Human in vivo evidence of associations between herpes simplex virus and cerebral amyloid-beta load in normal aging
CONCLUSIONS: All together, these results suggest that HSV infection is selectively related to cortical Aβ deposition in normal aging, supporting the inclusion of cognitively normal older adults in prospective trials of antimicrobial therapy aimed at decreasing the AD risk in the aging population.PMID:38570885 | DOI:10.1186/s13195-024-01437-4 (Source: Herpes)

Trajectories of intimate partner violence and their relationship to stress among young women in South Africa: An HPTN 068 study
CONCLUSIONS: Sustained IPV risk during adolescence was associated with elevated CRP in young adulthood. The relationship between IPV and elevated CMV was attenuated among those receiving a CT, suggesting that CTs could possibly reduce biological stress due to IPV.PMID:38563376 | DOI:10.1177/00207640241239535 (Source: Herpes)

Differential Contributions of Interferon Classes to Host Inflammatory Responses and Restricting Virus Progeny Production
J Proteome Res. 2024 Apr 2. doi: 10.1021/acs.jproteome.3c00826. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFundamental to mammalian intrinsic and innate immune defenses against pathogens is the production of Type I and Type II interferons, such as IFN-β and IFN-γ, respectively. The comparative effects of IFN classes on the cellular proteome, protein interactions, and virus restriction within cell types that differentially contribute to immune defenses are needed for understanding immune signaling. Here, a multilayered proteomic analysis, paired with biochemical and molecular virology assays, allows distinguishing host responses to IF...

Antiviral and synergistic effects of photo-energy with acyclovir on herpes simplex virus type 1 infection
Virology. 2024 Mar 31;595:110063. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2024.110063. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis experimental study aimed to evaluate the antiviral and synergistic effects of photoenergy irradiation on human herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1) infection. We assessed viral replication, plaque formation, and relevant viral gene expression to examine the antiviral and synergistic effects of blue light (BL) with acyclovir treatment. Our results showed that daily BL (10 J/cm2) irradiation inhibited plaque-forming ability and decreased viral copy numbers in HSV-1-infected monkey kidney epithelial Vero cells and primary hum...

Infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis of alveolar osteonecrosis following facial herpes zoster: a case report and literature review
CONCLUSIONS: The coexistence of bacterial and viral infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis of alveolar osteonecrosis following HZ. To our knowledge, we are the first to directly explore microbial pathogens in a case of postherpetic alveolar osteonecrosis through next-generation sequencing and bacterial culture. We recommend that oral examinations be carefully conducted for patients who are diagnosed with facial HZ, even if their facial rashes have faded away. We suggest that a prolonged and full-dose antiviral therapy course may be beneficial for the treatment of facial HZ with intraoral lesions. The impl...

Successful treatment with tofacitinib for anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 antibody-positive juvenile dermatomyositis: case reports and review of the literature
We describe two female Japanese patients with anti-MDA5 Ab + JDM and rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease who achieved remission by adding tofacitinib to existing immunosuppressive drugs and present a literature review. While both patients received various immunosuppressive or anti-inflammatory treatments for induction therapy, remission could not be achieved. Subsequently, tofacitinib was administered to reduce the Krebs von den Lungen-6 level 5 months after diagnosis in one patient; the other patient received tofacitinib 4 months after diagnosis to reduce ferritin levels and skin manifestations. Subsequently, bo...

Pain type and neuropathic pain components in acute herpes zoster
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the study found that over half of the patients with acute HZ experienced neuropathic pain, and this was more frequently observed in female patients. Analysis of different components of neuropathic pain showed significant differences in age, gender, and site distribution. The findings of this study may have important implications for the manage-ment and treatment of acute HZ.PMID:38558392 | DOI:10.14744/agri.2023.03743 (Source: Herpes)

Acute-Onset Lower Extremity Weakness and Urinary Retention in a Chronically Immunosuppressed Patient: Diagnosis and Management of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Myelitis
Cureus. 2024 Feb 29;16(2):e55248. doi: 10.7759/cureus.55248. eCollection 2024 Feb.ABSTRACTA 34-year-old immunosuppressed male presented with worsening bilateral lower extremity weakness and urinary retention accompanied by a painless clean-based chancre on his glans penis. Physical examination revealed symmetrically diminished lower extremity weakness most pronounced with hip flexion and knee extension and absent Achilles reflexes. Full MRI spine without contrast was noncontributory. Lumbar puncture showed elevated protein and total nucleated cells with lymphocytic predominance. Both CSF and serum polymerase chain reaction...

Eczema Herpeticum Complicating Atopic Dermatitis: A Rare Presentation
Cureus. 2024 Feb 28;16(2):e55171. doi: 10.7759/cureus.55171. eCollection 2024 Feb.ABSTRACTAtopic dermatitis (AD) has become a global health concern due to an increase in its frequency over the past few decades. This illness not only reduces the quality of life but also imposes a considerable financial burden due to the increased risk of skin infections. This case report explores the presentation of a four-month-old male infant with a personal history of atopic dermatitis that developed yellow scaly lesions on the scalp, which were assumed to be cradle cap. However, there was a clinical worsening of the cutaneous lesions, w...

Glucocorticoid receptor and specificity protein 1 (Sp1) or Sp3, but not the antibiotic Mithramycin A, stimulates human alphaherpesvirus 1 (HSV-1) replication
Antiviral Res. 2024 Mar 29:105870. doi: 10.1016/j.antiviral.2024.105870. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFollowing acute human alphaherpesvirus 1 (HSV-1) infection of oral-facial mucosal surfaces, sensory neurons in trigeminal ganglia (TG) are important sites for life-long latency. Neurons in the central nervous system, including brainstem, also harbor viral genomes during latency. Periodically, certain cellular stressors trigger reactivation from latency, which can lead to recurrent HSV-1 disease: herpes labialis, herpes stromal keratitis, and encephalitis for example. Activation of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) by stres...
