The Complementary Role of PET to Pathology in Differentiating the Primary Origin of a Malignant Skin Nodule from Liver or Lung
We present a case of malignant abdominal wall nodule initially diagnosed as metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma through excisional biopsy and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. Dual-tracer positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with 11C-acetate and 18F-FDG, however, showed metabolic findings in favor of metastasis from lung origin, which was finally confirmed by ensuing a lung biopsy with additional IHC stains. This case illustrates the complementary molecular role of PET to pathology, particularly when dual-tracer or multi-tracer PET is used in conjunction with pathology methods for cross referenc...

A case of refractory pelvic squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary that responded to nivolumab
J Obstet Gynaecol Res. 2023 Jan 5. doi: 10.1111/jog.15548. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCancer of unknown primary (CUP) is a heterogeneous group of metastatic tumors with a usually unfavorable prognosis. A 33-year-old female was diagnosed with pelvic squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary. The tumor was p16-positive, suggesting that it was human papillomavirus (HPV)-related. The tumor progressed for 4 months after concurrent chemoradiotherapy (initial treatment) and was refractory to paclitaxel plus carboplatin (second-line therapy). Liquid-based cancer genomic profiling identified five pathogenic variants, including ...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 353: Evaluation of Microsatellite Instability Molecular Analysis versus Immuno-Histochemical Interpretation in Malignant Neoplasms with Different Localizations
John Souglakos MMR gene germline mutations are considered a major genetic disorder in patients with hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC) or Lynch syndrome; A total of 15% of sporadic colon carcinomas are MSI-High. MSI has also been observed in other cancers, such as endometrial, gastric, and ovarian cancer. The aim of the current study was to correlate and outline the optimal method between the molecular testing of the instability of microsatellite DNA regions (MSI status) and the loss of protein expression by immunehistochemistry (MMR). A total of 242 paraffin-embedded tissues from gastrointestinal, gynecol...

Development and Clinical Implementation of an Automated Virtual Integrative Planner for Radiation Therapy of Head and Neck Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: AVI planner reliably generated clinically acceptable RT plans for oral cavity, salivary, oropharynx, larynx, and hypopharynx cancers. Physician-driven iterative learning processes resulted in favorable evolution in HN RT plan quality with significant time savings and improved consistency using AVI planner.PMID:36578278 | PMC:PMC9791598 | DOI:10.1016/j.adro.2022.101029 (Source: Ann Oncol)

Comparison of PD-L1 expression in squamous cell cancer of unknown primary and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma
ConclusionsImmunologic differences between SCCUP and OPSCC were detected. A higher PD-L1 expression in SCCUP could potentially facilitate further evaluation of checkpoint inhibitor therapy. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

The value of stereotactic biopsy of primary and recurrent brain metastases in the era of precision medicine
ConclusionIn patients with BM, frame-based stereotactic biopsy constitutes a safe procedure with a high diagnostic yield. Importantly, this extended to discerning pseudoprogression from tumor relapse after prior therapy. Thus, comprehensive molecular characterization based on minimal-invasive stereotactic biopsies lays the foundation for precision medicine approaches in the treatment of primary and recurrent BM. Post-traumatic multifocal abdominal splenosis. The role of the clinical history. Case report and review of literature
CONCLUSION: CT scan usually do not allow to make a certain diagnosis of splenosis, so the clinical history of splenic trauma or splenectomy, positive in all cases reported in literature, represent the key in the diagnostic pathway of splenosis. Management should be conservative as much as possible nonetheless in abdominal splenosis the surgical approach should be chosen for the symptomatic patients who present abdominal pain, occlusion or bleeding.KEY WORDS: Abdominal, Splenosis, Spleen, Surgery.PMID:36504183 (Source: Annali Italiani di Chirurgia)
