Preface: Special issue: 14th International Conference on Brain Energy Metabolism: Energy substrates and microbiome govern brain bioenergetics and cognitive function with aging
This special issue, entitled “Energetics and cognition in aging brain: Impact of substrates and microbiome”, contains manuscripts from attendees at the 14th International Conference on Brain Energy Metabolism (ICBEM) held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, October 24–27, 2022. Major topics include neuronal and mitochondrial en ergetics, higher brain functions involving astrocyte-neuron interactions, unique roles for glycogen, glycolytic upregulation during activation, determination of metabolite levels with genetically-encoded biosensors, dietary intervention in aging, gut-brain signaling, spreading depolarization and fun...

Significant improvement in paraneoplastic neurological syndromes without identifiable anti-neural antibodies in patients with breast cancer after breast surgery
We report a case in which neurological symptoms significantly improved after surgical treatment for breast cancer. The patient was a 78-years-old woman with subacute progressive cerebellar ataxia. A subsequent diagnosis of breast cancer led to the diagnosis of “PNS probable”. A comprehensive search for anti-neural antibodies was negative in all cases. The quantitative index of the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) score, a standard evaluation method for ataxia in spinocerebellar degeneration, improved after breast cancer surgery. Th is case may provide a rationale for treating breast cancer patients ...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 604: Brief Histories of Retroviral Integration Research and Associated International Conferences
man The field of retroviral integration research has a long history that started with the provirus hypothesis and subsequent discoveries of the retroviral reverse transcriptase and integrase enzymes. Because both enzymes are essential for retroviral replication, they became valued targets in the effort to discover effective compounds to inhibit HIV-1 replication. In 2007, the first integrase strand transfer inhibitor was licensed for clinical use, and subsequently approved second-generation integrase inhibitors are now commonly co-formulated with reverse transcriptase inhibitors to treat people living with HIV. Interna...

Issue Information
Front coverThis special issue related to the17th Symposium on Cholinergic Mechanisms (ISCM2022) highlights the progress in the molecular, neurochemical, pharmacological, toxicological, and clinical studies of the cholinergic system, underlining its complexity and impact on health and disease. The most recent ISCM2022 was organized in a hybrid format, allowing flexibility due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID pandemics.Image contentThe figure highlights the conference logo, with acetylcholine in Dubrovnik's common ornament carved in stone. Climate emergency and decent work
The climate crisis and loss of biodiversity, two closely related threats to human and planetary health, meet the criteria for the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare an international public health emergency, as occurred with COVID-19 (1), and urged by numerous scientific journals (2). Attaining decent work, understood as “opportunities for women and men to work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity” (3), in the context of the climate emergency, creates a paradox for worker health. Outdoor workers (notably those in agriculture and construction), many of them informal workers, are among th...

Heart failure, the global pandemic: A call to action consensus statement from the global presidential conclave at the platinum jubilee conference of cardiological society of India 2023
Indian Heart J. 2024 Apr 10:S0019-4832(24)00057-9. doi: 10.1016/j.ihj.2024.04.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHeart failure (HF) is emerging as a major public health problem both in high- and low - income countries. The mortality and morbidity due to HF is substantially higher in low-middle income countries (LMICs). Accessibility, availability and affordability issues affect the guideline directed therapy implementation in HF care in those countries. This call to action urges all those concerned to initiate preventive strategies as early as possible, so that we can reduce HF-related morbidity and mortality. The most imp...
