L’influence des comportements interpersonnels des mentors sur la motivation des mentorés et leur expérience au travail : Une étude transversale et une étude prospective.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(4), Oct 2023, 261-272; doi:10.1037/cbs0000366Mentoring is an effective way to help employees improve their skills, strengthen their relationships, and promote learning in the workplace. However, studies indicate that mentoring can also be harmful or ineffective for some mentees, particularly due to mentors ’ interpersonal behaviors. Two studies with complementary designs were conducted: one with a cross-sectional approach (N = 226) and a second with a prospective approach (N = 278). Both studies aimed to examine the effect of ...

Reducing racial bias and lethal force among Canadian police officers: Concrete recommendations for change.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(2), Apr 2023, 153-160; doi:10.1037/cbs0000364Population data reveal that Black individuals are more often arrested, charged, shot, and killed by police in Canada than White individuals. Given the traumatic effects of police lethal force, there are urgent calls to understand the potential causes of observed racial disparities and develop interventions to effectively reduce lethal force errors overall, especially among disproportionately affected communities. Expanding on prior lab-based studies, Andersen et al. (see record 2021-7...

Goal disengagement and goal reengagement: Associations with depression, anxiety, and satisfaction with life.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(2), Apr 2024, 93-101; doi:10.1037/cbs0000360Goal adjustment is an important mechanism of self-construction. When pursuing goals, people are sometimes confronted with situations in which goals are unreachable and they need to adjust by disengaging from them and reengaging in alternative goals. A growing literature suggests that people’s capacity to adjust when confronted with unattainable goals is associated with subjective well-being. The main purpose of this study was to examine whether goal disengagement, goal reengagement, ...

Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(2), Apr 2024, 168-173; doi:10.1037/cbs0000358The goal of this study was to explore workers’ profiles according to the fluidity of their boundary between work and nonwork roles, their motivation at work, and their well-being. Validation of the French–Canadian version of the COVID-19 Peritraumatic Distress Index with parents of an infant.
This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the French–Canadian version of the CPDI (F-CPDI) in a sample of 492 parents (58% of mothers) of an infant in Quebec Province (Canada). The factor structure, internal consistency, and convergent validity of the instrument were tested. Results indicate that the F-CPDI has good internal consistency and supports the four-factor structure proposed by the authors of the original instrument. Results of correlation analyses indicated that peritraumatic distress was related to increased psychological distress, postpartum depression, and lower life satisfaction. Results ind...

Performative shooting exercises do not predict real-world racial bias in police officers.

Personality, political ideology, and partisanship in Canada.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(2), Apr 2024, 81-92; doi:10.1037/cbs0000355Personality traits reliably predict political ideology and partisanship around the world, but studies investigating these relationships among Canadians used less-than-ideal measures of personality or did not examine the contribution of antagonistic personality traits (i.e., psychopathy, narcissism, Machiavellianism). We surveyed Canadians (N = 2,551) on their ideological self-placement and political partisanship using full measures of HEXACO traits and antagonistic traits. The findings ...

Interpreting teasing through texting: The role of emoji, initialisms, relationships, and rejection sensitivity in ambiguous SMS.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(1), Jan 2024, 41-50; doi:10.1037/cbs0000349Teasing, a common form of communication that involves ambiguity, is rendered more ambiguous through text messaging as the communicative markers that signal intent are restricted compared to face-to-face interaction. Although texting makes the ambiguity of teasing more prominent, nevertheless, there are elements of communication through texting that impact the interpretation of teasing texts, including message features (Study 1: the “lol” initialism and the “winking face with tongu...

Au-delà de la confrontation à la maladie d’un proche : Santé et bien-être des jeunes adultes aidants étudiants.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(4), Oct 2023, 285-291; doi:10.1037/cbs0000352The literature on family support has focused on adult caregivers and, more recently, on young caregivers. However, the issue of young adult caregivers (YACs; 18-25 years old) remains largely unexplored. A large majority of these young adults are students. In a higher education setting, this research aimed to distinguish YACs from young adults dealing with an ill loved one and young adults not having to deal with an ill loved one to explore their health and wellbeing. The sample consis...

A short version of the Opening Minds Scale–Workplace Attitudes: Factor structure and factorial validity in a sample of Canadian public safety personnel.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(2), Apr 2024, 157-162; doi:10.1037/cbs0000350Public safety personnel (PSP) are frequently exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTE). Frequent exposure to PPTE is associated with a high prevalence of mental health symptom reporting among PSP, and stigma is associated with lower rates of intended mental health service use for PSP. A valid and expedient measure of stigma could provide mental health professionals with an instrument that could potentially improve mental health outcomes. The Opening Minds Scale–...

Évolution des catégories de symptômes de dépressifs au cours de l’adolescence et de l’émergence de l’âge adulte et étude des différences entre étudiants au postsecondaire et non-étudiants.
The objectives of this study are as follows: 1) Describe the longitudinal trajectories of three depressive symptoms subtypes: (i.e., cognitive, affective, and somatic) between the ages of 11 to 19 and 2) evaluate differences between students and non-students on the subtypes of depressive symptoms between the ages of 17 and 19. To this end, 499 students completed annual surveys between the ages of 11 and 19, and symptoms were measured using Beck’s Depression Inventory, 2nd edition (Beck et al., 1996). The typology used to assess the types of symptoms is that proposed by Beck et al. (2002). Affective and somatic symptoms i...

Proof of concept for a multimethod approach to evaluate the usability of websites with public health content: The case of Alzheimer association websites.
In this study, we provide proof-of-concept for the new, combined use of these three types of measures within a quasi-experimental paradigm focused on a question relevant to public health. The quasi-experiment specifically involved assessing the usability of four English-language Alzheimer websites from around the world (USA, U.K., Ireland, Canada), all of which contained information about cognitive health. Participants completed two tasks; one requiring them to identify strategies to prevent dementia and another requiring them to locate a definition of Alzheimer’s disease. We hypothesized that the websites would have sup...
