Cardiovascular Risk Associated With Social Determinants of Health at Individual and Area Levels
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cohort study, both individual- and area-level SDOH were associated with ASCVD risk; adding both individual- and area-level SDOH to the PCEs modestly improved discrimination and calibration for estimating ASCVD risk for Black individuals, and adding individual-level SDOH to PREVENT plus SDI also modestly improved calibration. These findings suggest that both individual- and area-level SDOH may be considered in future development of ASCVD risk assessment tools, particularly among Black individuals.PMID:38669015 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.8584 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Unravelling the role of cathepsins in cardiovascular diseases
Mol Biol Rep. 2024 Apr 26;51(1):579. doi: 10.1007/s11033-024-09518-1.ABSTRACTLysosomal cathepsins as a regulatory medium have been assessed as potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of various cardiac diseases such as abdominal aortic aneurysm, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, etc. They are ubiquitous lysosomal proteases with papain-like folded protein structures that are involved in a variety of physiological processes, such as the digestion of proteins, activation of pro-inflammatory molecules, degradation of extracellular matrix components, and maturation of peptide hormone...

A Novel Artificial Coronary Plaque to Model Coronary Heart Disease
CONCLUSION: This artificial atherosclerotic plaque model works as a simulating tool for future medical testing and could be crucial for further specified research on coronary artery disease and is going to help to provide information about the optimal interventional and surgical care of the disease.PMID:38667208 | PMC:PMC11048636 | DOI:10.3390/biomimetics9040197 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

The relationship between atherosclerosis and dementia
CONCLUSION: Cognitively impaired individuals, in particular those with vascular cognitive impairment, have poorer quality of life and shorter survival. Risk factors contributing to such impairment are similar to those for ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke. It may be concluded that most of the analysed risk factors play a role in the development of both atherosclerosis and dementia.PMID:38669152 | DOI:10.21101/cejph.a7848 (Source: Central European Journal of Public Health)

Gene expression profiling in elderly patients with familial hypercholesterolemia with and without coronary heart disease
CONCLUSIONS: Elderly event-free FH patients displayed a different PBMC gene expression profile compared to FH patients with CHD. Differences in gene expression compared to healthy controls were more pronounced in the CHD group, indicating a less atherogenic gene expression profile in event-free individuals. Overall, identification of cardioprotective factors could lead to future therapeutic targets.PMID:38663317 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2024.117507 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

The Role of Pyroptosis in Coronary Heart Disease
Anatol J Cardiol. 2024 Apr 25. doi: 10.14744/AnatolJCardiol.2024.4001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases, of which coronary heart disease (CHD) is a significant cardiovascular burden, are on the rise. Pyroptosis as an incipient programmed cell death mediated by inflammasomes can sense cytoplasmic contamination or interference and is typically marked by intracellular swelling, plasma membrane blistering and intense inflammatory cytokine release. As research on pyroptosis continues to progress, there is mounting evidence that pyroptosis is a vital participant in the pathophy...

Asthma and cardiovascular disease: embracing disease heterogeneity is required
Extract We read with interest the recent original research investigation by Valencia-Hernández et al. [1]. This observational study used two approaches to investigate the association of asthma and coronary heart disease (CHD): medical records and Mendelian randomisation (MR). Their results differ compared to many other prior studies investigating the association of asthma and CHD [2]. We applaud the authors for the thoroughness of the investigation; however, we have identified key methodological considerations in this study which may account for differences in the conclusions, compared to prior studies. The Use of Precision Epigenetic Methods for the Diagnosis and Care of Stable Coronary Heart Disease Reduces Healthcare Costs
ConclusionThese analyses support the use of precision epigenetic methods as part of the initial diagnosis and care of stable CHD and can meaningfully reduce cost. Real-world pilots to test the reliability of these analyses are indicated. (Source: Advances in Therapy)

Treatment patterns and adherence to lipid-lowering drugs during eight-year follow-up after a coronary heart disease event
CONCLUSIONS: In this long-term follow-up of patients with CHD, less than 70 % used high-intensity statin therapy with only small changes over time, and only 25 % used additional treatment with ezetimibe. We identified factors associated with reduced statin adherence that may be target for interventions.PMID:38657552 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2024.117550 (Source: Atherosclerosis)
