Study Examines Intermittent Fasting and Cardiovascular Mortality
Limiting time spent eating to an 8-hour window or less each day —a type of so-called intermittent fasting—was linked with a 91% increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease compared with eating throughout a 12- to 16-hour period, according to preliminary observational data presented at an American Heart Association conference. Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1477: Exploring the Language Used to Describe Older Patients at Multidisciplinary Cancer Conferences
bir M. H. Alibhai Older adults with cancer often present with distinct complexities that complicate their care, yet the language used to discuss their management at multidisciplinary cancer conferences (MCCs) remains poorly understood. A mixed methods study was conducted at a tertiary cancer centre in Toronto, Canada, where MCCs spanning five tumour sites were attended over six months. For presentations pertaining to a patient aged 75 or older, a standardized data collection form was used to record their demographic, cancer-related, and non-cancer-related information, as well as the presenter’s specialty ...

Breast Ultrasound Tumor Classification Using a Hybrid Multitask CNN-Transformer Network
In this study, we proposed a hybrid multitask deep neural network called Hybrid-MT-ESTAN, designed to perform BUS tumor classification and segmentation using a hybrid architecture composed of CNNs and Swin Transformer components. The proposed approach was compared to nine BUS classification methods and evaluated using seven quantitative metrics on a dataset of 3,320 BUS images. The results indicate that Hybrid-MT-ESTAN achieved the highest accuracy, sensitivity, and F1 score of 82.7%, 86.4%, and 86.0%, respectively.PMID:38601088 | PMC:PMC11006090 | DOI:10.1007/978-3-031-43901-8_33 (Source: MICCAI International Conference o...

Clinical status and perspective on the application of immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer: a review
Chin Clin Oncol. 2024 Apr 8:cco-23-92. doi: 10.21037/cco-23-92. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe therapeutic landscape of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been significantly improved by developing immunotherapy represented by programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). Furthermore, immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy is an essential treatment strategy for driver-negative advanced NSCLC, especially in a population with PD-L1 <50%, and leads to long-term survival in the entire population regardless of the PD-L1 expression status. Howeve...

Expert teleconsultation involving patients and their primary neurologists for the management of multiple sclerosis in regions without specialists
ConclusionsThe present study suggested that our expert teleconsultation system for MS reduces the burden on patients of visiting distant MS-specialized clinics, and enhances knowledge of MS management for the primary neurologists. It also promotes trust between patients and their primary neurologists, and taken together, these aspects could collectively lead to independent and sustainable MS management in regions without MS specialists. Wicked: The Musical
On Thursday, October 26, 2023, with a group of fellow AACAP annual conference goers, we saw the musical Wicked. Wicked is a beautiful and thought-provoking musical, telling the Wizard of Oz story from the perspective of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. In the musical, Elphaba starts out life at a disadvantage, as she is born with green skin. She is rejected from the beginning, with her father declaring “take it away!” (act 1, scene 1). The story picks up as she starts boarding school, largely to care for her younger sister, Nessa. (Source: Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)
