Dose-dependent increase in risk of bleeding and bleeding complications in relation to SSRI use at delivery
Psychiatric illness during pregnancy and postpartum depression are serious conditions. Suicide is the most common indirect cause of maternal death in England, and the second most common cause of death during the first year after delivery [1,2]. Women with current or prior psychiatric symptoms, such as anxiety disorder or depression, have limited ability to adjust to the overwhelming changes that pregnancy and delivery bring, thus putting them at greater risk [1]. There is an association between untreated depression or anxiety during pregnancy and unfavourable outcomes, such as low birth weight, preterm birth, and behaviour...

Low uptake of gynecological consultation following domestic or sexual violence: A case-control study during pregnancy follow-up
Violenceagainst women is a majorpublic healthproblem and a violation of human rights [1]. In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 27  % of women aged 15 to 49 had been victims of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, including 13 % in the previous year [2]. In a meta-analysis of 10 cross-sectional studies involving 8549 women, the prevalence of lifetime sexual violence was 31 %, with higher rates among pregnant wom en and women in developing countries [3]. Psychological, physical and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence, whoever the perpetrator, leads to serious shor...

The effects of taping in the management of primary dysmenorrhoea: A systematic review with meta-analysis
Dysmenorrhoea, commonly known as painful menstruation, affects most women of reproductive age. The intensity of this condition can sometimes equate to the severe pain experienced during renal colic, labour, or an ectopic pregnancy [1]. Research indicates that between 60 and 93  % of women experience menstrual pain, with 42 % suffering from severe levels [2]. Dysmenorrhoea itself causes a painful and often crampy or spasmodic sensation in the lower abdomen or suprapubic region [3–5]. Associated symptoms may include back pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, fa tigue, nervousness and dizziness, a collection of w...

European Association of Perinatal Medicine (EAPM), European Board and College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (EBCOG), European Midwives Association (EMA). Joint position statement: Substandard and disrespectful care in labour – because words matter
Substandard or disrespectful care during labour should be of serious concern for healthcare professionals, as it can affect one of the most important events in a woman ’s life. Substandard care refers to the use of interventions that are not considered best-practice, to the inadequate execution of interventions, to situations where best-practice interventions are withheld from patients, or there is lack of adequate informed consent. Disrespectful care refers to forms of verbal and non-verbal communication that affect patients’ dignity, individuality, privacy, intimacy, or personal beliefs. (Source: European Journal of ...

Previous mode of delivery and pregnancy outcomes after single euploid embryo transfer: A retrospective study
It is currently estimated that the global prevalence of caesarean section is approximately 21.1  % [1]. Epidemiological studies have shown a steady increase in the caesarean section rate of 19 % from 1990 to 2018, and estimates suggest that the projected rate will be approximately 28.5 % by 2030 [2]. The incidence of caesarean section is increasing for many reasons, most of which can be attributed to the advancing age of childbearing women [3]. Isolated fallopian tube torsion: A systematic review of case reports
Isolated fallopian tube torsion (IFTT) is a rare condition first described by Bland Sutton [1] in the 1890 ′s. Its incidence has been reported to be approximately 1 in 1.5 million women [2]. By definition, IFTT describes a condition in which there is rotation or twisting of the fallopian tube alone with no involvement of the ovary or its blood supply. Risk factors for placenta accreta spectrum in pregnancies conceived after frozen –thawed embryo transfer in a hormone replacement cycle
Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is defined as abnormal adhesion of the placenta to the uterine wall after delivery due to direct placental trophoblast invasion into the myometrium [1]. PAS is a serious and life-threatening complication in pregnancy that involves massive postpartum haemorrhage and often requires caesarean hysterectomy [2 –4]. Retained products of conception following delivery at ≥24 weeks of gestation occur mostly as a consequence of focal placenta accreta [5,6]. In developed countries, the prevalence of PAS has increased by approximately 10-fold over the last four decades [1,7]. (Source: European Journ...

A new course on assisted rotational birth and complex caesarean section – Mixed methods evaluation of Art & Craft
While up to a third of first-time mothers have an assisted vaginal birth [1], rates are falling worldwide [2], with increasing rates of second stage caesarean section (CS) with an estimated incidence of approximately 5  % [3]. The trend is likely multifactorial, with a decrease in trainee experience leading to reluctance in attempting assisted vaginal births perceived as difficult [4]. Indeed, malposition in the second stage of labour – occipito transverse or occipito posterior positions - affects up to 13 % of people, and is a major risk factor for adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes [5]. Perinatal and neonatal outcomes of high-risk asymptomatic women from a specialist preterm birth surveillance clinic
Preterm birth (PTB) is defined as birth before 37  weeks of gestation, and is the global leading cause of death in children less than five years old [1,2]. There has been minimal progress globally to reduce PTB rates over the last decade, and an estimated 9.9 % of all births occur prior to 37 weeks of gestation each year, encompassing 13.4 mi llion infants [3]. Advances in perinatal and neonatal intensive care, including the use of antenatal corticosteroids, exogenous surfactant and non-invasive ventilation, have improved infant survival rates at all gestational ages in high-income countries [4,5]. Uterine wound healing after caesarean section: A systematic review
Over recent years, the rate of caesarean section (CS) has increased considerably worldwide [1]. Indeed, the average CS rate increased by 19  % from 1990 to 2018, and is now 21 % [2]. Tissue suturing and healing have an important impact on subsequent mechanical resistance and strength of the uterus [3]. Uterine scarring has a prevalence of approximately 1 % [4,5], and is known to be the main risk factor for uterine rupture. This se riously increases fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality [5–7]. Obstetric risk factors for levator ani muscle avulsion: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Levator ani muscle (LAM) avulsion, defined as the detachment of the puborectalis muscle from its insertion at the pubic rami, mainly occurs during the first vaginal delivery [1] with an incidence of 10 –36 % [2–8]. This detachment can be unilateral or bilateral and either complete or partial with an associated loss of muscle bulk. It is a risk factor for pelvic floor organ prolapse and may have associated symptoms such as urinary incontinence, reduced vaginal sensation, vaginal laxity and an al incontinence [9–12]. The effect of chorionicity on maternal and neonatal outcomes in triplet pregnancies
Triplet gestation is challenging for both the mother and the physician. The human uterus is designed to support singleton gestations, however, in recent years with the introduction of assisted reproductive technologies we observe increasing numbers of multiple gestations. Triplet pregnancies are associated with increased maternal, fetal and neonatal complications compared to singleton and twin gestation, including a higher risk of gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders, cesarean delivery [1], fetal growth restriction, preterm birth and perinatal/neonatal death [2,3].
