Genotype analysis of 55,281 cases of thalassemia in northern Guangxi
CONCLUSION: The population in northern Guangxi exhibited rich ethnic diversity, with high allelic carrying rates among the Zhuang, Yao and Dong ethnic groups. Thalassemia gene mutations are diverse, encompassing a variety of gene types, with α thalassemia predominating, notably the --SEA/αα gene type. The prevalence of intermedia or severe types of thalassemia is not low, but there are still some carriers of thalassemia in people who are initially tested negative.PMID:38322564 | PMC:PMC10839378 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)

Relationship between anion gap and in-hospital mortality in intensive care patients with liver failure: a retrospective propensity score matching analysis
CONCLUSIONS: AG is associated with in-hospital mortality in intensive care patients with liver failure and demonstrates a moderate predictive value, which is comparable to the predictive power of the MELD score. AG may serve as an indirect marker of in-hospital mortality of patients with liver failure by reflecting the degree of metabolic acidosis.PMID:38322565 | PMC:PMC10839379 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)

Music combined with dexmedetomidine relieves preoperative anxiety and promotes postoperative recovery in patients undergoing gynecologic laparoscopic surgery: a randomized clinical trial
CONCLUSION: Patients undergoing gynecologic laparoscopic surgery who listened to their favorite music before the induction of anesthesia had less preoperative anxiety and recovered better 24 hours postoperatively than those who only received dexmedetomidine.PMID:38322568 | PMC:PMC10839387 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)

The research landscape of oxidative stress in osteoarthritis from 1998 to 2021: a systematic bibliometric analysis
CONCLUSION: The burgeoning body of literature pertaining to oxidative stress in OA has experienced a consistent growth over the past few decades, and this field will garner widespread attention and in-depth investigation. The frontier of chondrocyte senescence, as revealed by bibliometric analyses, represents a special focus of this field, with potential as a vital therapeutic target for OA.PMID:38322571 | PMC:PMC10839404 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)

Compressed sensing magnetic resonance imaging (CS-MRI) diagnosis of rotator cuff tears
CONCLUSION: CS-MRI provides high resolution for muscles, tendons, and soft tissues, significantly contributing to the diagnosis of soft tissue injuries. Although there were no significant differences in the sensitivity and specificity of CS-MRI for the clinical diagnosis of rotator cuff tears compared to the clinical signs, CS-MRI significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy.PMID:38322573 | PMC:PMC10839380 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)

ROS-induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction: a possible mechanism responsible for noise-induced ribbon synaptic damage
Am J Transl Res. 2024 Jan 15;16(1):272-284. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTEvidence suggests that damage to the ribbon synapses (RS) may be the main cause of auditory dysfunction in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathophysiology of synaptic damage. However, the relationship between oxidative stress and RS damage in NIHL remains unclear. To investigate the hypothesis that noise-induced oxidative stress is a key factor in synaptic damage within the inner ear, we conducted a study using mice subjected to single or repeated noise exposure (NE). We assessed auditory function using auditory br...
