Young workers’ motivation to adopt safe behaviour: French validation of the Self-Determined Safety Motivation Scale.
The adoption of safe work behaviour is largely related to workers’ motivation toward safety. Assessment of young French workers’ motivation toward safety is a challenge since no validated tool exists. The aim of this study was to translate into French the Self-Determined Safety Motivation Scale (SDSMS). Steps of parallel translation, against-translation, and pretest were conducted, prior to the administration to 225 participants. Results of exploratory factor analyses supported a five-factor structure, and confirmatory factor analyses suggested the questionnaire is in line with the Self-Determination Theory. However, r...

Énaction et intervention en psychologie du sport chez les sportifs élites et en formation.
This article describes the potential contribution of enactive approaches in sport psychology and, more specifically, the psychological support of elite athletes and those in training. Firstly, theoretical hypotheses of enaction are defined and illustrated with research conducted in sport psychology. Then, methodological and practical principles of an enactive intervention with elite athletes are presented. Three enactive interventions are explained and illustrated by examples taken from acrobatic sports, athletics and a team sport: (a) the athlete examines his own enactions; (b) the enactions are tested; (c) the developmen...

Is there something beyond stages of change in the transtheoretical model? The state of art for physical activity.
Over the past 30 years, there has been a growing interest in the application of the transtheoretical model (TTM) in the domain of physical activity (PA). Even though this model has been widely used to implement PA interventions, most of these interventions have not used all of the TTM’s theoretical constructs. Indeed, several studies focused exclusively on the stages of change although this construct is only descriptive. Thus, in the present review, we wanted to encourage researchers to go beyond stages of change when they use the TTM. To do so, we aimed to provide an overview of the TTM, its constructs and to present on...

The cultural shaping of career aspirations: Acculturation and Chinese biculturals’ career identity styles.
Choosing one’s occupation is an important life decision for young adults. This decision may be particularly complicated for biculturals who have access to two potentially conflicting sets of career-related cultural norms. The present study examined the role of both mainstream and heritage acculturations in the context of career decisions, for a sample of bicultural Chinese emerging adults in Canada (N = 194). Results first verified the validity of a modified measure of Berzonsky’s (1989) identity processing styles in the career domain. Path analysis supported our proposed model and showed that Canadian acculturation pr...

Marijuana trajectories in Canadian youth: Associations with substance use and mental health.
We differentiated marijuana-use trajectories in a large cohort of Canadian youth and compared the use of other substances, mental health symptoms, and behavioural problems for each of the identified trajectories at their baselines in adolescence (ages 12 to 18) and their endpoints (ages 22 to 29). Data came from the Victoria Healthy Youth Survey, a 10-year prospective study of a random community sample of 662 participants in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (48% male; Mage = 15.5). Canadian youth were followed biennially for six assessments from 2003 to 2013. Five distinct marijuana-use classes were identified using late...

Validation of the French Canadian version of the brief Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 10).
Despite wide interest in the concept of resilience and its relevance to the study of a number of health issues, surprisingly few measures are available to assess the construct. This investigation was conducted to examine the psychometric properties of the French Canadian brief version of the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 10; Campbell-Sills & Stein, 2007; Connor & Davidson, 2003). A sample of 784 college women completed the CD-RISC 10 and a series of questionnaires. Validity indices included the Personal Mastery Scale, the 5-item World Health Organization Well-Being Scale, the Major Depression Inventory and se...

Anger and anger regulation among adolescents: A consideration of sex and age differences.
Although adolescents often struggle to regulate their anger, few studies have examined anger regulation within the period of adolescence. In view of this, this study explored potential sex and age differences in anger experience, expressions, and control among Grades 8–12 adolescents (n = 766) in Western Canada. Anger regulation was evaluated by the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory. Three separate multivariate analyses of variance and post hoc tests were performed. Results revealed that Grade 12 students experienced more anger than Grade 8 students. Furthermore, Grades 10–12 students engaged in greater levels of ...

Advancements to the understanding of expert visual anticipation skill in striking sports.
This article reviews the empirical literature on expert visual anticipation in striking sports since 2012 to determine if it has contributed to advancement of a theoretical model. First, methodologies used to study visual anticipation are briefly described. Second, an existing model is outlined to present what is known about the theoretical underpinning of expert visual anticipation. Third, empirical evidence of key factors that contribute to expert visual anticipation are discussed. Moreover, whether anticipation skill can be improved and transferred to different contexts is discussed. The review identifies that there are...

