Paraneoplastic Eczematous Dermatitis with Palmoplantar Keratoderma as an Initial Manifestation of Acute Myeloid Leukemia
A 74-year-old man with history of hypertension and chronic hepatitis C infection presented to the hospital with a two-week history of subjective fevers and unintentional weight loss of ten pounds. He also noted a one-year history of a worsening pruritic rash on his palms and soles that had been refractory to treatment. He denied a childhood history of atopy or allergies and had no prior history of eczematous dermatitis. (Source: The American Journal of Medicine)

Minimal clinically important differences in health-related quality of life after treatment with direct-acting antivirals for chronic hepatitis C: ANRS CO22 HEPATHER cohort (PROQOL-HCV)
ConclusionsThe overall MCID for the PROQOL-HCV scores ranged from 6.7 to 8.8 for improvement and from − 7.7 to − 4.6 for deterioration. The effect of DAA on PROQOL-HCV scores seemed particularly beneficial for patients with lower baseline scores. This subgroup could be motivated to take DAA if they are informed of the benefits for their HRQoL. (Source: Quality of Life Research)

Direct-Acting Antiviral Therapy for Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C Infection and Decompensated Cirrhosis
AbstractPatients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and decompensated cirrhosis are an important population for antiviral therapy yet under-represented in clinical trials. HCV direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies, unlike interferon-containing regimens, can be safely utilized in decompensated patients. Per guidelines from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), therapy of choice in HCV and decompensated cirrhosis is sofosbuvir, an HCV polymerase inhibitor, combined with a replication complex inhibitor (NS5A inhibitor) with or without ribavirin. Combination therapy with a HCV protease...

Med Chem. 2024 Apr 2. doi: 10.2174/0115734064277371240325105016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTViruses are acellular, microscopic, and mobile particles containing genetic particles, either DNA/RNA strands as nucleoproteins, responsible for 69,53,743 deaths till the year 2023. Curcumin and related compounds are among the areas of pivotal interest for researchers because of their versatile pharmacological profile. Chemically known as diferuloylmethane, which is a main constituent of turmeric along with demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin, they have a broad spectrum of antiviral activity against viruses such as human i...

Expanding access to healthcare for people who use drugs and sex workers: hepatitis C elimination implications from a qualitative study of healthcare experiences in British Columbia, Canada
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major health threat in Canada. In British Columbia (BC) province, 1.6% of the population had been exposed to HCV by 2012. Prevalence and incidence of HCV are very high in populatio... (Source: Harm Reduction Journal)

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 560: Mixed Infections Unravel Novel HCV Inter-Genotypic Recombinant Forms within the Conserved IRES Region
This study delves into the intriguing realm of HCV genetic diversity, specifically exploring the phenomenon of mixed infections and the subsequent detection of recombinant forms within the conserved internal ribosome entry site (IRES) region. Previous studies have identified recombination as a rare event in HCV. However, our findings challenge this notion by providing the first evidence of 1a/3a (and vice versa) inter-genotypic recombination within the conserved IRES region. Utilizing advanced sequencing methods, such as deep sequencing and molecular cloning, our study reveals mixed infections involving genotypes 1a and 3a...

High plasma interleukin-6 level, but not IL-6 gene variants, as a predictive marker for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma in a Moroccan population
In this study, we assessed IL-6 levels and explored the correlation between the rs1800795 and rs1800797 variants of the IL-6 gene and the risk of developing HCC. We conducted a case-control study involving 314 participants. Among them, 157 were HCC patients (94 anti-HCV, 22 HBsAg and 41 metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease [MASLD]) and 157 controls. Genotyping for IL-6 rs1800795 and rs1800797 polymorphisms was performed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Additionally, plasma IL-6 levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The IL-6 levels were notably higher in patients...
