Novel Strategies for Optimization of the Pre-transplant Donor Lung
AbstractPurpose of ReviewWhile the number of lung transplants continues to increase, there remains an imbalance between potential lung transplant candidates and acceptable donor lungs resulting in excess mortality. We sought to describe the current state of donor acceptance practices and highlight novel approaches that have the potential to result in an increase in acceptable lungs available for transplant.Recent FindingsIncreased utilization of lungs from donors with positive nucleic acid amplification tests for hepatitis C, donation after circulatory death, lungs conditioned for transplant at Centralized Lung Evaluation ...

Neurocognition and its predictors in a linguistically and culturally diverse cohort of people with HIV
Conclusions: Findings suggest worse neurocognition among English-speaking Latino PWH compared to Whites. Predictors of neurocognitive function among PWH differ across ethnic/racial and language groups. Consideration of these HIV disease characteristics and comorbidities may be valuable in developing targeted culturally-relevant interventions aimed at ameliorating neurocognitive dysfunction among diverse PWH.PMID:38588669 | DOI:10.1080/13854046.2024.2319900 (Source: The Clinical Neuropsychologist)

Patients undergoing liver resection for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease-related hepatocellular carcinoma and those for viral hepatitis-related hepatocellular carcinoma have similar survival outcomes
AbstractNumerous studies have compared outcomes of liver resection (LR) of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to those of patients with non-NAFLD-related HCC. However, results have been inconsistent. We aim to clarify this issue. We enrolled 801 patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC, 433 patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC, and 128 patients with NAFLD-related HCC undergoing LR. Overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of patients with different etiologies of chronic liver disease was compared using the Kaplan –Meier estimat...

Hospitalized cocaine detoxification patients in Paris, France: Increased patient levels and changing population characteristics since 2011
CONCLUSION: The referral to hospital care for cocaine detoxification has increased in Paris region since 2011, coupled with changes in inpatients' characteristics. This trend has significant implications for the management of inpatient hospital services.PMID:38582619 | DOI:10.1016/j.therap.2024.03.001 (Source: Therapie)

Trends in the prevalence of multiple chronic conditions among US adults with hypertension from 1999-2000 through 2017-2020
CONCLUSION: In 2017-2020, more than half of US adults with hypertension had ≥3 additional chronic conditions, a substantial increase from 20 years ago.PMID:38576398 | DOI:10.1093/ajh/hpae040 (Source: American Journal of Hypertension)

"The Prognostic Role of Aspartate Transaminase to Platelet Ratio Index (APRI) on Outcomes Following Non-emergent Minor Hepatectomy"
CONCLUSIONS: APRI ≥0.7 is associated with perioperative transfusion, overall morbidity, and 30-day mortality. APRI may serve as a noninvasive tool to risk stratify patients prior to elective minor hepatectomy.PMID:38579287 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241244645 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Lean body mass index is a marker of advanced tumor features in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma
CONCLUSION: Lean patients with cirrhosis and HCC present with larger tumors and are more often outside Milan criteria, reflecting cancer related cachexia from delayed diagnosis. Access to care for hepatitis C virus therapy and liver transplantation confer a survival benefit, but not overweight or obese BMI classifications.PMID:38577534 | PMC:PMC10989303 | DOI:10.4254/wjh.v16.i3.393 (Source: World Journal of Hepatology)

Hepatitis C prevalence and cascade of care among patients in the decentralised opioid agonist therapy programme of the canton of St Gallen, Switzerland: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: In the decentralised OAT setting of the canton of St Gallen, HCV Ab prevalence is high. Since HCV Ab and RNA screening uptake are markedly lower than in the centralised setting, potentially >40% of patients with chronic HCV are not diagnosed yet. HCV screening in the decentralised setting needs improvement, e.g. by increasing awareness and simplifying testing. High HCV treatment uptake and cure rates are possible in centralised and decentralised settings.PMID:38579293 | DOI:10.57187/s.3352 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)
