Systematic review and network meta-analysis of the risk of Herpes zoster with biological therapies and selective Janus kinase-1 inhibitors in atopic dermatitis
CONCLUSIONS: JAK-1 inhibitors are associated with a significantly higher incidence of HZ compared to dupilumab and placebo. Our results suggest that recombinant HZ vaccination should be highly considered for all adult patients prior to starting oral JAK-1 inhibitors.PMID:38533363 | PMC:PMC10962383 | DOI:10.5114/ada.2023.135764 (Source: Herpes)

Effective vaccination strategies for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical cancer based on the mathematical model with a stochastic process
In this study, a mathematical model with stochastic processes was developed to analyze HPV transmission between genders and its subsequent impact on cervical cancer incidence. The model simulations suggest that both-gender vaccination is far more effective than female-only vaccination in preventing an increase in cervical cancer incidence. With increasing stochasticity, the difference between the number of patients in the vaccinated group and the number in the nonvaccinated group diminishes. To distinguish the patient population distribution of the vaccinated from the nonvaccinated, we calculated effect size (Cohen's dista...

Impact of Genital Infections and Antibiotic Use on Incidence of Preterm Birth: A Retrospective Observational Study
This study investigates the complex interplay among genital infections, antibiotic usage, and preterm birth. This study aims to identify common genital pathogens associated with preterm births, assess the impact of various antibiotic treatments on pregnancy outcomes, and understand antibiotic resistance patterns among these pathogens. This study included 71 pregnant women who experienced preterm birth and 94 women with genital infections who delivered at term. Various maternal characteristics, medical history, signs and symptoms, gestational weight, gestational age, type of birth, vaginal pH, Nugent scores, and vaginal flo...

Viral Infections, Are They a Trigger and Risk Factor of Alzheimer's Disease?
Pathogens. 2024 Mar 8;13(3):240. doi: 10.3390/pathogens13030240.ABSTRACTAlzheimer's Disease (AD), a progressive and debilitating condition, is reported to be the most common type of dementia, with at least 55 million people believed to be currently affected. Many causation hypotheses of AD exist, yet the intriguing link between viral infection and its possible contribution to the known etiology of AD has become an attractive focal point of research for the field and a challenging study task. In this review, we will explore the historical perspective and milestones that led the field to investigate the viral connection to A...

Function and Mechanism of Antiviral Wasp Venom Peptide Protopolybia-MP III and Its Derivatives against HSV-1
Toxins (Basel). 2024 Mar 4;16(3):132. doi: 10.3390/toxins16030132.ABSTRACTViruses are one of the leading causes of human disease, and many highly pathogenic viruses still have no specific treatment drugs. Therefore, producing new antiviral drugs is an urgent matter. In our study, we first found that the natural wasp venom peptide Protopolybia-MP III had a significant inhibitory effect on herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) replication in vitro by using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), Western blotting, and plaque-forming assays. Immunofluorescence analysis showed Protopolybia-MP III could enter cells, and it inhibited mu...

Associations between Different Antivirals and Hospital acquired Acute Kidney Injury in Adults with Herpes Zoster
CONCLUSIONS: Among antiviral therapies for herpes zoster, we found different risks of hospital acquired AKI among the patients receiving different antivirals, in particular, those administered intravenously. Among intravenous antivirals, acyclovir was associated with highest risk of hospital acquired AKI, followed by penciclovir/ganciclovir and foscarnet. Confirmation studies with large samples from other populations are warranted.PMID:38527975 | DOI:10.2215/CJN.0000000000000452 (Source: Herpes)

Infectious mononucleosis: new concepts in clinical presentation, epidemiology, and host response
Curr Opin Infect Dis. 2024 Mar 27. doi: 10.1097/QCO.0000000000001012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is an infectious disease that presents clinically in only a small percentage of individuals despite almost universal infection with the causative agent. Here, we review the latest concepts in the clinical presentation, epidemiology, and host response of this disease.RECENT FINDINGS: Several recently published papers/reviews describe IM as a condition caused by one of several etiologic agents including, cytomegalovirus (HHV-5), Roseola virus (HHV-6) and Toxoplasmosis amongs...

Varicella-Zoster Meningitis and Myelitis After Herpes Zoster Dermatitis Treatment With Amenamevir: A Case Series and Literature Review
In this report, we present four cases of VZV meningitis and myelitis following amenamevir treatment for HZ dermatitis with positive VZV DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three of them were considered immunocompromised hosts given the fact that two of these patients were taking immunosuppressive drugs for rheumatoid arthritis, and one patient had a history of sigmoid colon cancer (four months after resection). After HZ onset, amenamevir, which has poor CSF transfer, was prescribed for all the patients, and all of them developed central nervous complications by VZV (meningitis in t...

GPR41 and GPR43 regulate CD8(+) T cell priming during herpes simplex virus type 1 infection
In this study, we investigated the role of the G protein-coupled receptors (GPR)41 and GPR43 that can bind microbiota-derived short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in CD8+ T cell priming following epicutaneous herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection. We found that HSV-specific CD8+ T cells in GPR41/43-deficient mice were impaired in the antigen-elicited production of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), granzyme B and perforin, and failed to differentiate effectively into memory precursors. The defect in controlling HSV-1 at the site of infection could be restored when GPR41 and GPR43 were expr...

Neuralgia in the occipital region associated with ipsilateral trigeminal herpes zoster: Three case reports
DISCUSSION: The trigemino-cervical complex has the potential to cause neuralgia in the occipital region, as referred pain, caused by trigeminal herpes zoster. These cases suggest that, even if conjunctivitis or reddish spots appear to be trivial in the trigeminal nerve territory, trigeminal herpes zoster should be considered when neuralgia occurs in the ipsilateral occipital region.PMID:38525807 | DOI:10.1111/head.14698 (Source: Herpes)

Characteristics, management and outcome of Herpes Simplex and Varicella-Zoster virus encephalitis: a multicenter prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: HSVE and VZVE are distinct in clinical presentation, outcome, and prognostic factors. The impact of early ACV initiation was more apparent for HSVE than for VZVE, however, this could be due to VZVE smaller sample size and lower outcome rate leading to low statistical power, or due to potential distinct IE pathophysiology.PMID:38527616 | DOI:10.1016/j.cmi.2024.03.017 (Source: Herpes)
