Obstetric risk factors for levator ani muscle avulsion: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Levator ani muscle (LAM) avulsion, defined as the detachment of the puborectalis muscle from its insertion at the pubic rami, mainly occurs during the first vaginal delivery [1] with an incidence of 10 –36 % [2–8]. This detachment can be unilateral or bilateral and either complete or partial with an associated loss of muscle bulk. It is a risk factor for pelvic floor organ prolapse and may have associated symptoms such as urinary incontinence, reduced vaginal sensation, vaginal laxity and an al incontinence [9–12].
