Infectious mononucleosis: new concepts in clinical presentation, epidemiology, and host response
Curr Opin Infect Dis. 2024 Mar 27. doi: 10.1097/QCO.0000000000001012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is an infectious disease that presents clinically in only a small percentage of individuals despite almost universal infection with the causative agent. Here, we review the latest concepts in the clinical presentation, epidemiology, and host response of this disease.RECENT FINDINGS: Several recently published papers/reviews describe IM as a condition caused by one of several etiologic agents including, cytomegalovirus (HHV-5), Roseola virus (HHV-6) and Toxoplasmosis amongs...

Varicella-Zoster Meningitis and Myelitis After Herpes Zoster Dermatitis Treatment With Amenamevir: A Case Series and Literature Review
In this report, we present four cases of VZV meningitis and myelitis following amenamevir treatment for HZ dermatitis with positive VZV DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three of them were considered immunocompromised hosts given the fact that two of these patients were taking immunosuppressive drugs for rheumatoid arthritis, and one patient had a history of sigmoid colon cancer (four months after resection). After HZ onset, amenamevir, which has poor CSF transfer, was prescribed for all the patients, and all of them developed central nervous complications by VZV (meningitis in t...

GPR41 and GPR43 regulate CD8(+) T cell priming during herpes simplex virus type 1 infection
In this study, we investigated the role of the G protein-coupled receptors (GPR)41 and GPR43 that can bind microbiota-derived short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in CD8+ T cell priming following epicutaneous herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection. We found that HSV-specific CD8+ T cells in GPR41/43-deficient mice were impaired in the antigen-elicited production of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), granzyme B and perforin, and failed to differentiate effectively into memory precursors. The defect in controlling HSV-1 at the site of infection could be restored when GPR41 and GPR43 were expr...

Neuralgia in the occipital region associated with ipsilateral trigeminal herpes zoster: Three case reports
DISCUSSION: The trigemino-cervical complex has the potential to cause neuralgia in the occipital region, as referred pain, caused by trigeminal herpes zoster. These cases suggest that, even if conjunctivitis or reddish spots appear to be trivial in the trigeminal nerve territory, trigeminal herpes zoster should be considered when neuralgia occurs in the ipsilateral occipital region.PMID:38525807 | DOI:10.1111/head.14698 (Source: Herpes)

Characteristics, management and outcome of Herpes Simplex and Varicella-Zoster virus encephalitis: a multicenter prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: HSVE and VZVE are distinct in clinical presentation, outcome, and prognostic factors. The impact of early ACV initiation was more apparent for HSVE than for VZVE, however, this could be due to VZVE smaller sample size and lower outcome rate leading to low statistical power, or due to potential distinct IE pathophysiology.PMID:38527616 | DOI:10.1016/j.cmi.2024.03.017 (Source: Herpes)

Otologic disease trends in Japan post-COVID-19 outbreak: A retrospective time-series analysis
CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that COVID-19 and vaccinations had minimal discernible effects on hospitalization of patients with otologic diseases, suggesting that otologic diseases may not be significantly impacted by COVID-19 and vaccinations, which could have implications for public health policies and the allocation of healthcare resources during a pandemic. Further research and monitoring of long-term effects are warranted to validate these findings and guide healthcare decision-making.PMID:38522357 | DOI:10.1016/j.anl.2024.01.004 (Source: Herpes)

Efficient scar-free knock-ins of several kilobases in plants by engineered CRISPR/Cas endonucleases
Mol Plant. 2024 Mar 22:S1674-2052(24)00086-8. doi: 10.1016/j.molp.2024.03.013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn plants and mammals, non-homologous end-joining is the dominant pathway to repair DNA double strand breaks, making it challenging to generate knock-in events. We identified two groups of exonucleases from the Herpes Virus and the bacteriophage T7 families that conferred an up to 38-fold increase in HDR frequencies when fused to Cas9/Cas12a in a Tobacco mosaic virus-based transient assay in Nicotiana benthamiana. We achieved precise and scar-free insertion of several kilobases of DNA both in transient and stable tr...

Psychoeducational interventions for people living with chronic communicable disease: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: The findings of this review highlight potential benefits of psychoeducation but indicate more robust clinical trials will be required to examine their effectiveness and elucidate the mechanisms by which they best operate. Future interventions incorporating a broader focus on resilience enhancement and coping skills specific to stigmatisation could more comprehensively serve the needs of adults living with chronic communicable disease, particularly with HIV. The role of peer support in group psychoeducation merits further exploration.PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42021243058.PMID:38521523 | DOI:10.1136/bmjope...

UVB induced reactivation leads to HSV1 in the corneas of virtually all latently infected mice and requires STING to develop corneal disease
Sci Rep. 2024 Mar 21;14(1):6859. doi: 10.1038/s41598-024-52597-0.ABSTRACTReactivation of latent herpes simplex type 1 results in virus returning to the cornea leading to recurrent herpetic stromal keratitis (rHSK). We compare two competing models to reactivate viruses from latency, UV-B irradiation and cyclophosphamide (CP). Results revealed that while both result in corneal recrudescence, only UV-B irradiation results in rHSK. To better understand the dynamics of reactivation, we analyzed corneas for both the presence of infectious viruses and the dynamics of exposure to multiple reactivations using UV-B. We noted that mu...

Navigating diagnostic challenges: imaging strategies for herpes simplex encephalitis in resource limited settings: A case report
Radiol Case Rep. 2024 Mar 13;19(6):2183-2187. doi: 10.1016/j.radcr.2024.02.060. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTEncephalitis refers to the inflammatory condition affecting the brain parenchyma, leading to various neurological impairments. It can have various causes: infectious, postinfectious, and noninfectious origins. In this case, we present a 76-year-old man who presented to the emergency room with complaints of headache and behavioral changes. Initially, a Computed Tomography (CT) scan raised suspicion of herpes simplex encephalitis and prompted the initiation of treatment. Subsequently, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) ...

Expanded spectrum of varicella disease and the need for vaccination in India
Hum Vaccin Immunother. 2024 Dec 31;20(1):2328955. doi: 10.1080/21645515.2024.2328955. Epub 2024 Mar 22.ABSTRACTVaricella vaccine was first licensed in Japan and South Korea in 1989 for use in healthy children and was introduced in US in 1995. So far, 29 countries have adopted varicella vaccine in their universal immunization program (UIP). No Asian country, India included, has adopted the varicella vaccine as part of their UIP. The extra-cutaneous sites for VZV diseases are central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, the expanded disease spectrum includes vasculopathy, myelitis, inflammatory bowel disease, perforate...

Viral Anterior Uveitis: Differences in Retinal Vessel Area Density between the Affected and Non-Affected Eye Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography
CONCLUSION: We observed vascular dysfunction characterized by decreased macular and peripapillary VAD in the superficial plexus on OCTA in eyes with HSV- and VZV-positive VAU compared to non-affected fellow eyes. These changes might be an early sign of glaucomatous damage or may be a direct consequence of the herpes viruses themselves.PMID:38517389 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2329318 (Source: Herpes)
