Expression of circular RNA has-circ-0009158 and identification of associated miRNA-mRNA network in hepatocellular carcinoma
This study explored the expression and associated miRNA-mRNA network of has-circ-0009158 in HCC. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to measure the expression of hsa-circ-0009158 in the HCC tissues of 143 patients and four human HCC cell lines. Then, the potential relationship of hsa-circ-0009158 expression with clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients was analyzed using the GO and KEGG databases. Correlated miRNA-mRNA networks were forecasted using the TCGA database and Cytoscape software. The hsa-circ-0009158 expression was significantly upregulated in HCC tissues and cell lines (P<0.00...

Dysregulation of kidney proteases in the pathogenesis of hypertension following unilateral nephrectomy in juvenile mice
CONCLUSION: UNX results in the development of persistent and progressive hypertension. Down-regulation of KLK1 and up-regulation of various cathepsins may contribute to the development of hypertension via multiple mechanisms including a decrease in nitric oxide (NO) production.PMID:38463588 | PMC:PMC10918144 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)

Screening sensibility and antifungal activity after topical application of a synthetic lactoferrin-derived antimicrobial peptide
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed a positive therapeutic effect of a commercial product containing hLF1-11 in the case of 88.9% of the patients with onychomycosis. The present formulation of hLF1-11 into PBS is stable enough to permit storage at room temperature for at least two years.PMID:38463589 | PMC:PMC10918136 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)

Complex phenotypic heterogeneity of combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma with a homogenous < em > TERT < /em > promoter mutation
Am J Transl Res. 2024 Feb 25;16(2):690-699. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTTo clarify the mechanism underlying the development and poor prognosis of combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA), we characterized liver cancer driver mutations and poor prognostic markers in both the HCC and intrahepatic CCA (iCCA) components of a cHCC-CCA tumor. The telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter mutation C228T was quantified by digital polymerase chain reaction using DNA from multiple microdissected cancer components of a single cHCC-CCA nodule. The protein expression of cancer-related markers, including TERT, was exami...

IL-1RA autoantibodies: insights into mechanisms and associated diseases
Am J Transl Res. 2024 Feb 15;16(2):374-386. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTThe association of neutralizing autoantibodies targeting interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) with multisystem inflammatory syndrome, IgG4-related disease, and vaccine-related myocarditis is increasingly recognized. The detection of IL-1RA autoantibodies can be notably affected by the techniques and methods employed. Two categories of assays are available: solid-phase immunoassays, which detect binding of IL-1RA autoantibodies, and functional IL-1 signaling reporter cell assays, which offer greater specificity by determining whether circulating auto...

Monoclonal neutralizing antibodies against SARS-COV-2 S protein
Am J Transl Res. 2024 Feb 15;16(2):681-689. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTNovel coronavirus pneumonia, also known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is caused by sub-severe acute respiratory syndrome type 2 coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The spike (S) protein of SARS-CoV-2 binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors widely expressed on the surface of human cells leading to life-threatening respiratory infections. A serious hazard to human health is posed by the lack of particular treatment medications for this virus infection. We advocate the creation of high-affinity antibodies using the receptor bindin...

Changes in serum inflammatory factors after hip arthroplasty and analysis of risk factors for prosthesis loosening
CONCLUSION: Serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were significantly elevated in patients with postoperative prosthesis loosening. Osteoporosis, postoperative infection, and inflammatory cytokines are independent risk factors for prosthesis loosening. The predictive model we established through machine learning can effectively determine the risk of prosthesis loosening. Monitoring inflammatory cytokines and postoperative infections, combined with prevention of osteoporosis, can help reduce the risk of prosthesis loosening.PMID:38463599 | PMC:PMC10918134 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)
