Oncolytic herpes simplex virus expressing IL-2 controls glioblastoma growth and improves survival
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings illustrate that G47Δ-mIL2 is efficacious, stimulates antitumor immunity against orthotopic GBM, and may also target GSC. OHSV expressing IL-2 may represent an agent that merits further exploration in patients with GBM.PMID:38599661 | DOI:10.1136/jitc-2024-008880 (Source: Herpes)

Advances in the mechanism of inflammasomes activation in herpes virus infection
The objective of this review is to emphasize both the similarities and differences in the mechanisms of inflammatory activation among herpesviruses, elucidating their significance in diseases resulting from these viral infections.Additionally, it identifies areas requiring further research to comprehensively grasp the impact of this crucial innate immune signaling pathway on the pathogenesis of these prevalent viruses.PMID:38590522 | PMC:PMC10999540 | DOI:10.3389/fimmu.2024.1346878 (Source: Herpes)

Adherence to Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices in diabetes mellitus patients in Saudi Arabia: A multicenter retrospective study
CONCLUSION: In Saudi Arabia, patients with DM showed higher vaccination rates for annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccines compared to other vaccinations such as herpes zoster, Tdap, pneumococcal, and HPV. Factors such as vaccine recommendations provided by family physicians or specialists, the site of care, income level, DM-related hospitalization history, residency site, HbA1c level, and health sector type can significantly influence the vaccination rate in patients with DM.PMID:38591075 | PMC:PMC10999047 | DOI:10.4239/wjd.v15.i3.440 (Source: Herpes)

Dermatologic Reactions Following COVID-19 Vaccination: A Case Series
We describe 7 patients with various dermatologic reactions following COVID-19 vaccination, including herpes zoster (HZ) infection, herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO), herpes labialis, and urticaria. Although the reactions described here may be related to COVID-19 vaccination, continued vaccination is recommended, as it is the most effective way to protect against serious COVID-19 infection.PMID:38593110 | DOI:10.12788/cutis.0966 (Source: Herpes)

Janus kinase inhibitors and tumour necrosis factor inhibitors show a favourable safety profile and similar persistence in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and spondyloarthritis: real-world data from the BIOBADASER registry
CONCLUSIONS: Infections, herpes zoster and gastrointestinal adverse events in patients with RA tended to be more frequent with JAKi. However, prognosis was poor in patients receiving JAKi. Persistence was similar for TNFi and JAKi, although factors associated with discontinuation differed by diagnostic group.PMID:38594056 | DOI:10.1136/ard-2023-225271 (Source: Herpes)

Management of Herpes Zoster Infection Using a Combination of Allopathic and Herbal Medication: A Case Report
Cureus. 2024 Mar 7;16(3):e55705. doi: 10.7759/cureus.55705. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTHerpes zoster (HZ) also known as shingles is the reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) that causes chickenpox. It usually occurs in adults after remaining dormant in the dorsal root ganglia or ganglia of the cranial nerves for several years. It typically manifests as vesicle crops in a dermatomal or "zosteriform" pattern, which shows vesicle, ulcer, and scab distribution that is unilateral, clustered, and linear in a dermatome that is supplied by a single nerve. Patients usually experience prodromal symptoms of deep, severe achi...

Therapeutic prime/pull vaccination of HSV-2-infected guinea pigs with the ribonucleotide reductase 2 (RR2) protein and CXCL11 chemokine boosts antiviral local tissue-resident and effector memory CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells and protects against recurrent genital herpes
In this study, we used the strategy that involves immunization of herpes simplex virus type 2-infected guinea pigs using a recombinantly expressed herpes tegument protein-ribonucleotide reductase 2 (RR2; prime), followed by intravaginal treatment with the neurotropic adeno-associated virus type 8 expressing CXCL9, CXCL10, or CXCL11 T-cell-attracting chemokines to recruit T cells into the infected dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and vaginal mucosa (VM) (pull). We show that the RR2/CXCL11 prime-pull therapeutic vaccine strategy elicited a significant reduction in virus shedding in the vaginal mucosa and decreased the severity and ...

Narrative Review on the Use of Cladribine Tablets as Exit Therapy for Stable Elderly Patients with Multiple Sclerosis
Neurol Ther. 2024 Apr 8. doi: 10.1007/s40120-024-00603-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe number of ageing people with relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS) is increasing. The efficacy of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for RMS declines with age. Also, older persons with MS may be more susceptible to infections, hospitalisations and malignancy. Aging people with MS have higher rates of comorbidities versus aged-matched controls, increasing the individual risk of disability. We review the therapeutic properties of cladribine tablets (CladT) in ageing people with RMS, with regard to their utility for allowing these individ...

Bilateral Pattern Electroretinogram Abnormalities in Patients with Herpes Zoster Keratitis and Conjunctivitis
CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that VZV-affected eyes without central cornea involvement displayed reduced N95 amplitude and prolonged P50 peak time in bilateral eyes compared to the healthy controls. Larger studies are needed to further explore the effect of HZO on the electrophysiological response of the eye and the posterior segment.PMID:38587772 | DOI:10.1007/s40123-024-00928-9 (Source: Herpes)

Lack of functional TCR-epitope interaction is associated with herpes zoster through reduced downstream T cell activation
Cell Rep. 2024 Apr 7;43(4):114062. doi: 10.1016/j.celrep.2024.114062. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe role of T cell receptor (TCR) diversity in infectious disease susceptibility is not well understood. We use a systems immunology approach on three cohorts of herpes zoster (HZ) patients and controls to investigate whether TCR diversity against varicella-zoster virus (VZV) influences the risk of HZ. We show that CD4+ T cell TCR diversity against VZV glycoprotein E (gE) and immediate early 63 protein (IE63) after 1-week culture is more restricted in HZ patients. Single-cell RNA and TCR sequencing of VZV-specific T cells sh...
