Comparison of the oncolytic activity of a replication-competent and a replication-deficient herpes simplex virus 1
Immunology. 2024 Mar 5. doi: 10.1111/imm.13775. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn 2015, the oncolytic herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) T-VEC (talimogene laherparepvec) was approved for intratumoral injection in non-resectable malignant melanoma. To determine whether viral replication is required for oncolytic activity, we compared replication-deficient HSV-1 d106S with replication-competent T-VEC. High infectious doses of HSV-1 d106S killed melanoma (n = 10), head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (n = 11), and chondrosarcoma cell lines (n = 2) significantly faster than T-VEC as measured by MTT metabolic activity, while low do...

Cytomegalovirus Colitis in a Patient with Severe Treatment Refractory Ulcerative Colitis
CONCLUSIONS: Despite our patient having multiple risk factors for developing CMV colitis, upadacitinib may have played a role when considering its known impact on the herpes family of viruses. CMV colitis should be evaluated for in any patient who presents with worsening symptoms without evidence of other infection or response to increase in therapy.PMID:38444641 | PMC:PMC10914341 | DOI:10.1093/crocol/otae014 (Source: Herpes)

A Multicenter Assessment of the Outcomes and Toxicities of Foscarnet for Treatment of Acyclovir-Resistant Mucocutaneous Herpes Simplex in Immunocompromised Patients
CONCLUSIONS: Among 31 episodes of HSV treated with foscarnet, only half resolved with treatment, and adverse events were common.PMID:38444818 | PMC:PMC10914364 | DOI:10.1093/ofid/ofae046 (Source: Herpes)

Herpetic Keratouveitis: Missed Diagnosis Leading to Corneal Perforation
We report a case of a 70-year-old female who presented with redness and painless blurry vision in her right eye and was treated with topical corticosteroid drops for presumed idiopathic anterior uveitis. Despite initial symptomatic improvement, she reattended with a significant deterioration in vision and was found to have a large corneal infiltrate and associated perforation. The perforation was sealed with corneal gluing, and she was treated for presumed herpetic anterior uveitis with oral acyclovir. Corneal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) specimen was positive for herpes simplex virus DNA. The perforation started to lea...

Assessment of the Level of Knowledge and Attitude Towards Herpes Zoster and Its Vaccination Among Individuals at Risk in Saudi Arabia
Conclusion Our study findings show that the general population of Saudi Arabia has inadequate knowledge about herpes zoster and its vaccine. For that reason, awareness and education programs targeting individuals at high risk of herpes zoster are required to enhance awareness and knowledge about herpes zoster and to improve their attitudes toward the herpes zoster vaccination.PMID:38445133 | PMC:PMC10914305 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.53572 (Source: Herpes)
