prevalence and Survival in Cuenca (Spain)
ConclusionColon cancer is a high-prevalence pathology, with adenocarcinoma being the most common histology. The results seem to indicate that it affects men more frequently, mortality rises with tumour stage at diagnosis and declines with use of chemotherapy. We present a study that could justify large-scale epidemiological studies for the regional surveillance and evolution of colorectal cancer in Spain. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)

EMT and Inflammation: Crossroads in HCC
AbstractHepatocellular carcinoma is one of the major causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide and is associated with several inflammatory mediators, since 90% of HCCs occur based on chronic hepatitis B or C, alcoholism or increasingly metabolic syndrome-associated inflammation. EMT is a physiological process, with coordinated changes in epithelial gene signatures and is regulated by multiple factors, including cytokines and growth factors such as TGF β, EGF, and FGF. Recent reports propose a strong association between EMT and inflammation, which is also correlated with tumor aggressiveness and poor outcomes. Cellular het...

Spindle Variant Primary Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma of the Colon: Case Report and  Literature Review
We present a case of an 82-year-old male patient with complaints of abdominal pain and swelling. He operated with the preliminary diagnosis of cecum tumor and ileum perforation. Tumoral proliferation was observed originating from the submucosa and infiltrating the muscularis propria, with the features of mostly spindle-shaped, having round-shaped nuclei in some of the cells, and having relatively narrow cytoplasm. A panel of immunohistochemical stains were performed to rule out the possibilities of sarcoma, carcinoma, or melanoma. Diffuse strong positive reaction was observed for CD45, CD20, CD19, CD22, Pax5, and CD30. The...

Comparative Outcomes of Second-line Topoisomerase-I Inhibitor Therapies on Neuroendocrine Carcinoma
ConclusionMany EP-NEC patients undergo second-line therapies. Interestingly, outcomes for ir/to-containing second-line therapies were not statistically different from other agents, regardless of the site of primary. With approval of new second-line therapies for small cell lung cancer, further research in therapeutic options is needed for this aggressive disease. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)

Small Bowel Adenocarcinoma: a Nationwide Population-Based Study
ConclusionsJejunal adenocarcinoma is more commonly associated with colorectal cancer, celiac disease, and Crohn ’s disease. They also had lower odds of requiring chemotherapeutic agents. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)

Anticancer Effect of Sargassum oligocystom Hydroalcoholic Extract Against SW742, HT-29, WiDr, and CT-26 Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines and Expression of P53 and APC Genes
ConclusionThese results indicated that the brown algaeS. oligocystom extract had significant antitumor effects against the SW742, HT-29, WiDr, and CT-26 CRC cell lines and especially CT-26, suggesting that it may be a potential candidate for further studies and therefore designing drugs of natural anticancer origin. TheS. oligocystom had an anticancer effect via an increase in the APC gene expression. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)

Association Between Helicobacter pylori and Periampullary and Pancreatic Cancer: a Case –Control Study
ConclusionThere was no association betweenH. pylori infection and Cag A seropositivity with periampullary and pancreatic cancers. The various tumour characteristics were also not associated withH. pylori infection. Thus, routine eradication ofH. pylori infection may not be recommended in periampullary and pancreatic cancers. Clinical Features and Survival of Young Adults with Stage IV Gastric Cancer: a Japanese Population-Based Study
ConclusionAge was an independent prognostic factor in patients with stage IV GC. Further studies investigating the genomic characteristics of GC and exploring more effective chemotherapeutic agents are required. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)

Results of Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma Resections: a Single-Center Analysis
ConclusionSurgical resection in ICC patients with underlying liver disease is associated with better prognosis than in incidentally detected ICC patients. Incidental ICC may be a different tumor with different biology, hence the high recurrence rates. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)

Evaluation of Human Wharton ’s Jelly-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Conditioning Medium (hWJ-MSCs-CM) or Scorpion Venom Breast Cancer Cell Line In Vitro
ConclusionApoptosis induction was both dose- and time-dependent for hWJ-MSCs-CM and ScV. According to the present study and other studies, there is an ample evidence that hWJ-MSCs-CM and the venom IC50 abolish tumor growth. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)

Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer: What We Learned in the Last Two Decades and the Future Perspectives
AbstractThe advancement in surgical techniques, optimization of systemic chemoradiotherapy, and development of refined diagnostic and imaging modalities have brought a phenomenal shift in the treatment of the locally advanced rectal cancer. Although each therapeutic option has shown substantial progress in their field, it is finding their ideal amalgamation which has baffled the clinician and researchers alike. In the effort to identifying the perfect salutary treatment plan, we have even shifted our attention from the trimodal approach to non-operative “watchful waiting” to more recent individualized care. In this art...

Changes in the Expression of Long Non-Coding RNA SDMGC and Its Target Gene, TRIM16, in Patients with Gastric Cancer
ConclusionIn conclusion, the results indicated an increase in the expression of SDMGC and a decline in the expression pattern of TRIM16 among the Iranian population. The results indicated a key tumor-accelerative function of SDMGC and a pivotal tumor-suppressing role of TRIM16 in GC patients. (Source: Journal of Gastrointestinal Cancer)
