It follows! The relationship between perceived prior experienced coworker interpersonal mistreatment and newcomer employee social integration.
This article investigated whether and how the negative outcomes of perceived prior experienced coworker interpersonal mistreatment persist even when the targeted individual quits and joins a new organization. Drawing from the stressor–strain model, the perseverative cognition model of stress, and social exchange theory, we proposed that individuals’ rumination about perceived prior experienced coworker interpersonal mistreatment following turnover and up to entry into the new organization negatively impacts their mental health and ability to socially integrate into the new organization. We further posit that the negati...

Examining featural processing of emotional facial expressions: Is trait anxiety a factor?
Previous literature is largely inconsistent regarding how individuals with trait anxiety recognize emotional facial expressions, making this process poorly understood. For example, some research has found that individuals with high-trait anxiety demonstrate greater accuracy for the emotional facial expressions of fear while other studies have not observed such differences. Given more recent developments in the processing (i.e., featural and holistic) of emotional facial expressions, our goal for this study is to clarify the inconsistencies reported by previous research by examining featural and holistic processing during a...

Mind the age gap: A comprehensive examination of apathy, depression, and cognition in young adults.
We examined the relationship between apathy and depression with cognition in young adults (n = 96) from a bilingual university in Ontario. Participants completed measures of apathy, depression, executive function (EF), working memory (WM), autobiographical memory, neutral verbal memory, and memory for affective images. Apathy was present in 22% of the sample. Apathy in young adults was not related to performance in EF, WM, neutral memory, or memory for affective images after adjusting for depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms were also not related to neuropsychological performance. However, high levels of depressive sym...

The inclusion of immigrants in Canada: An examination of social markers of acceptance.
Although Canada is an immigrant-receiving nation, limited research has examined the key attributes that Canadian citizens consider important for immigrants to be accepted and included in the nation. According to the social markers of acceptance (SMA) framework, host citizens may require immigrants to demonstrate certain traits in order to consider and accept them as naturalized citizens. Correspondingly, requiring a low number of SMA from immigrants is an indication of inclusivity, whereas imposing more markers is a signal of exclusivity (Leong, International Journal of Intercultural Relations, 2014, 38, 120). The current ...

Association entre le temps d’écoute de la télévision et le rendement scolaire des enfants et des adolescents : Recension systématique et méta-analyse des études longitudinales réalisées à ce jour.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 54(4), Oct 2022, 304-314; doi:10.1037/cbs0000275Since the appearance of television, researchers have investigated its influence on the scholastic performance (SP) of young people. These studies have been divided between those that highlighted a negative relation and those that found listening to television had no relation to scholastic performance. Seeking to better document this issue, we conducted a systematic review and a meta-analysis of longitudinal research that evaluated the relation between time spent listening to televisio...

Does the early development instrument predict academic achievement in Ontario French schools?
This article pursues three research questions: (a) Does the EDI predict Grade 3 reading, writing, and math scores among Ontario French-language students? (b) Which EDI domains have the strongest effects? (c) Do any such patterns differ from those found among Ontario’s English-language schools? Data come from 2,696 students in Ontario French-language schools who started kindergarten between 2003/04 and 2005/06 and entered Grade 3 between 2006/07 and 2009/10. Multilevel regression models, controlling for individual- and school-level demographics, find that (a) almost all EDI domains were statistically significant predictor...

The role of harassment and group cohesion for depressive and anxiety symptoms.
Group cohesion is thought to be beneficial for the mental health of group members. However, this association could depend on whether the focus lies on one’s perceived personal relationship to other group members or on one’s perception of cohesion of the whole group. The association between higher perceived group cohesion of the whole group and improved mental health might decrease if individual group members are exposed to interpersonal mistreatment, such as harassment. Using γ regressions, we examined the interaction between perceived cohesion of the whole group and perceived harassment predicting depressive and anxi...

Posttraumatic growth and pain acceptance: A profile analysis of chronic pain experience.
A growing body of evidence suggests that the mindfulness process could facilitate posttraumatic growth (PTG). This positive psychological change is still understudied in the context of chronic pain. The aim of this cross-sectional study was (a) to provide typologies of people with chronic pain based on pain-related interference, inflexibility in pain, pain acceptance, and PTG, and (b) to examine if the identified profiles significantly differ on facets of dispositional mindfulness and health-related variables. A sample of 683 participants completed online questionnaires. A cluster analysis and mean score comparisons were c...

Exploration of the flourishing scale’s psychometric properties for French-Canadians and its relationship with HEXACO personality traits.
The flourishing scale (FS; Diener et al., 2010) is a short measure of well-being that has been shown to have good validity in many cultures and languages. In Canada, the validity of the original FS has been tested, but no study to date had tested the validity of the French version (Villieux et al., 2016) in a Canadian sample. Furthermore, the FS has often been linked to the Five-Factor Model of personality, but not to the newer HEXACO model. In the present study, 139 French-Canadian students completed the French FS, the HEXACO-60 personality inventory, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and the Satisfaction...