Vérification des propriétés psychométriques de l’Échelle des besoins psychologiques fondamentaux en sport auprès d’adultes inscrits à des programmes d’activité physique de groupe.
The use of robust measuring instruments makes it possible to obtain quality data and to ensure reliable results. However, many research projects face serious limits related to the psychometric properties of their measurement instruments. A critical analysis of instruments based on the self-determination theory for measuring basic psychological needs in physical activity sciences leads to the conclusion that the psychometric properties of those instruments are unstable and vary depending on context and population. The general objective of this article is to examine the psychometric properties of the Basic Needs Satisfaction...

Examination of the validity and reliability of the French version of the Brief Self-Control Scale.
This study aims to develop and to validate a French version of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS; Tangney, Baumeister, & Boone, 2004). This instrument is usually applied as a unidimensional self-report measure for assessing trait self-control, which captures one’s dispositional ability to resist short-term temptation to reach more valuable long-term goals. Data were collected from 2 independent samples of French-speaking individuals (n1 = 287; n2 = 160). Results indicated that the French version of the BSCS can be treated as unidimensional, like the original questionnaire. Data also showed consistent acceptable reliabil...

Un nouveau modèle d’engagement conjugal: Validation du Questionnaire multimodal d’engagement conjugal.
Three studies were conducted to develop and validate the new multimodal couple commitment questionnaire (MCCQ). Study 1 led to the creation and evaluation of the factor structure of the first version in 45 items of the questionnaire, with a sample of 139 adults. In Study 2, exploratory factor analyses among 317 adults from the community helped to reduce the number of items in the questionnaire. In Study 3, confirmatory factor analysis was used within a broad sample of 797 adults to demonstrate the psychometric qualities of the Questionnaire in 27 items. The results showed that MCCQ is a promising measure of optimal commitm...

L’effet du stress perçu sur les comportements d’absentéisme et de présentéisme: Le rôle médiateur de l’état de santé.
This study aims to better understand the reasons that lead workers to come to work when ill or be absent from it. More specifically, this research studies the role of perceived stress and health on attendance behaviours (i.e., presenteeism and absenteeism) of employees. Data were collected from employees working in 2 distinct higher education institutions in Quebec. The results show that employees who come to work sick (i.e., presenteeism), also tend to report more days of absence (due to illness). The results also show that employees perceiving higher level of stress report more presenteeism, and also tend to be more abse...

Judicial discussion of eyewitness identification evidence.
To safeguard against unreliable eyewitness evidence in court, judges must be aware of recommendations put forth by empirical researchers and legal inquiries (such as the Sophonow Inquiry; Cory, 2001). However, we do not know how judges weigh and assess the reliability of eyewitness identification evidence in their decisions. 247 full-text reports of Canadian judicial trial and appeal decisions from 1980 to 2016 involving a discussion of eyewitness identification evidence were coded for key system (e.g., lineup administration) and estimator variables (e.g., experiencing trauma) known to impact eyewitness reliability. Judici...

Séparer les filles et les garçons dans les classes d’éducation physique et sportive : État de la question.
The objective of this review of the literature is to present a summary of current knowledge about the effect of mixed or non-mixed groups on the training of students, the process of acquiring motor skills, and, at a more general level, the developing of femininity and masculinity in PSE. The article deals with the difficulties posed by mixed groups in PSE, describes numerous inequities between the sexes and the issues that are particular to a context of non-mixed teaching. This is followed by a status report on the work carried out on non-mixed groups in PSE. Finally, due to the limited number of studies on the subject, as...

National identity and public attitudes toward multiculturalism in Canada: Testing the indirect effect via perceived collective threat.
This article integrates research on national identity and collective threat to examine how these 2 factors jointly contribute to the formation of multicultural ideology in Canada. Specifically, this article argues that ethnic and civic forms of national identity are associated with levels of perceived collective threat, thereby indirectly affecting multicultural attitudes (national identity → collective threat → multicultural attitudes). Results of structural equation modeling analyses indicated that (a) ethnic national identity is positively, and civic national identity is negatively, associated with collective threat...
