Lying motivations: Exploring personality correlates of lying and motivations to lie.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 54(4), Oct 2022, 335-340; doi:10.1037/cbs0000328The present study examined relationships between lying motivations and HEXACO (honesty–humility, emotionality, extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, openness) personality traits. Participants (257 adults recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk) completed questionnaires measuring lying frequency, lying motivations, and HEXACO traits. Lying frequency was inversely correlated with honesty–humility and conscientiousness. The most common motivations for lying were for a...

A pilot study assessing effectiveness of a written shame induction protocol with and without a social evaluative threat manipulation.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 54(4), Oct 2022, 257-267; doi:10.1037/cbs0000325This pilot study was the first to evaluate the impact of a social evaluative threat (SET) manipulation on the shame induction effectiveness of a written shame protocol. We randomized seventy participants to three protocols (except n = 5 nonrandomized to control group): a written shame protocol where participants were told their response would be (a) read (shame protocol with SET manipulation [SET]; n = 25); or (b) immediately shredded (shame protocol without SET manipulation [No SET];...

Preliminary evidence for internal structure, sensitivity, and specificity of a brief PTSD and complex PTSD measure in adolescents.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(4), Oct 2023, 341-347; doi:10.1037/cbs0000322Early detection of trauma-related psychopathology is fundamental for preventing symptom escalation in adolescents, and this strategy can be carried out by developing accurate measures. The aim of this study is to provide preliminary evidence for the internal structure, construct validity, reliability, sensitivity, and specificity of a brief screening instrument for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (C-PTSD) in general population adolescents. 1,501 Chilean adolescen...

Canadian adolescents’ mental health and substance use during the COVID-19 pandemic: Associations with COVID-19 stressors.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(1), Jan 2023, 46-55; doi:10.1037/cbs0000305There have been significant concerns regarding the mental health impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to isolation, anxiety around the pandemic, and increased conflict in the home. The purpose of this study was to examine the rates of mental health symptoms of clinical concern and substance use, and to assess which COVID-19 related stressors were predictors of these symptoms and substance use in a large Canadian sample of adolescents, with comparisons across genders. Partic...

The scope, nature, and impact of sexual violence among students from a Canadian university: A random sample study.
We examined the scope, nature, and impact of SV in a large (N = 977) and diverse random sample of students from one Canadian university. We found that 23.2% of women, 9.6% of men, and 16.7% of nonbinary students reported experiencing SV at least once in the past 12 months. Roughly 6% of both women and men reported perpetrating SV at least once in the past 12 months, and no nonbinary participants reported any perpetration. The findings did not support a fall “red zone” of increased risk of rape and attempted rape for first- and second-year students. Women’s victimization did not vary by race, international student sta...

The investigation of biases in the evaluation and knowledge of foods’ healthiness and disordered eating in a community sample.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(1), Jan 2023, 14-22; doi:10.1037/cbs0000316Despite the proposal that biased perceptions of food may be contributing to disordered eating, investigations of the link between disordered eating and perceptions of foods’ “healthiness/unhealthiness” are scarce. The present studies (N Study 1 = 371; N Study 2 = 298) explored this link in a community sample by exploring cognitive biases previously associated with disordered eating, namely, dichotomous thinking, negative evaluations of foods, and biases in knowledge. In Study 1, p...

Associations between young adults’ social media addiction, relationship quality with parents, and internalizing problems: A path analysis model.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(1), Jan 2024, 61-69; doi:10.1037/cbs0000326The pervasiveness of social media in the lives of young adults raises concerns about the potential of problematic use. Social media addiction is likely to affect positive and negative aspects of the relationships quality with mothers and fathers but mechanisms explaining these associations remain unknown. Participants in this study (N = 435; Mage = 19.17; SD = 0.30) completed the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale and reported their symptoms of anxiety, depression, and the quality of t...

On the outside looking in: Social media intensity, social connection, and user well-being: The moderating role of passive social media use.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(3), Jul 2023, 240-252; doi:10.1037/cbs0000323Social media offers a nearly unlimited number of opportunities to bond with others. The present research, however, suggests that social media use can have both positive and negative implications for our well-being. Passive use of social media entails viewing others’ social media pages without interacting with the page owner. Across three studies, which included two survey-based studies and an experimental study, consistent results are found showing that passive social media use mode...

Stratégies d’acculturation et engagement paternel en contexte migratoire.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(4), Oct 2023, 292-299; doi:10.1037/cbs0000315Migration to Northern countries is becoming increasingly important. In this context, the acculturation strategies or profiles that immigrant fathers adopt play a major role in their adaptation to their new life, particularly in the quality of their relationship with their children. The present study aimed to describe the acculturation strategies of fathers who had recently immigrated to Quebec and their associations with their parental engagement. Using a quantitative research design,...

Validation du Questionnaire sur l’environnement sociopédagogique des élèves du primaire (QESPP).
This article represents the validation of the Questionnaire sur l’environnement sociopédagogique au primaire (QESPP). This questionnaire aims at documenting the perceptions of 6- to 12-year-old students regarding their classroom climate. It is an adapted version of a theoretical model and a questionnaire originally proposed by Janosz et al. (1998, 2007): Questionnaire sur l’environnement socioéducatif (QES). The content validation of the QESPP first led to focusing the measured content on the classroom environment and adapting it for accessibility to students aged 6–12. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analy...
