La polyvictimisation et la détresse psychologique comme médiateurs de la fugue chez les jeunes de minorités sexuelles.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(4), Oct 2023, 273-284; doi:10.1037/cbs0000351Sexual minority youth, i.e., lesbians, gays, bisexuals, queers or questioning, are more likely to run away than heterosexual youth. The minority stress model is used to examine the role of polyvictimization and psychological distress in the relationship between sexual minority status and running away from home. The study is based on a secondary analysis of the Youths’ Romantic Relationships Survey. Moderate serial mediation was applied to a probability sample of 7,731 Quebec student...

Evaluation of Know Before You Go on mental health literacy and life skills to prepare for life after high school.
This study aims to understand whether a blended mental health literacy and life skills programme Know Before You Go (KBYG) will improve students’ knowledge about mental health, develop the life skills needed for postsecondary life, and reduce perceived stress. One hundred sixty-eight Grade 12 students completed anonymous surveys on mental health knowledge, life skills, and perceived stress before receiving KBYG from teachers using the Teacher Guide, after the session, and 1 month later. Paired-samples t tests and analysis of covariance were conducted using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) at the signifi...

Exploratory study of the role of outgroup emotional display on anger and emergency intentional helping behaviour in an immersive virtual environment.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(2), Apr 2024, 113-121; doi:10.1037/cbs0000344This exploratory research experimentally investigated whether following an illegitimate defeat, emotions demonstrated by outgroup fans (expressive/inexpressive) could affect individual anger and then prompt greater prosocial behaviour (i.e., intergroup help). More specifically, it was postulated that expressive/inexpressive outgroup emotion would first increase/decrease individual anger following an illegitimate defeat and that anger would explain the variability of helping behaviours...

In action at work! Mental health self-management strategies for employees experiencing anxiety or depressive symptoms.
This study aims to identify the self-management strategies used by these workers to promote their functioning at work. Semistructured interviews were conducted with workers presenting symptoms of anxiety or depression (n = 25). A total of 54 self-management strategies that emerged from thematic analysis were grouped into three main categories: behavioural (managing tasks, worktime, workspace, and relationships; managing boundaries between work and personal life; using time off work to recover energy; taking care of one’s physical health and seeking social support), cognitive (practicing self-compassion; managing negative...

No man is an island: Associations between adherence to traditional masculine norms and young men’s psychosocial adjustment.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(1), Jan 2023, 56-67; doi:10.1037/cbs0000345Traditional masculinity regulates men’s psychosocial adjustment in both adaptive and maladaptive ways. The aims of this study were twofold. First, we evaluated the conceptual distinctiveness between measures of adherence to masculinity: “other-oriented” (e.g., “A man should never admit when others hurt his feelings”) versus “self-oriented” (e.g., “I tend to keep my feelings to myself”). Second, we determined how self- and other-oriented adherence to two masculine norms...

Exploring the impact of shame and guilt on coping with gambling problems among emerging adult gamblers.
This study explores the interrelationships of problem gambling, feelings of shame and guilt, and the use of avoidant and nonavoidant coping strategies among a sample of emerging adult gamblers (N = 391) from the University of Manitoba. Exploratory factor analysis was used to assess the factor structure of the Coping With Gambling Loss (CWGL) measure, then observed path models were used to test three hypotheses regarding shame and guilt’s determination of coping with gambling loss. Factor analysis produced a five-factor solution, which opposes the six-factor solution found in previous work. Problem gambling was measured b...

Which comes first? Associations between communication patterns and relationship satisfaction in couples over a 1-year period.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(1), Jan 2024, 70-80; doi:10.1037/cbs0000342Feeling satisfied in our relationship and communicating effectively with a partner are both important for people involved in a romantic relationship and clinicians working with these couples. Thus, decades of research have been dedicated to understanding how communication influences relationship satisfaction, but only a few looked at how satisfaction may impact communication. The present study aimed to examine the bidirectional associations between communication patterns and relationshi...

Validation of an adolescent version of the Parental Metaemotion Philosophy Scale.
This study evaluated the validity and reliability of the Parental Metaemotion Philosophy Scale–Adolescent version (PMEPS-Adolescent), a 21-item measure that assessed adolescents’ perceptions of their parents’ metaemotion. The sample consisted of 241 middle school students in China. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to validate this new scale. This four-factor model evidenced good model fit and internal consistency. Support was also found for its criterion validity as shown in their prediction of life satisfaction and mental health. Results indicated that the PMEPS-Adolescent was a research tool with high validity...

False impressions? The effect of language proficiency on cues, perceptions, and lie detection.
We examined how observers’ impressions of nonnative speakers and their cues to deception affected decision-making. Native and nonnative English speakers lied or told the truth about having committed a transgression, and then observers attempted to detect their lies. Observers were better able to discriminate between lie- and truth-telling native speakers than nonnative speakers. They also held more positive impressions of native speakers than nonnative speakers. Unlike observers, trained coders identified a multitude of differences in interviewees’ presentation of cues to deception across proficiency groups. Overall, n...

The effectiveness of knowledge mobilization on parent emotion beliefs is moderated by parent gender, dysregulation, and family expressiveness.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(1), Jan 2024, 1-9; doi:10.1037/cbs0000338We tested the effectiveness of mobilizing research findings from a study on parental beliefs about gender and emotion directly to parent stakeholders and examined parent gender, parent emotion dysregulation, and family expressiveness as moderators of belief change pre-to-post knowledge mobilization. A sample of 936 parents of children aged 8–12 completed measures about gendered emotion beliefs, emotion dysregulation, and family expressiveness and was then randomized to watch either a sh...

Does menu labelling influence food choice and consumption in female undergraduate students?
This study aimed to examine the impact of calorie labels on food choice and consumption as well as the moderating role of disordered eating on these outcomes. Participants were 59 female undergraduate students from a large Canadian university. Participants had their height and weight measured, completed self-report questionnaires assessing food preferences, disordered eating, and physiological states, and selected a snack item to consume from a menu that either included or did not include calorie labels. Participants’ food intake was measured by weighing the food item prior to and after consumption. There were no signifi...

Disordered gaming: The role of a gamer’s distress profile.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(2), Apr 2024, 122-132; doi:10.1037/cbs0000335Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) embodies a persistent and recurrent engagement with video games, to the exclusion of other activities, that cannot be controlled, and with significant impairments in everyday functioning. Previous research suggests that IGD is experienced differently depending on the gamer’s profile, while distress symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and stress have been independently associated to the development of IGD. Interestingly, no study to date has aimed to ...

L’impact des symptômes de photosensibilité sur la qualité de vie des personnes atteintes d’un traumatisme craniocérébral modéré à grave : Une étude qualitative.
This study aims to understand the subjective impact of photosensitivity on the quality of life of individuals who have had moderate to severe TBI. An exploratory qualitative approach was used to explore the narratives of 8 photosensitive MTBI adults through semi-structured interviews. The impairments included physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects and were related to photosensitivity and awareness of the full impact of their injury. The amalgam of functional status change and its effects, and the mourning of the former identity, resulted in a change in valued roles. These findings document the photosensitivity experien...

A longitudinal study on the stability and predictors of flourishing among emerging adults.
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 55(3), Jul 2023, 210-219; doi:10.1037/cbs0000327Flourishing is a concept that combines hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. Flourishing is advantageous for both individuals themselves and the society in which they live. The present study analyses the stability, predictors and correlates of flourishing during the initial years of emerging adulthood, along with gender differences. The sample comprised 400 emerging adults (268 women) who completed a questionnaire at two time points: Wave 1 (Mage = 20.31; SD = 2.04) and (3 years later) w...
