Dose-dependent increase in risk of bleeding and bleeding complications in relation to SSRI use at delivery

Psychiatric illness during pregnancy and postpartum depression are serious conditions. Suicide is the most common indirect cause of maternal death in England, and the second most common cause of death during the first year after delivery [1,2]. Women with current or prior psychiatric symptoms, such as anxiety disorder or depression, have limited ability to adjust to the overwhelming changes that pregnancy and delivery bring, thus putting them at greater risk [1]. There is an association between untreated depression or anxiety during pregnancy and unfavourable outcomes, such as low birth weight, preterm birth, and behavioural problems as the child grows [3,4].
